Eurovision Drama and ‘The Nameless': Movistar Plus+ Exec Touts Focus on Event Programming
Ambition, emotion and event programming — those are some of the key factors that Spanish pay-TV and streaming giant Movistar Plus+ is looking for in its originals, including its Eurovision Song Contest drama miniseries La Canción (The Song).
Susana Herreras, manager of original fiction content production at the company, which is part of Telefónica, touted several examples of such content at the Conecta Fiction & Entertainment industry gathering in Cuenca, Spain, on Tuesday.

She showed a teaser for the recent series La Canción, which tells the story of how Spain under General Franco in 1968 upset the U.K. frontrunner Cliff Richard and his 'Congratulations' to win the Eurovision Song Contest with Massiel's 'La la la.' Created by Pepe Coira and Fran Araújo, and directed by Alejandro Marín, the series stars Carolina Yuste, Patrick Criado, Àlex Brendemühl, and Marcel Borràs. Movistar Plus+ Internacional is distributing the show outside of Spain.
Herreras also teased the psychological thriller series Los Sin Nombre (The Nameless), which is set to debut in June. Created by Pau Freixas and Pol Cortecans, written by the latter and directed by the former, the series stars Miren Ibarguren, Rodrigo de la Serna, and Milena Smit.
'It is key for us to manage to make projects into events,' the Movistar Plus+ executive told Conecta. 'We need to have an emotional connection.'
One of the most important keys for the Spanish player is ambition, Herreras concluded. 'This is how we want to be defined.'
At a time when more and more industry players look for co-productions to put together the budgets needed for the kind of ambition that audiences expect these days, Movistar Plus+ is always open for co-producers where it makes sense. 'We have the will to keep looking for partners,' Herreras explained.
Earlier in the Conecta conference day, executives from the likes of Gaumont Television and Warner Bros. Discovery discussed their original programming plans and the state of the TV industry.

Eric Dane: My Countdown Task Force Leader Is ‘Unapologetic, Determined' — and Wears the Hell Out of a Suit
In Prime Video's upcoming Countdown thriller, Special Agent in Charge Nathan Blythe proves to be a 'formidable foe' for any ne'er-do-wells — and he looks damn good while doing it! Created by Derek Haas (EP of the #OneChicago franchise and co-creator of FBI: International), Countdown is set in motion when an officer with the Department of Homeland Security is murdered in broad daylight. SAC Blythe (played by Euphoria's Eric Dane) is tapped to head up task force 'Hurricane,' comprised of LAPD detective Mark Meachum (Supernatural's Jensen Ackles), DEA badass Amber Oliveras (All Rise's Jessica Camacho), LAPD gangs unit officer Lucas Finau (Young Rock's Uli Latukefu), and FBI agents Keyonte Bell (The Boys' Elliot Knight) and Evan Shepherd (The Flash's Violett Beane). More from TVLine We Were Liars EPs Talk Book-to-Show Changes, Including Which Sinclair Family Member Didn't Make the Cut Does Jensen Ackles' Countdown Hero Have BDE - Big Dean (Winchester) Energy? 'There Are Familiar Aspects,' Says Supernatural Vet The Sandman's Final Season Trailer Features Dream's Return to Hell, Warns 'All Good Stories Come to an End' Though positioned as an 'all-star' team of LEOs, it soon becomes evident that the task force Blythe hand-picked is more a collection of broken toys. 'They don't understand why they work well together…,' Dane told TVLine on Tuesday afternoon, 'but I do.' Blythe himself isn't one to sit behind the desk in his makeshift task force office and simply receive updates. Rather, he involves himself in field work while also doing his damndest to keep District Attorney Grayson Valwell (Merrick McCartha) — an ambitious politico and would-be valor thief — from getting in the team's way. 'I like playing characters that are unapologetic, and determined, and won't back down. And there's a lot of that in Nathan Blythe,' Dane said. 'He's also a very earnest and focused character — I like that about him — but what I really dig about him is the 'stillness' which he sets an example' for the task force's more impulsive members. Ackles, who plays Team Hurricane's most reckless member, described Dane's character as 'a formidable foe for anybody out there trying to make a move,' and a boss who doesn't so much lead by example but 'lead by strength. 'And I love how much he believes in his team,' Ackles added. 