Melt and Mingle cafe in Coimbatore specialises in chocolate-based desserts

The Hindu18-06-2025
Walking into Melt and Mingle feels a bit like stepping into Willy Wonka's world. If Wonka had traded his whimsical factory for a minimalist café, a space where tropical touches meet soft lighting, comfy seating, and mellow music, it would feel just like this. Nestled amid the hustle and bustle of Coimbatore, this cozy café started as a homegrown dessert bar.
Here, couverture chocolate forms the whole philosophy. Co-founder Sibi M, an IIM-A graduate, shares how his obsession with chocolates led him to realise his lifelong passion of building a chocolate legacy.
We start off with their Belgian Iced Chocolate, a velvety, bitter-sweet refresher on a hot day. The drink is packaged in a sleek, compact pop can. The OG skillet cookie is a must try. The cookie is made based on order and served in a piping-hot cast iron skillet topped with choco-chips. It is an ideal balance of soft and molten centre with crisp edges and goes well with a scoop of French vanilla ice cream, that adds a great contrast.
Melt and Mingle offers a well-curated menu for chocolate lovers in the city. 'We wanted to build a community for people who love chocolates,' says Sibi. The café carries commitment to couverture chocolates. Couverture is premium chocolate that contains a higher percentage of cocoa butter making it richer, glossier, and more expensive than compound chocolates used in commercial kitchens.
Then comes the drink that is the culinary equivalent of the feeling of being wrapped in a warm blanket on a rainy day. Their luxury hot chocolate, served in cute ceramic mugs, is a thick, creamy, steaming hot indulgence, perfect for comforting the soul after a long day.
Their Iced Mocha, Sibi mentions, is made from Arabica beans, freshly ground, and brewed in-house. The perfectly roasted coffee beans shine as the star of the drink, elevating it with a hint of nuttiness. The triple chocolate brownie, a mix of dark, white and milk chocolate, is a new Instagram sensation.
The café also offers a variety of savoury appetisers to choose from. The co-founder reveals plans for launching a gourmet breakfast menu shortly. Melt and Mingle currently has on offer a seasonal dessert menu called The Mango Soiree. The mango Dubai chocolate, mango tropical tres leches and the mango coconut cooler are a fusion of tropical sweetness and are perfect for beating the heat.

