Five Miami Hurricanes players who improved their standing during spring practices

Miami Herald14-04-2025
The Miami Hurricanes' 15-practice spring regiment concluded Saturday with the team's spring game, and coach Mario Cristobal toed the line between praising his group and understanding more work needs to be done as the team prepares for the season ahead.
'A lot of ground was made,' Cristobal said after the scrimmage. 'I will never come up here and try to fluff up the spring. We have a ways to go, but we have progressed so much. We are excited. We feel like every spring we are getting better and I feel the same way about this spring.'
The team will reconvene in late July to resume preparation for the 2025 season, which begins Aug. 31 against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Miami is coming off a 10-3 season in which it started 9-0 and then faltered down the stretch, losing out on chances to play in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Game and the 12-team College Football Playoff in the process.
In the meantime, here are five players who took a step forward this spring.
Offensive lineman Markel Bell
Bell has the size at 6-9 to be a menacing force at left tackle. He got valuable reps last season as well when starter Jalen Rivers missed five games and then continued getting spot playing time when Rivers did return.
Now, Bell looks poised to take over full-time at left tackle for a starting offensive line that should also include left guard Ryan Rodriguez, center James Brockermeyer, right guard Anez Cooper and right tackle Francis Mauigoa.
The offensive line will need to be a strength for the Hurricanes in 2025.
Defensive back Xavier Lucas
Of the handful of defensive backs who transferred to Miami this winter, Lucas has been the most consistent.
With OJ Frederique and Jadais Richard slowed by injury during spring practice, Lucas got ample reps with the first-team defense and should be a regular in the Hurricanes' rotation.
At full strength, the Hurricanes will have plenty of depth at cornerback. In addition to Lucas and Frederique most likely projecting Miami's starting cornerbacks, Miami also has Richard once he returns, Damari Brown (who played just two games due to injury last season) and transfers Charles Brantley, Emmanuel Karnley and Ethan O'Connor as part of the rotation.
Defensive back Markeith Williams
And while most of the talk around the defensive backs is on the newcomers, one returnee who was noticeable during the spring game Saturday was rising redshirt junior Markeith Williams. He got reps with the first team opposite transfer Zechariah Poyser during the scrimmage with Zaquan Patterson limited with injury.
In 25 games with the Hurricanes, Williams has 31 tackles, two pass breakups and one tackle for loss.
In addition to Williams, Poyser and Patterson, rising sophomore Dylan Day and true freshman Amari Wallace could factor into the rotation as well.
Malachi Toney
The freshman wide receiver out of Plantation American Heritage appears to be cementing himself as the front-runner to be Miami's slot receiver. He showcased his shiftiness and hands during the scrimmage and has been giving junior Ray Ray Joseph a run for his money at the position.
Defensive tackle Donta Simpson
Another true freshman who stood out during spring, Simpson was a standout at Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna.
He was overlooked at the start of spring because he was only a three-star recruit, but Simpson flashed throughout the spring and could find himself as part of Miami's defensive tackle rotation that figures to feature Louisiana Tech transfer David Blay, Justin Scott and Ahmad Moten.

