State govt approves BSc Nursing College at YCM Hospital with 60-seat capacity
The new 'Institute of Nursing Sciences' will operate from the third, fourth, and sixth floors of the newly constructed 11-storey building on the hospital campus, said officials.
The proposal to establish the BSc Nursing College was initiated in January 2022. Following this, administrative and elected body approvals were granted through the Standing Committee on March 10, 2022 and the General Body on April 6, 2022.
Subsequently, the state's Urban Development Department gave in-principle approval for staffing on June 24, 2024. An application for affiliation was submitted to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik, on November 5, 2024.
Based on the Competency Assessment Committee's recommendation, the state's medical education department issued a government resolution on July 16 and MUHS granted First Time Affiliation (FTA) on July 30 for the 2025-26 academic year, said Dr. Rajendra Wabale, dean, of Postgraduate Institute, YCM Hospital.
This college marks a significant addition to PCMC's medical education infrastructure. Since the inception of the Postgraduate Institute at YCM Hospital in 2018, over 240 postgraduate students have supported the hospital's critical operations — especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. With the launch of the nursing college, a new generation of trained nursing professionals will emerge to strengthen the city's public healthcare system, said Dr Wabale.
Admissions for the BSc Nursing course will be carried out by the Maharashtra State CET cell and Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Mumbai. 'The move not only addresses the rising demand for qualified nursing professionals but also ensures affordable and accessible nursing education for eligible candidates from the PCMC region,' Dr Wabale said.
'This initiative, spearheaded under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh and Additional Commissioner Vijay Khorate, is a strategic investment in both public health and women's empowerment. The Institute of Nursing Sciences will further enhance Pimpri Chinchwad's growing stature as a hub for quality medical education and services,' Dr Wable added.

Hospitals are using mosquito nets on beds, something not seen since the early COVID-19 days. How the virus spreads Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne virus. It spreads through the bite of an infected female mosquito—usually Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus. These mosquitoes also transmit dengue and Zika. They bite mostly during daylight and lay eggs in still water, like puddles, buckets, or plant pots. When a mosquito bites someone infected with chikungunya, it picks up the virus. Over the next few days, the virus multiplies inside the mosquito. Once it reaches the mosquito's saliva, it can pass on the virus to the next person it bites. That person can then pass it on to more mosquitoes, creating a cycle. Symptoms to watch for As per the World Health Organization, Symptoms usually appear 4–8 days after the bite (but can show up as early as 2 days or as late as 12). The illness often begins suddenly. Key signs include: High fever Intense joint pain (often severe and long-lasting) Swollen joints Muscle pain Headache Nausea Fatigue Rash Symptoms can be confused with other viruses like dengue and Zika. Without the telltale joint pain, mild cases may go unnoticed. Patients mostly recover fully from the infection; however, occasional cases of eye, heart, and neurological complications have been reported with CHIKV infections. Who is at risk? Those at highest risk for severe chikungunya infection include people at the extremes of age. Newborns are particularly vulnerable, especially if they are infected during delivery from a mother who has the virus, or if they are bitten by an infected mosquito within the first few weeks of life. Older adults, particularly those with underlying medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, or weak immunity, are also more likely to experience complications. How to protect yourself? If you are travelling to China or places nearby, it is advised to follow some precautions to protect yourself Apply EPA-registered insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus to exposed skin to prevent bites. Covering your skin reduces the chances of mosquitoes landing on and biting you. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so steer clear of places with puddles, open containers, or clogged drains. Aedes mosquitoes that spread chikungunya bite mostly during the day, so limit outdoor activity during daylight hours. Proper ventilation and screened windows keep mosquitoes out and help create a safe, bite-free environment indoors.

China Reports 7,000 Chikungunya Cases; Know Symptoms, Cause And Treatment
China is a facing a major chikungunya outbreak with over 7,000 cases of the mosquito-borne virus reported in the Guangdong province. The outbreak has prompted the authorities to trigger actions similar to the COVID-19 outbreak. Among the worst-affected regions in the country is the city of Foshan, where chikungunya patients have been ordered to stay in the hospital until they test negative. In a public notice issued on Sunday (Aug 3), the retail pharmacies have been ordered to start real-name registration and to keep records when selling medications to treat symptoms of chikungunya, including fever, rashes and joint pain. People who have travelled from chikungunya-affected cities in Guangdong have been told to self-monitor for symptoms, according to a report in South China Morning Post. Some hotels and restaurants that failed to promptly eliminate mosquito breeding sites have already been penalised by the authorities. At least 12 other cities apart from Foshan have also reported infections, with nearly 3,000 cases reported last week alone. Meanwhile, Hong Kong reported its first imported chikungunya fever case in six years on Saturday last week, raising the risk of local transmissions in the city. Authorities have been told to step up efforts to fight a potential outbreak. Data has shown that "breeding of the pest that can transmit chikungunya fever is 'fairly extensive' in 70 per cent of the city's surveyed areas". What is chikungunya? Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to humans primarily through the bite of infected mosquitoes, mainly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Humid weather during the rainy season creates ideal conditions for mosquito breeding. Despite being uncommon in China, Chikungunya epidemics are frequent in South and Southeast Asia as well as some regions of Africa. Symptoms of chikungunya: One of the major symptoms of chikungunya is intense joint pain and stiffness, affecting the hands, wrists, ankles and knees. This kind of joint discomfort is much more severe compared to typical viral infections and is a key distinguishing sign. Apart from joint pain, muscle pain, fatigue and overall weakness are also common in chikungunya. Many chikungunya patients develop a red, patchy rash on the torso, limbs, or face. Most people develop these symptoms within three to seven days of getting bitten. Chikungunya treatment There is no specific chikungunya treatment, but doctors focus on managing symptoms. Treatment for symptoms can include rest, fluids, and the use of analgesics and antipyretics. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can be used to help with acute fever and pain.

Covid cases rise in Aizawl, 10 patients test positive in 1 day
Aizawl: As many as 10 people tested Covid-19 positive in Aizawl in the last 24 hours, raising the total number of active cases in the state to 21, officials from the integrated disease aurveillance programme said on Tuesday. An upsurge in cases has been observed since Friday, when 5 out of 7 samples tested positive. On Saturday, all 9 samples returned positive results. No samples were tested on Sunday and Monday, officials added. The latest 10 cases, like the previous ones, are from Aizawl district, with most tests conducted at Zoram Medical College & Hospital in Falkawn near Aizawl. Since mid-May — when the first case of the year was detected — Mizoram has recorded 38 Covid-19 infections. Officials said 73 cases were reported in 2024, with no positive case recorded between Oct last year and mid-May this year. During the pandemic years (March 2020 to Oct 2024), Mizoram recorded 734 Covid-related deaths, with the highest toll of 538 in 2021. Eight deaths each occurred in 2020 and 2023, while 180 were reported in 2022. Since early 2020, a total of 19,97,882 samples have been tested in the state, of which 2,39,673 were confirmed positive. Of these, 2,38,918 patients have been discharged.