'I love that he believes in these people even though they are not the obvious choice.' Describing Meachum et al as 'a ragtag group,' Ackles likened SAC Blythe to 'the coach of the Bad News Bears.' This coach, though, dresses a helluva lot better than Walter Matthau's Morris Buttermaker. When he strides across a tarmac or office plaza, damn, it's like an Armani ad come to life. '[Eric] wears the hell out of a suit!' Ackles declared of his co-star. 'Every time he showed up on the set, I'm like, 'Who makes this? What are you working with here?'' Accepting the compliments from both Ackles and myself, Dane simply said with a smile, 'We have a great wardrobe department.' 10 Greatest Thrillers of the 1990s, Ranked
Everyone loves a good thriller. From 1960's Psycho to 2024's Conclave, suspense movies have been around for decades and will always find an appreciative audience. The genre has been in a bit of a slump lately, with fewer thrillers released in theaters than in its heyday in the '90s. That decade was arguably a high point for thrill-seeking movie fans, with a seemingly endless supply of commercial and critical hits like Basic Instinct with Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone and Se7en with Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow. Watch With Us picks the 10 best thrillers of the '90s and ranks them from the very good to the absolute best. It's a testament to the strength of '90s thrillers that some fan favorites like Primal Fear with Richard Gere and Misery with Kathy Bates didn't make the cut. David (Mark Wahlberg) is every teenage girl's dream: he's polite to parents, attentive to his partner and looks like a Calvin Klein underwear model. That's why 16-year-old Seattle high school student Nicole (Reese Witherspoon) falls for him, and why most of her friends and family like him. But Nicole's dad, Steve (William Petersen), doesn't trust him, and soon his instincts are proven right — David is a psychopath who wants to take over his entire family. Can Steven convince Nicole she's sleeping with the enemy? Fear is a criminally underrated thriller that was largely ignored when it was first released in 1996. It's still effective in 2025, and that's due to the surprisingly layered performances by Witherspoon and Petersen as a father and daughter whose lack of connection is exploited by David. Fear also functions as a great snapshot of Seattle in the mid-'90s, when grunge music and flannel shirts still ruled pop culture. Fear can be rented on Amazon Prime Video. It's every mother's worst nightmare — your children are being threatened, and there's nothing you can do about it. For Claire (Annabella Sciorra), the threat comes not from outside, but from within her home. New nanny Peyton (Rebecca De Mornay) is not what she seems, and her pleasant demeanor hides a quiet rage that threatens not only her friends and family but Claire's life as well. 9 Must-See Thrillers on Netflix Right Now (May 2025) Often derogatorily described as 'the killer nanny movie,' The Hand That Rocks the Cradle is better and subtler than its trashy reputation suggests. As Peyton, DeMornay brings real pathos to her disturbed caretaker and pulls off the impossible trick of making her more sympathetic than Sciorra's frustratingly helpless Claire. The film isn't afraid to be pulpy, and a young Julianne Moore energizes every scene she's in as Claire's chain-smoking friend Marlene, who clocks Peyton's phony angelic act right from the start (and pays for it later on). The Hand That Rocks the Cradle can be rented on Amazon Prime Video. Allie Jones (Bridget Fonda) doesn't like to be alone. After catching her longtime boyfriend cheating on her, she kicks him out and places an advertisement looking for a 'SWF' (Single White Female) roommate to share her spacious Manhattan apartment. That's how she meets Hedy (Jennifer Jason Leigh), who soon moves into Allie's place and slowly takes over her life. Hedy is just as needy as Allie, and she's willing to kill to remain in her new roommate's life. Single White Female has a lurid premise, but the two lead actresses invest enough depth and conviction in their roles to make the thriller better than others. Hedy is clearly disturbed, but Jason Leigh lets you see the full extent of Hedy's lethal neediness. Allie isn't that much different from Hedy, and Fonda excels in showing Allie's subtle transformation from victim to hero by the film's end. Single White Female is one of the more stylish thrillers on this list, and its blue-tinged cinematography gives the film a unique, moody look that is hard to forget. Single White Female is streaming on Pluto TV. 