Horse racing tips: ‘He can fly home with a big weight allowance' – Templegate's 6-1 NAP and one ‘at a huge price'

The Irish Sun30-05-2025
TEMPLEGATE tackles Saturday's action confident of building the bank for Epsom next week.
Back a horse by clicking their odds below.
LOOM (York 2.40, nap)
Richard Fahey's three-year-old gets a hefty weight allowance from his older rivals and he's already shown enough to win this. After a promising comeback fifth at Newmarket last month, he found a lot more when second here in a big field last time. He might have won had he been a bit closer to the pace before flying home. This is his sixth start so he's still learning and there's more to come.
ESTRANGE (2.58 Haydock, nb)
This filly to follow finished last season with a smooth Listed success at Doncaster over 1m2f. She is from the family of St Leger winner Logician so will relish this stiffer test of stamina. She can improve for David O'Meara on just her fourth racecourse outing.
WITCH HUNTER (2.10 Chester, treble)
Looks a massive price after a good effort at Ascot last time. He has copped a handy draw in stall two and has had a nudge down the weights. He'll be right there for Richard Hannon.

LOOM ran a cracker here two weeks ago when second in a big field handicap.
That was just his second run of the campaign and he should take another step forward for it.
His draw in stall three should be ideal and he's best over this trip.
JM Jungle has a strong record at York and was second here earlier this month in good company.
The Quinn yard is in decent form and he'll be right there again.
Duran got the job done nicely at Haydock over this trip last time and a 4lb rise keeps him right in the hunt.
Kodiac Thriller got the job done nicely when scooting in over this distance at Thirsk 14 days ago.
An 8lb rise in and hike in grade gives him more to do but he's capable of better.
Bond Chairman could be a big price on debut for a new yard.
He's been out of sorts for a while so has tumbled to 11lb below his last winning mark and this distance is ideal.
3.15
TERM OF ENDEARMENT stormed home to win this last year and can repeat the feat having left Henry De Bromhead for William Haggas.
Her return in Dubai was always going to be a warm-up, especially over a trip that stretches her a little.
She'll love getting back over 1m6f at an ideal track on ground that suits.
Scenic shaped with promise on return at Goodwood last time and looks the main danger.
All her best form has come over 1m4f so far but she was staying on strongly last time and should see this out in decent conditions.
Sueno was behind her last time having just her third start.
She was coming back from a long break so could easily close the gap especially with Ryan Moore in the saddle.
Divina Grace was a well-beaten third in a Newmarket Group 2 latest and needs to prove her stamina for this longer distance.
HAYDOCK
1.48
FINE INTERVIEW has a run under his belt thanks to a neck third in a big field at Donny in March.
He finished last season with an impressive distance win on Town Moor and has more to come.
He will enjoy a little bit of juice in the ground and William Buick can steer him home.
Durham Castle will go very close if fit for this comeback run.
He scored on the sand at Southwell before winning easily on handicap debut at Goodwood in September.
He's up 9lb for that smooth success over this trip but he looks capable of improving past that with the Crisford training ream in decent form.
Tinto finished strongly when beaten on the nod over 5f at Thirsk earlier this month.
He shapes as though going back up in trip will help.
Oisin Murphy getting back on board is a plus for King's Lynn who is on the downgrade but still has enough quality to figure.
Kodi Lion has been second in good company at Ascot and Donny heading here and likes this trip. He could still be improving.
Evergreen Dakota Gold scored at Ripon last time and likes it here. He has place claims up 3lb.
2.23
SHAGRAAN could be overpriced given how well he's been running in hot handicaps.
He was in a blanket finish at Doncaster before running another cracker in a big field at York 16 days ago.
He has winning form over course and distance and doesn't mind dead ground.
Jasour is interesting coming back from a long break. He was third in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at last year's Royal Ascot so has class.
This is his easiest race for a long time on paper and he's gone well fresh before.
No Half Measures looked rusty on comeback at Newmarket earlier this month.
He has some smart form over this trip and should build on that return effort.
Leovanni was a classy two-year-old and won the Group 2 Queen Mary which is top form.
