Uphar Tragedy: SC issues notice to Delhi government over delay in construction of trauma centre
New Delhi [India], May 8 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued notice to the Delhi government over a plea that sought a delay in the construction of a trauma centre in memory of the victims of the Uphaar fire tragedy that took the lives of 59 people.
While allowing the plea filed by the association of victims in the Uphaar tragedy (AVUT), a bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh issued notices to the respondents, the Ansal brothers, and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).The bench also allowed the AVUT's request to implead the Delhi government in the case and issued notice to it.
As per the 2015 judgment of the Supreme Court in this case, a fine of Rs 60 crores was imposed on the Ansal Brothers (owners of Uphaar cinema) after they were found guilty of criminal negligence that had led to the tragedy. The amount was subsequently deposited with the Delhi government's Chief Secretary to construct a trauma centre in memory of the victims.
However, on Wednesday, the association of victims in the Uphaar tragedy (AVUT) informed the Supreme Court that ten years had elapsed since the Court's direction in this regard, and no progress has been made to date.
'The funds allocated for the Trauma Centre continue to remain unutilized, and the proposed facility remains a mere concept on paper. The continued inaction and lethargy exhibited by the concerned authorities, despite the clear mandate of this Hon'ble Court, reflects an alarming disregard not only towards judicial directions, but also towards the need for improved healthcare infrastructure', the plea reads.
After hearing submissions in the matter on Wednesday, the top court sought the response of the aforesaid parties in the case. Advocate Diksha Rai represented AVUT in the matter.
After the Ansal brothers were found guilty of criminal negligence, they were sentenced to two-years of rigorous imprisonment by the top-court. However, subsequently one-year sentence was reduced on the condition that the Ansal's jointly deposit a fine of Rs 60 crores with the government.
The fine was directed to be paid by way of a demand draft to the Chief Secretary of the Delhi Government within three months and was directed to be used for the purpose of establishing a trauma centre. (ANI)

Police in Greater Noida and a SWAT team has busted an international online cricket betting racket while investigating a fake kidnapping case and arrested eight accused involved in the racket. 2 fake policemen arrested for theft
Raichur: Two men who posed as police personnel and robbed women of jewellery were arrested in Raichur district on Saturday. The arrested, Ali Tayyab and Abbas Mustafa, would alert unsuspecting women about the risks of fines for wearing gold jewellery. They would then steal the jewellery under the guise of offering assistance in wrapping it, west station police said. In a recent incident, the pair stole a 20-gram gold chain valued at Rs 2 lakh from an elderly woman named Padma in the city. They then escaped on a motorcycle. Following this incident, the West Station police established a special team to capture the offenders. The suspects were arrested on Saturday while they were checking vehicles at a barricade along the highway close to Gabbur police station limits in Devdurg taluk. The investigation uncovered that the suspects previously engaged in gold jewellery thefts in Pune. The police retrieved the gold chain that was taken from Padma.

Air India To Insure Passengers On All Flights For Next Few Months After Ahmedabad Tragedy
Last Updated: A London-bound Air India Flight AI-171 crashed into a residential area of Ahmedabad on Thursday, killing all but one of its 242 passengers and over 30 on the ground. Following the devastating Air India accident that killed more than 260 people, Air India has decided to insure every passenger on all its flights as a precautionary measure, according to a source in the airline. As per the source, each passenger will be covered for approximately Rs 30 lakh to Rs 50 lakh. This move will remain in effect for at least the next few months. Three days after the tragic crash of Air India flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad, which has so far claimed over 270 lives, hospital authorities on Sunday confirmed the identification of 47 victims through DNA matching, including that of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Rupani was among the 242 passengers and crew members on board the London-bound Air India flight AI-171 that crashed on Thursday. Only one passengers managed to miraculously survive the crash on that day, while more than 30 people were killed on the ground. Due to the severe condition of many bodies, as they are burnt or disfigured, authorities are relying on DNA matching for identification. '"A total of 47 plane crash victims have been identified so far through DNA matching. Of these, the bodies of 24 victims have been handed over to their respective families. These deceased were from Rajasthan and different parts of Gujarat," Additional Civil Superintendent Dr. Rajnish Patel told reporters. Meanwhile, Air India on Sunday said it is working closely with other Tata group companies to provide every possible assistance to the families and loved ones of the plane crash victims. The airline in a statement also said that over 400 family members have reached Ahmedabad and are being assisted by its teams on the ground. It had earlier promised complete transparency in the investigation into establishing the cause of the accident. PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, visited the crash site to assess the situation on Sunday. He was briefed on the sequence of events and interacted with the injured at the Civil Hospital. 'I am very pained by the enormity of the tragedy. Everybody is sad. It is our duty to share grief and express our feelings for the victims," Mishra told reporters. Authorities announced Sunday that the second black box, the cockpit voice recorder, had been recovered. This may offer investigators more clues about what went wrong. There were 169 Indian passengers, 53 British, seven Portuguese and a Canadian on board the flight, as well as 12 crew members.
