Goalkeeper James Trafford to rejoin Manchester City from Burnley

It is understood City will pay £27million for the England Under-21 international, beating Newcastle to his signing after activating a matching rights clause that was included when Trafford was sold to Burnley for £14million in 2023. Trafford joined City's academy at the age of 12 and preferred a return to the club over the Magpies, agreeing to a five-year contract that includes the option of a further 12 months. Trafford's arrival could see German goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, 32, depart in search of a regular starting spot, with the club keen on keeping regular number one Ederson despite speculation linking the Brazilian with a move away. Trafford never made a first-team appearance for City in his first stint at the club, spending time on loan at Accrington and Bolton before former City captain Vincent Kompany signed him for Burnley in the summer of 2023 following their promotion to the Premier League. He lost his starting place late in the season as Burnley struggled defensively on their way to relegation, but was nevertheless called into Gareth Southgate's England squad in March 2024 following an impressive under-21s career. Trafford was included in Southgate's provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2024 but did not make the final cut. He has been included in each of Thomas Tuchel's first two England squads as he awaits his international debut. Last season, Trafford helped Scott Parker's Burnley side set new defensive records on their way to promotion from the Championship, conceding only 16 goals in 45 games - including a remarkable night when he saved two late penalties in a crucial draw with promotion rivals Sunderland. His departure from Turf Moor will be a setback for Parker as the defence on which last season's success was built further fractures following the loss of CJ Egan-Riley to Marseille on a free transfer. Trafford's decision to choose City is also another disappointment for Newcastle in a transfer window that has seen them miss out on several targets.

Newcastle team-mates hoping Alexander Isak will decide to stay

Dan Burn and Bruno Guimaraes are hoping Alexander Isak will choose to stay with them at Newcastle amid reports he has asked to explore a move away. The Sweden international did not travel with the rest of the Magpies squad for a pre-season tour of Asia, with the club stating this was due to a minor thigh injury. Hours later reports emerged that Isak, who has been linked with a big-money move to Liverpool, had told club executives he wanted to look at a transfer away from St James' Park. He is a top striker, his (record over the) last three seasons speaks by itself, he's a top player. But as far as I know he just stayed there (in Newcastle) because of his injury, his treatment with the club. Burn, speaking from Singapore ahead of Newcastle's match against Arsenal on Sunday, told Sky Sports News: 'If we lost any player it would upset a tight-knit group that's been together for two or three years now. 'Obviously any player that leaves, it doesn't help, but from our point of view (we have to) just control what we can control. 'At the moment we're looking forward to getting Alex back when he's fit.' Brazilian midfielder Guimaraes added: 'We want to keep our best players. (Isak) is not here because he's in treatment in Newcastle. Bruno Guimaraes, left, says Newcastle want to keep 'top striker' Alexander Isak, right (Owen Humphreys/PA) 'He is a top striker, his (record over the) last three seasons speaks by itself, he's a top player. But as far as I know he just stayed there because of his injury, his treatment with the club.' Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer said the club had made themselves look 'ridiculous' by citing injury as the reason for Isak's absence. The club have yet to comment on reports Isak has asked to leave. Isak scored 23 goals for Newcastle last season and still has three years left on his current contract.

Roma fans mob and serenade Ireland star Evan Ferguson at airport ahead of loan move from Brighton "If the process is good, that bodes well for projecting how a team or player will perform during the upcoming season. "Evan's end product today—four goals and an assist—is great, but the biggest takeaway from his goals is the variety of weapons in his arsenal. "He's technically proficient, especially for someone of his physical stature. His understanding of how to operate in tight spaces looks good, which is crucial for a striker in Serie A. "He seems comfortable with both feet, and as we all know, he's very strong aerially. "These aspects of his game will help open up different attacking possibilities for Roma's attack, which we know Gasperini will take full advantage of.
