‘Game of Thrones' Actor Iain Glen on Tackling Philippine History in New Film ‘Quezon': It ‘Makes You Appreciate the Era That You're in'

'Game of Thrones' veteran Iain Glen's latest role is portraying Major General Leonard Wood in 'Quezon,' the upcoming historical drama from acclaimed Filipino director Jerrold Tarog.
In an interview with Variety from the film's set in the Philippines, Glen discussed his preparation for inhabiting the role of Wood, who served as governor-general of the Philippines from 1921-1927 and was instrumental in Manuel L. Quezon's quest for Philippine independence from the United States. The film is a biopic that chronicles the life of Filipino lawyer and soldier Quezon, who served as president of the Commonwealth of the Philippines from 1935 to 1944.

'Quezon' stars Jericho Rosales in the title role of Quezon and the cast also includes Mon Confiado, Benjamin Alves, Karylle Yuzon, Romnick Sarmenta, J.C. Santos and Cris Villanueva.
'I was sent the script and, hold my hands up, I didn't know a great deal about Philippine history and I didn't know much about Major General Leonard Wood either,' Glen says. 'I read the script as a script, realizing that it was a kind of historical depiction of that period, and was just very taken by the words, taken by the role.'
The film is part of Tarog's historical trilogy, following his previous acclaimed works 'Goyo: The Boy General' and 'Heneral Luna.' Glen reveals that watching these earlier films served as 'a crash course in Philippine history' that helped him get ready for his role.
'The production sent me research material, writings of Wood from that period, other writings about that period, as the Philippines reached for their independence,' Glen says. He also studied archive footage and voice recordings of Wood himself, which he found 'very useful' in bringing him 'very close' to the historical figure.
Glen praises Tarog's meticulous approach to the material. 'Our director is incredibly thorough in everything that he does, and he's very, very well researched, and he imbues the script with all that material, so it's kind of there for you,' he says.
Discussing the process of portraying a real historical figure, Glen explains his process: 'Once you've done your research, once you prepare, once you feel you've found the voice for him… then you kind of have to not let go of that, but hope that sits with you, and then just play the scene for what it is.'
Glen highlights the film's potential impact, saying that it 'makes you appreciate the era that you're in, because you look at the battles that were fought to allow you to live in, in this case, the democracy that is currently being enjoyed in the Philippines.'
The actor was impressed by the production value of 'Quezon,' praising 'the period, the art direction, the costumes, the sets that we're shooting in.'
'It really takes you on a wonderful journey,' he adds.
Working with Tarog and a predominantly Filipino cast has been a unique experience for Glen, who describes the director as 'an auteur' with 'an extensive encyclopedic knowledge of the territory.' He likens Tarog's directing style to composing music, noting that 'everything is orchestrated' with a clear vision of 'where the highs and lows are, where the quiet moments, where the emotional thrust must come.'
Glen also praises his Filipino co-stars, calling them 'consummately good performers, very talented, very suited to the roles' and says he appreciates the 'playfulness on set,' adding, 'There's laughter, there's fun. And that I really enjoyed.'

I Didn't Have Jonathan Bailey Comparing Wicked To ‘Independence Day' On My Bingo Card, But I Honestly Think It Sounds Intense

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. If you like Bridgerton alum Jonathan Bailey, the 2025 movie schedule is a boon for the senses. Not only will he be showing up in the summer blockbuster Jurassic World Rebirth, but he'll of course be returning to the role of the dreamy Fiyero - as we saw in Wicked: For Good's first trailer. Filming Jon M. Chu's adaptation of the Broadway legend was always going to be quite the experience; but I never thought the man would compare it to Roland Emmerich's Independence Day - though it makes total sense. Feel free to agree or disagree, courtesy of Mr. Bailey offering these recollections in a GQ profile: Being slightly off the M1 in Munchkinland, with Ari [that's Ariana Grande to you and I] singing a beautiful mezzo soprano, and then seeing cars pulling up on the hard shoulder trying to record it. And then seeing men in the sky, [which] turned out to be microlights and drones. It was like Independence Day. Ok, so it's not the residents of Munchkinland running from an exploding Empire State Building; but the comparison still stands. Imagining Wicked's award-nominated artistry being staged in a field in England, with all the bells and whistles, must have been exhilarating. Though that big about the drones and microlights may be the kicker, as the right time of day could make those look like something not of this Earth. It certainly sounds akin to watching Independence Day in the '90s, and being blown away by something like Bill Pullman's stirring, title-dependent speech. Only Jonathan Bailey was much closer to the action than a Peacock subscription would get you, and he technically got to watch a free Ariana Grande performance. Either way, there's a potential for fun Jeff Goldblum stories to crop up. Peacock TV: from $7.99 a month/$79.99 a yearIf you can't wait until November to rejoicify in the release of Wicked: For Good, a Peacock subscription could have you flying high until then! With access to Wicked, as well as some documentaries and November's upcoming live event, it'd be very hard to bring you down! And all it costs is as little as $7.99 a month, with the option to upgrade to premium ad-free Deal The reaction to the first half of Universal's two-part musical epic certainly made a similar impression to the debut of that 1996 sci-fi disaster epic. With Wicked banking various box office milestones, and even inspiring audiences to sing along (much to the chagrin of some parties), it was a movie truly of the moment. Wicked: For Good isn't due out until November 21st, but don't forget that you can stream Wicked on Peacock. As for Jonathan Bailey, he'll be next seen in Jurassic World Rebirth, which hits theaters on July 2nd - much sooner than what we know about Bridgerton Season 4, which will see him return to Netflix at some point in 2026.

The Weeknd Might Not Be Retiring His Music Persona After All

The Weeknd has teased that Hurry Up Tomorrow— his sixth album and upcoming film of the same name— also marks the end of the artist fans have grown to love for over 15 years. However, that may not necessarily be the case. While promoting the film at CinemaCon 2025, Abel Tesfaye told EW that this moment feels like both a death and resurrection. 'It feels like it [the end of the Weeknd]. I mean, I've kind of toyed with the idea in the past with albums,' he noted. 'But it could also just be a rebirth. Who knows?' Back in January, the 35-year-old announced plans to retire his alter ego. 'It's a headspace I've gotta get into that I just don't have any more desire for,' he explained to Variety. 'You have a persona, but then you have the competition of it all. It becomes this rat race: more accolades, more success, more shows, more albums, more awards and more No. 1s. It never ends until you end it.' Hurry Up Tomorrow marks the conclusion in the trilogy that began with 2020's After Hours, which was followed by 2022's Dawn FM. The film follows a fictionalized version of himself, also named Abel, who gets taken on an insane ride by a seductive stranger, Anima (Jenna Ortega). Director Trey Edward Shults, shared with EW in February that he 'tried to make the movie in a way where, for his fans and people who want to approach it at that level, I hope it's very satisfying and you get a good meal out of it.' Shults confirmed that it was an 'absolute possibility' that the movie would be The Weeknd's last hurrah chapter, adding 'For people that aren't his fans and don't know anything about him or even care about the final capping of the Weeknd, I think you still have a great movie to go through.' The Weeknd considers the film to be 'really introspective and cathartic.' It hits theaters this Friday.