She doesn't want more rain as her Cheveley Park effort on soft ground was her worst of the season.
Rage Of Bamby will be sharper for her comeback struggle at York last time but her best efforts have come over further.
Seven Questions also needed his comeback at HQ and has run well here before.
2.58
ESTRANGE finished last season with an impressive Listed win over 1m2f at Doncaster on soft ground.
She gives the stronger impression that this step up in trip will bring more improvement and there should be a little bit of juice in the ground which she likes.
Shaha took a big step up when moving up to this distance at Goodwood on comeback earlier this month.
She had plenty left in the tank crossing the line and her fitness is assured.
Beautiful Love has her sights lowered slightly after a well-beaten second at York last time.
She isn't screaming out for this longer trip but should see it out.
She needs a little step up to get her head back in front.
The rest need to improve a bundle with Chorus looking the pick despite being no match for Shaha last time out.
She is proven over this distance and may improve for that run.
3.33
ALYANAABI looked a different horse on his first run since being gelded here last time.
He stormed home over course and distance and looks the type to improve as a four-year-old.
Kinross looks the big danger on comeback. He won this way back in 2021 and wasn't disgraced in Group 1s last season.
He may not be the force he was but he still has enough to figure.
Audience landed Group 2 honours at Glorious Goodwood last year before not enjoying himself dropped to 6f.
He is back over his ideal trip here and had a run in Dubai last month so should be fit. His best form would take him close.
Spycatcher landed a cosy win at Doncaster on comeback in March and has held his own at this level before.

Horse racing tips: ‘He's a stayer who won't be stopping' – Templegate's big 11-2 NAP on the final day of Goodwood

TEMPLEGATE is in red-hot form and he tackles Saturday's action from Glorious Goodwood confident of smashing the bookies once more. Back a horse by clicking their odds below. SAM HAWKENS (1.55 Goodwood, nap) He is a stayer on the up as he showed when scooting in over 1m5f at Hamilton last time. There was a bit of juice in the ground at the Scottish track and he wasn't stopping at the line. This is a hotter race but there's more to come. SAYIDAH HARD SPUN (2.10 Newmarket, nb) She has won two of her past three runs and saw out this trip well when scoring at Ascot last time. The handicapper has been fair with a 3lb rise in the weights and she can take another step forward. TERM OF ENDEARMENT (2.30 Goodwood, treble) She won this race 12 months ago and returning to this trip and track can bring out her best form. She was beaten when odds-on at Sandown last time but that was a muddling race and he was only two lengths away at the line. We know she stays and a little give in the ground is fine while William Haggas is in fine form. Templegate's TV verdicts GOODWOOD Most read in Horse Racing 1.20 ARABIAN CROWN was a solid third in a Newmarket Group 2 last time and the form has been franked here this week. He goes on any ground and sees out this trip. There's more to come from this four-year-old. Al Aasy won this last year and, while he's not the greatest battler, his class will see him close again. Candleford is seven now but looked as good as ever when taking a Beverley Listed prize last month. He likes this trip and William Haggas is in decent form. Meydaan was second on his last visit here in May and has been running well at Listed level without winning. Ryan Moore taking over is a plus but he needs a bit more to score. Ambiente Friendly hasn't fired this season and has been gelded since a poor effort at Royal Ascot. 1.55 SAM HAWKENS is a stayer on the up as he showed when scooting in over 1m5f at Hamilton last time. There was a bit of juice in the ground at the Scottish track and he wasn't stopping at the line. This is a hotter race but there's more to come. Aeronautic was a good fifth in the Copper Horse handicap at Royal Ascot over this distance and is open to improvement for Joseph O'Brien. He's off the same mark and may prefer this slightly slower ground. Stressfree would have a massive chance if seeing out this longer trip. He has been going well around 1m4f and looks a big price to place. French Duke is another stepping up in distance and he won at this meeting last season. Roger Varian's hope is 10lb higher than that now but should have more to offer. Master