'What's in the box?' Detective David Mills (Brad Pitt) desperately asks his partner, William Somerset (Morgan Freeman), near the end of Se7en. He already knows the answer— and so do we. The events leading up to that devastating moment are just as nauseating and fascinating, making Se7en one of the few thrillers you're glad to have seen and never want to watch again. Two city detectives, David and William, team up to investigate a series of murders based on the seven deadly sins: gluttony, lust, pride — you get the idea. As each murder is increasingly more bizarre and violent than the next, the two detectives race against time to stop him before he claims more victims. Se7en can be rented or purchased on Amazon Prime Video. Malice offers the best value on this list — it's two thrillers in one movie, and there's little connection between the two. A serial rapist is terrorizing a small campus town, and Prof. Andy Safian (Bill Pullman) is both a suspect and maybe the only man who can catch the assailant. Meanwhile, Andy's wife, Tracy (Nicole Kidman), loses the ability to have children due to a botched emergency surgery conducted by Andy's old friend, Jed (Alec Baldwin). Did Jed deliberately harm Tracy due to a God complex? Or is something more sinister at play? 16 Must-Watch Movies on HBO and Max to Stream Right Now (May 2025) Malice is a curiosity — both plots don't really add up, and you're left wondering why it bothered to have two of them instead of one. But that doesn't mean it isn't an effective thriller filled with atmospheric shots of shadowy homes and secret seaside cabins, a creepy score by Jerry Goldsmith and memorably nasty turns by Baldwin and Kidman. Malice also has one of the great comeuppance endings in the thriller genre when the bad guy gets a nice dose of karmic justice. Malice can be rented on Amazon Prime Video. Dr. Helen Hudson (Sigourney Weaver) is a rich and successful criminal psychologist who is agoraphobic due to a past attack by a deranged fan. Her mind is still sharp, though, and she's the only one who is noticing that a serial killer is stalking San Francisco and copying famous killers like Son of Sam and Ted Bundy. She begrudgingly teams up with two detectives, MJ (Holly Hunter) and Reuben (Dermot Mulroney), to find the killer before he strikes again. Copycat is a rare thriller with two female leads who function as both the damsel in distress and the hero of the story. What makes the thriller even more fascinating — and entertaining — is that Helen and MJ don't really like each other. Both women get on each other's nerves, but are smart enough to realize they are the only ones who, together, can catch the copycat murderer. Weaver and Hunter provide real dimension to their characters, and aren't concerned with making them likable or even relatable. You still pull for them to succeed, though, and that's what makes Copycat one of the best thrillers in any decade. Copycat is streaming on Hulu. Max Cady (Robert De Niro) is a career criminal with an axe to grind. He believes his defense attorney, Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte), deliberately lost his case years ago so he could spend time behind bars for the rape of a 16-year-old girl. Now free, Max enacts a revenge plan that involves seducing Sam's daughter, Dani (Juliette Lewis), and alienating Sam from his depressed wife, Lee (Jessica Lange). Sam might have to go beyond the law to protect his family and deal with Max once and for all. A remake of a so-so 1962 thriller of the same name, this version is more nuanced, more violent and infinitely better. Credit director Martin Scorsese for using the bones of Cape Fear's original story and crafting a superior remake that's just as interested in showing how damaged a seemingly typical American family really is as he is at scaring audiences with Max's periodic violent outbursts. De Niro got an Oscar nomination for his unsettling performance, but just as good are Nolte and Lange as a married couple whose love has been overwhelmed by their mutual exhaustion with one another. The great cinematographer Freddie Francis gave the film a dreamy, hallucinatory feel, and Scorsese wisely left Bernard Herrmann's original tense score largely intact. Cape Fear can be rented on Amazon Prime Video. It's New York in the 1950s, and Tom Ripley (Matt Damon), broke and alone, is offered a unique job: travel to Italy to persuade a wealthy man's son, Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law), to return to the United States. Tom accepts, but he quickly likes Dickie's la dolce vita too much and decides to murder him and assume his identity. But how long can Tom keep up this act before being discovered by the authorities and Dickie's increasingly suspicious girlfriend, Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow)? 