Ramsey sheds light on his departure from Dolphins with eyebrow-raising comments

Former Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey reportedly disrespected coach Mike McDaniel by showing up late to practices or meetings on multiple occasions. So it was curious when Ramsey said this week that he wanted to play for a team 'where there's a lot of respect for the head coach.' To be clear, Ramsey did not publicly say that there is a lack of respect for Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel. But that could be inferred from how he phrased his comments on The Pivot podcast. Ramsey also indicated the trade to the Steelers was a positive because he was able to join 'a team that's going to be able to compete.' Though Ramsey made clear to the Dolphins that he wanted out, the team said it was a mutual decision. Dolphins tight end Tanner Conner, without naming names, said last month that 'Mike hasn't changed at all. I think maybe the emphasis around him and respecting him more as players has changed as we've gotten some players out who might have not been as respectful.' Ramsey offered one bit of praise for the Dolphins, saying 'I do appreciate the Dolphins and them working with me and' his agent, David Mulugheta, and 'not just [saying] this team called and we are going to send you there. It was very open communication. You all have been good to us. I've been good to ya'all. 'Let's go to a team that's going to be able to compete, where there's a lot of respect for the head coach and the staff and a place I can continue to play at a high level… and maybe be versatile… We all had to come to a consensus on what it would be. The Steelers wanted me here, and I wanted to be here.' He said 'he prayed to God' when mulling his future this offseason, indicated that he asked God to 'please reveal what you want from me.' Ramsey's comments on the podcast marked the first time he has publicly discussed the Dolphins since general manager Chris Grier disclosed in April that the team would try to trade him. On the first night of the draft, he posted a photo of rotten oranges, alongside a caption that read as an indictment of the Dolphins organization. 'Who you surround yourself with matters,' the first part of the caption read, followed by a short inscription underneath the picture that said 'If you surround yourself with people who are okay with mediocre, you too will start to be okay with it... surround yourself with people who desire GREATNESS!' On June 30, Miami dealt two disgruntled players -- Ramsey and tight Jonnu Smith -- and a 2027 seventh-round pick to the Steelers. In return, Miami received former Pro Bowl safety Fitzpatrick (who was the Dolphins' 2018 first-round pick), as well as a 2027 fifth-round pick. Smith preferred to stay in Miami but prioritized getting a better contract and remained away from the team's offseason program in search of one. As part of the trade, Ramsey received a $1.5 million raise this season, increasing his salary to $26.6 million, and the Dolphins agreed to pay $7 million of that total salary. Ramsey, 30, has played for the Jaguars (who selected him fifth overall out of FSU in 2016), Rams and Dolphins during a nine-year career. But he became disgruntled in Jacksonville and was traded to the Rams in October 2019. In March of 2023, the Rams shipped him to Miami for a third-round pick and tight end Hunter Long. 'When I got traded from L.A., I was literally praying to go to Miami,' Ramsey said on the podcast. 'It was probably not for all the right reasons. Football will always be very important for me. 'But I had other things in the back of my mind. I want to live in a good city, want my kids to enjoy life, be in the sun... I want my family to like coming to visit me. It was other stuff that added on to that as well.' Ramsey sustained a torn meniscus during his first Dolphins training camp and made his Dolphins debut on Oct. 28 of that 2024 season. Last year, he was ranked 25th by his fellow players on the NFL Top 100 player list. Last September, the Dolphins signed Ramsey to a three–year, $72.3 million contract extension that included $24.3 million guaranteed upon signing, making him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. He asked out less than six months later.

David Pollack predicts college football's national champion

College football analyst and former Georgia Bulldogs defensive end David Pollack considers the Penn State Nittany Lions, Texas Longhorns and Clemson Tigers to be his top national championship contenders. Of that trio, Pollack likes for Clemson to take home the national championship. "I think Clemson's just gonna have a special year," Pollack said on the "See Ball Get Ball" podcast. "And I do think that defense turns it around immediately and I think they got some dudes at positions, man. Like at the most important positions, they've got some really, really good football players that are that are going to be a handful for a lot of people when they play. So give me the Clemson Tigers to win the national championship this football season." Clemson is coming off a 10-4 season where they won the ACC championship and lost in the first round of the College Football Playoff. The Tigers return several All-Americans in quarterback Cade Klubnik, defensive tackle Peter Woods and defensive end T.J. Parker. Clemson is expected to win the ACC championship over the Miami Hurricanes and has an easier path to the playoff than most contenders. In a note for Georgia fans, Pollack thinks it is good that the Dawgs are being doubted and knows Georgia coach Kirby Smart will use that as motivation. Pollack also added that he has been impressed with some lesser-known Georgia players in practice. Follow UGAWire on Instagram or Threads for more Georgia Bulldogs coverage!

Bears LB Noah Sewell discussed goal-line stop vs. Dolphins

Early in Sunday's preseason matchup against the Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears linebacker Noah Sewell, competing for a starting job, made a statement with his play. In the first quarter, as the Dolphins were threatening at the goal line and knocking on the door of scoring a touchdown, Sewell fired through the gap on fourth down and logged a tackle for loss, forcing a turnover on downs. Sewell's play kept the game scoreless early on and put an emphasis on his performance as he competes for the third linebacker spot alongside veterans T.J. Edwards and Tremaine Edmunds. Ending the game with six total tackles, Sewell's one tackle for loss came in one of the most crucial moments in the early stages of the game as he slammed the door on Miami's offense. Following the game, Sewell discussed his goal line stop and how the defense's mentality helped prepare him for that moment. "I knew what kind of situation we were in," Sewell said, via Bears on CHSN. "I was like somebody has to step up, why can't it be me? I just saw the gap open up and I shot my shot. After that play happened I just blacked out and celebrated, everyone was telling me good play, and then I remembered that it was a fourth down stop. Day in and day out, we attack the day the same. Physicality is highly preached in our defensive room so I just try to uphold that." Sewell's performance should give him an upper hand in the battle for the third linebacker spot early in preseason, and his development could be a fun surprise throughout this season.