Builder often travels well without winning but he has scored over this trip and didn't run badly on his last run here. 2.30 TERM OF ENDEARMENT won this race 12 months ago and returning to this trip and track can bring out her best form. She was beaten when odds-on at Sandown last time but that was a muddling race and he was only two lengths away at the line. We know she stays and a little give in the ground is fine while William Haggas is in fine form. Danielle is interesting on this hike in distance having shown Group quality over shorter. This may not be the day after a long break she's one to watch. Fellow Gosden runner Sueno was a solid second at Newmarket latest and ran well over this distance at York before that. She is another with solid claims. Goodie Two Shoes won a Group 3 over this distance at Fairyhouse latest and is respected with William Buick up. Waardah is a three-year-old with a bright future after a Listed win here in June. That was over 1m2f so she has to prove her staying power. 3.05 I'M in the PUROSANGUE gang in the £250,000 Stewards' Cup. Top jockey William Buick teams up with Andrew Balding with this four-year-old who saves his best for this distance and likes soft ground. He should get his conditions here and run a big race at fair odds. Last year's winner Get It took the Wokingham last time and will go close again, while Completely Random also went well at Royal Ascot. Elmonjed is another one high on the shortlist. Here's my guide to the big field, where I rate them 1 (worst) to 5 (best): ALZAHIR 3 HIR we go. Went off far too quick at York last time after three good wins. Goes on any ground and may bounce back at too big a price. ANNAF 3 AF a go. Big player at best but unreliable and slow away too often. Talented if getting a clean break but has a big weight. APOLLO ONE 3 ONE show. Twice second in this and always runs his race but probably needs a personal best to finally win it. CIRCE 4 YES Cir. Strong traveller with three wins this summer. Up in class but big field suits and Moore up. Handles soft. COMMANCHE FALLS 2 COM on. Dual winner of this race in his proime. Stable back in nick but latest form underwhelming. Hard to rule out, but needs best to hit the frame. COMPLETELY RANDOM 4 RAN raid. Good run in the Wokingham latest and will love the pace of this. Just the type to pop up in a race like this. DESERT COP 1 COP out. Decent form in Bahrain but has been poor back here. Looks the yard's second string. DRAMA 2 NO Drama. Plenty of form on AW but turf record is weaker. Unlucky last time but needs more for this. ELMONJED 4 EL of a bet. Improved a bundle to win at York and likes this trip and going. More weight but a major player. GERMANIC 2 TOO Manic. Two quiet on turf efforts since a big run over this at Newcastle. Trip fine but needs a lot more. GET IT 4 IT makes sense. Won this at 40s last year and took the Wokingham last time in style. Only 4lb higher and set for bold bid from from front. No shock to see him go very close. HAMMER THE HAMMER 3 HAMMER time. Good second at Royal Ascot over 5f and likes this trip. Not tackled slow ground before but it's early days and there's more to come. JAKAJARO 3 ALRIGHT Jak. Unlucky at Ascot and ran well here Tuesday. First try at 6f but looks well treated. Off the same mark and not discounted. JORDAN ELECTRICS 1 JOR drop. Getting on a bit now and poor comeback latest. Hard to fancy despite trainer Jim Goldie being in good form. JUNGLE DRUMS 1 JUNGLE juiced. Fair 2yo but been poor for a while and this looks much too tough. Drums out of tune. KORKER 3 KOR blimey. Hold-up horse who needs luck but trip fine and likes soft. Each-way shout if getting the breaks. ORAZIO 1 ON Raz. Hit and miss last year and poor comeback at Ascot. Hard to fancy despite handling any ground. PUROSANGUE 5 URO Star. Backed for this last year on firm but best efforts on soft and dropped to a very nice mark. Can go close. RUN BOY RUN 3 ON Run. Has been reliable in top 6f races and didn't stay 7f last twice. Back to best trip and could sneak a place. SAINT LAWRENCE 1 LAW broken. Not won since the 2023 Wokingham and poor in that race this year. Tall order in current form. SEVEN QUESTIONS 1 SEVEN down. Group 3 winner last term over 5f and best at that trip. Shown little form this season. STRIKE RED 3 RED alert. Best of group behind Elmonjed at York. Nicely treated and peaking at right time. Can run a good race. THE X O 1 CROSS out X. Out of sorts for a while and tailed off on stable debut. Trip suits but not good enough for this. TOCA MADERA 2 MAD bet. Good third at York in May and holding his form but doesn't look well treated in first-time cheekpieces. TWILIGHT CALLS 1 TWILIGHT in dark. Three years without a win tells the tale. Best over this trip but likely to struggle again. TWILIGHT JET 2 JET must fly. Ran well at Epsom but was poor here on Tuesday. Prefers this trip on soft but needs a lot more. TWO TRIBES 3 TWO true. Won strong 7f race last week at Ascot and stamina may help in conditions. Could get involved late. VADREAM 2 BAD Vad. Was tailed off at Royal Ascot and on a long losing run. Slow ground suits but up against it again. 