The best spots to get your egg coffee fix in Vietnam

Gift this article 'Egg coffee, eww!" That was my first thought when I heard about Hanoi's famous brew. As a coffee devotee (snob), I prefer my drink black and unsweetened. But I will try anything once, so on a Vietnam holiday a few years ago, I visited Hanoi's old quarter to sample the concoction. The frothy coffee arrived in a ceramic cup that sat in a bowl-like saucer with hot water (to keep the drink warm). I stirred the cup and gulped down the drink, which tasted like an airy, coffee-flavoured custard. 'Egg coffee, eww!" That was my first thought when I heard about Hanoi's famous brew. The frothy coffee arrived in a ceramic cup that sat in a bowl-like saucer with hot water (to keep the drink warm). I stirred the cup and gulped down the drink, which tasted like an airy, coffee-flavoured custard. French colonists brought coffee to Vietnam in the mid 19th-century. Today, the country is the world's second-largest Arabica coffee producer (after Brazil) and the largest producer of Robusta coffee. The Vietnamese introduced local variations of coffee, like coconut, yoghurt and even egg. The last was invented in 1946 by Nguyen Van Giảng, a bartender at the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi. Facing a milk shortage during the French War, the resourceful gent whisked eggs and condensed milk to make cappuccinos—and cà phê trứng (egg coffee) was born. On a recent trip to Hanoi, I attended an egg coffee workshop at JW Marriott Hanoi Hotel. The hotel barista Truong Vu first got me to brew a proper Vietnamese coffee using a phin, an apparatus that reminded me of the South Indian kaapi filter. He then brought out a cup with a single egg yolk, added a dash of honey (instead of condensed milk), and got to work with a hand blender. We transferred the resultant frothy mixture into a shallow ceramic coffee cup and poured over the coffee. The final flourish was dusting cocoa powder atop it. I wouldn't say I'm a convert, but I get the appeal of egg coffee. Also Read | Why Indian coffee hits different You can try the iconic drink at these cafes on your next visit to Vietnam. Café Giảng, Hanoi Considering how popular his invention became, it's no surprise that Mr. Giảng opened his own cafe in Hanoi's old quarter. Now run by his son, the coffeehouse is spread over a couple of floors, and is the go-to spot for egg coffee in the capital. Inside, the décor is unpretentious with low tables and stools, which are almost always fully occupied by both locals and tourists. Despite its fame, the café retains a charmingly local atmosphere, where the focus remains firmly on tradition and taste. The coffee, made as per the original recipe, is creamy and decadent—a must-try. Cafe Dinh, Hanoi Owned by Mr. Giảng's daughter, Cafe Dinh also carries forward the family legacy. Tucked away in a small alley by Hoan Kiem Lake, this unassuming spot can be easy to miss; look for the sign 'Shop 13 Cafe Dinh' above a small alleyway and follow it to the second-floor cafe. The cosy balcony offers a lake view and a quiet perch above the bustling streets below. Along with the egg coffee, you can enjoy live music here. Cafe Pho Co, Hanoi Finding Cafe Pho Co is also a bit of an adventure as its entrance is hidden behind a silk shop (named Silklike). Climb through narrow passageways to reach its rooftop terrace, where you can savour their creamy brew while taking in sweeping views of Hoan Kiem Lake. The laidback vibe and scenic setting make it a perfect spot to linger over your cuppa. Góc Hà Nội, Ho Chi Minh City A tiny, three-level alley cafe in the heart of District 1's Bui Vien Street (the city's backpacker quarter), Góc Hà Nội has just six tables. The intimate setting makes it feel like you're visiting a friend's home rather than a café. In a retro ambience surrounded by Vietnamese memorabilia, sip on their creamy egg coffee along with a couple of sugar cookies. Made with leftover egg whites, these are free to sample from a glass jar on the third floor (leave a little tip, though). OKKIO, Ho Chi Minh City A few steps from Ben Thanh Market on Le Loi Street, take a spiral staircase up to the third floor and enter OKKIO via a tiny red door. Here, the weathered brick walls and blue tiles blend vintage charm with modern minimalism, offering a stylish retreat from the city's frenzy. Enjoy their indulgent egg coffee with a rich marshmallow-like foam, topped with a sprinkling of cocoa. Also Read | Hoi An beyond the 'banh mi' Prachi Joshi is a Mumbai-based travel and food writer. The Substance was like entering the eye of the storm: Margaret Qualley

Agency: Last Updated: Los Angeles, Aug 5 (PTI) 'The Substance" actor Margaret Qualley says her role in the body horror drama film made her confront 'generations of trauma". Qualley, who is the daughter of actor Andie MacDowell and former model Paul Qualley, starred alongside Demi Moore in the film. Directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, the 2024 film revolves around Elisabeth Sparkle (Moore), a fitness icon who is laid off from her TV show when she turns 50. A desperate Sparkle turns to the Substance, a black market product that helps her spawn a younger version, called Sue, portrayed by Qualley. But they must alternate their existence in the world. Qualley said boarding the film was like 'entering the eye of the storm" for her. 'It was like entering the eye of the storm. It was like dealing with all of my s**t, my mom's s**t, generations of trauma. It was a nightmare, being this idyllic, youthful fembot. No one thinks of themselves like that. The movie is not a good touchstone for what femininity is — it is quite masculine in a lot of ways," she told Cosmopolitan in an interview. The actor praised her co-star, Moore, and called her a special person. 'The thing I'll take home with me, for sure, is Demi Moore. She's such a special person. She's strong and she's wise, but she's also incredibly soft and porous. I learned so much from her. She's become one of my dearest friends," Qualley said. 'The Substance" had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, where it won the award for the best screenplay and received an 11-minute standing ovation. Qualley is currently gearing up for the release of her upcoming film 'Honey Don't!". The comedy film is directed by Ethan Coen and is slated to hit the big screen on August 22.