3.45 SPIRIT OF FARHH looks a big price given how well he took a Newmarket handicap over this trip 14 days ago. The ground was tacky on the July course but he went through it nicely and is open to improvement. In-form trainer Eve Johnson Houghton has a good record here and can go close again. Montpellier won a couple of maidens and ran well at Salisbury on handicap debut last time. There's more to come with this step up in distance a wise move. Consolidation was snookered by the draw at Royal Ascot but won over this course and distance two starts ago. It's early days and there should be a lot more to come. Mudbir is bred to be classy and scored on handicap debut at Sandown 28 days ago. He should progress from there from the Gosdens and looks a big player. Rare Change was hampered at Newcastle last time after winning at Pontefract. He likes this trip and has place claims. Yah Mo Be There ran well in the Jersey Stakes from a moderate draw and is another danger. NEWMARKET 2.10 SAYIDAH HARD SPUN has won two of her past three runs and saw out this trip well when scoring at Ascot last time. The handicapper has been fair with a 3lb rise in the weights and she can take another step forward. Awaafi was a promising second at Haydock last time. She shapes as though seven furlongs would be ideal but her stamina could be an asset here. Azleet enjoyed the all-weather when scoring over this distance at Southwell 20 three weeks ago. Her opening handicap mark of 76 looks on the lenient side and there should be more to come. Ruby's Angel is another making her handicap debut and was a place behind Awaafi last time. Despite that she carries 1lb more which seems a little strange but she's not out of this. Meelaf completes the field for in-form Karl Burke and has run well at Group 3 level so is no mug in this wide-open contest. Her mark is not the kindest and she might have less scope than a few of these now but she's quick. 3.20 MERIBELLA had some traffic problems in a Pontefract Listed race last time so did well to finish third. This trip is ideal and she will be on the premises again. Jane Temple clocked a personal best when third in a similar contest to this last time. She goes on any ground and will be right there. Silent Love steps out of maiden company where she landed a battling success at Kempton latest. This longer trip will suit and there's a fair bit more to come. Sioux Life is an Italian Group 2 winner over 1m2f so has quality but her first crack at this trip at Haydock last time was only a modest run. Karmology was second in good company at Beverley and will try to nick this off the front. She's likely to be collared by a couple in the closing stages. My headline 11-2 tip can pull off a famous Glorious Goodwood double in the big sprint on Friday

FIRST came Evs and now there's Mojo as trainer Mick Appleby tries to make it 'Big' in the feature sprint on day four of Glorious Goodwood. Twelve months ago it was Big Evs who took the King George Qatar Stakes for Appleby and Tom Marquand. Advertisement 1 Big Mojo could prove unstoppable in what is sure to be a rapid King George sprint at Goodwood Credit: Alamy On Friday afternoon, live on ITV, the pair are at it again with BIG MOJO and have every chance of pulling off a famous double. This season the crack juvenile has been second in the July Cup and seventh in the Commonwealth Cup. Both of those are over 6f, and I suspect he will love dropping back to 5f. Has a big mojo of a chance. Opposition is headed by last year's runner-up Asfoora who challenges from Australia as well as Khaadem, who blew away cobwebs at Newbury the other day. Advertisement He won this in 2022 from Appleby's Raasel! The action starts with a unique handicap over an extended 2m4f. One-time St Leger hope ALIGN THE STARS might cause a ripple for Charlie Johnston and Christophe Soumillon. A seventh in the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot wasn't a bad performance suggesting this trip is not totally out of his compass and his fifth at Newmarket last time wasn't too bad. Advertisement Most read in Horse Racing He's down another pound now and I'm not sure this is the strongest renewal of all time. An each-way chance. The Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes is for three-year-olds over 1m and Opera Ballo was my pick here but I'll go for DIEGO VENTURA now given form on what is sure to be sodden ground. Another handicap in the Golden Mile over, you've guessed it, 1m. BOPEDRO was fifth in this last year off 96 and hasn't won a race since yet goes in now off 98. Advertisement All in all he's a badly handicapped horse especially at the age of nine. That all said, Hector Crouch can have fun with this ride as there is no pressure from a horrible draw in stall 16. The old boy will be dropped out and ridden cold and try and fly home late. I'll chance a few quid each-way. Trainer David O'Meara is great in these races and ground conditions are not issue. Advertisement Finally on ITV a conditions race over 1m1f. LIBERTY LANE has to give some weight away but will probably take all the beating for Clifford Lee and Karl Burke. My hope flopped at Royal Ascot in the Wolferton over a bit further, but he scored well at this track the time before and this level should be well within his reach. When he's on a going day he's quite a decent horse. Advertisement Good luck! William Haggas has smuggled a Group horse into a handicap and I suspect he will take all the beating at Goodwood

TACTICS can be everything in sport. But when you rely on tactics they can, of course, always go wrong. That was very much the case for Ballydoyle in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot last weekend. 1 Ryan Moore and Aidan O'Brien made a rare mistake and got it wrong in the King George - but they can rebound in style in the Nassau with Whirl Credit: Sportsfile Jan Brueghel and Continuous had a nightmare. But on Thursday at Glorious Goodwood surely it's simple what Ryan Moore should do in the feature Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes, live on ITV. Runner-up in the Oaks, and a horse that might have won that race on another day, WHIRL then made all to defeat King George runner-up Kalpana in the Group 1 Pretty Polly at the Curragh. This afternoon on paper the only pace pressure is Running Lion, and even if she decides to go on Whirl can sit second and is a much better horse getting 9lb! It all looks simple to me, even though the opposition includes the useful See the Fire (third in the Prince of Wales's to Ombudsman) and Coronation Stakes-winning roughie Cercene. Hopefully Whirl makes all the running, or nearly all! Day three of Glorious Goodwood on telly starts with a handicap for three-year-olds over 1m2f. William Haggas looks to have a live one here in HIGH DEGREE and I suspect he will take all the beating. Most read in Horse Racing Of course the big negative is the draw - there is not a single rider who would want stall 18. But Tom Marquand is class and I just hope he conjures up a passage for the son of Too Darn Hot who lost his maiden tag at Ffos Las last time in a tight finish. I suspect this could be a Group horse in a handicap. Up in class for the Group 2 Richmond Stakes over 6f next. AZIZAM was drawn miles away from winner and reposing Havana Hurricane in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot and he looked like the animal gagging for this extra furlong when finishing strongly in third. My hope has been off the track since then and lacks a bit of match practise but the odds are decent and he really should have strong eachway claims for Karl Burke and Sam James. The Group 3 Gordon Stakes is for three-year-olds over 1m4f. MERCHANT will be a banker for many after his Royal Ascot romp in the King George V Stakes. Haggas will be thinking he's got a right St Leger hope on his hands and I so no reason why he can't be another for Marquand. Remember he was drawn in stall 20 at Ascot and still won. The trainer won this with Desert Hero before he finished third in the Leger. Finally, a handicap for more three-year-olds over 5f. RUBY'S PROFIT has been dropped 1lb for a couple of defeats even though she ran crackers at both Epsom and Royal Ascot. Prior to those two efforts the Jamie Insole runner had scored well at this course and the draw is great in stall eight. Hopefully out, away and gone and very hard to kick out the frame at the very least. Come on Kieran Shoemark. Good luck!