3 Underrated Thrillers You Should Watch in May 2025 The Talented Mr. Ripley remains the best of all the Ripley adaptations because it excels as an escapist thriller that never loses sight of the loneliness that both fuels and cripples its lead character. Tom wants what others have, and murder is a justifiable means to get to a desired end. Damon was never better as Ripley, and the whole film has a warm, sunny feel that is deceptively welcoming and sets up its brutally cold, gut-punch of an ending. The Talented Mr. Ripley is streaming on Paramount+. Bridget Gregory (Linda Fiorentino) just might be the coldest woman ever to exist in a movie. That's both a compliment and a warning, as nothing can really prepare you for what she does in The Last Seduction, a modest neo-noir from 1994 that's still as brittle and brilliant after all these years. Longtime New Yorker Bridget has stolen some drug money from her abusive dentist husband, Clay (Bill Pullman), and she's lying low in a small town so she can get a quickie divorce. But when she meets dumb, good-hearted Mike, she soon concocts a plan to get rich quick and maybe get rid of Clay without the help of a lawyer. Directed by John Dahl, The Last Seduction doesn't get enough credit for its lean, mean direction (not a second is wasted) and tight story. But this is Fiorentino's show all the way, and she's hypnotic whenever she's on screen. Her Bridget is always cool and collected, even when things don't go according to her plan. By the time the movie ends, you're left feeling impressed by what she pulls off — and a little scared at how easily she does it. The Last Seduction is streaming on Tubi. When rock star Johnny Boz (Bill Cable) is brutally murdered with an ice pick, Detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) thinks his girlfriend, bestselling author Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone), is the killer. She has a thing for ice picks, writing books about murders that eventually occur and hanging around with reformed serial killers — oh, and she also has a thing for Nick. Nick likes to live dangerously, so he begins an affair with her even though he's not convinced she's innocent. Did Catherine kill Johnny? Or is the real killer closer to Nick than he realizes? With its mix of noir, action and even horror, Basic Instinct is a maximalist thriller slickly directed by Paul Verhoeven and cleverly plotted by Joe Eszterhas. It's always entertaining, even if it's often in bad taste, and it's dominated by Stone's blonde femme fatale. It's obvious Catherine is the killer, but the genius of her performance is that she convinces Nick — and you — that she's innocent. The main thrill of Basic Instinct isn't finding out who did it, but piecing together the puzzle afterwards. It's enormously fun, too, and that's why it's the best thriller of the 1990s. Basic Instinct is streaming on Paramount+.

11 Must-Watch Thrillers on Netflix Right Now (May 2025)
Thrillers were once one of the most active genres on Netflix, but there's been a noticeable lack of new offerings in this category for a while. Fortunately for Netflix, the streamer's lean selection allows subscribers to revisit some of the older thrillers like The Hateful Eight, which hit theaters almost a decade ago. The Netflix original thriller, The Devil All of the Time, also had some sizzle when it debuted in 2020 with a ridiculously stacked cast including Tom Holland, Bill Skarsgård, Riley Keough, Robert Pattinson, Eliza Scanlen and Mia Wasikowska. You can find these films and more among the Watch With Us team's picks for the must-see thrillers on Netflix right now. Need more recommendations? Then check out the Great New Movies on Netflix, Max, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and More, the Best Movies on Amazon Prime Video Right Now, the Best Movies on Hulu Right Now and 4 Underrated Movies on Netflix in May his eighth film, writer and director Quentin Tarantino came up with a Western thriller he called The Hateful Eight. Kurt Russell plays John "the Hangman" Ruth, a man who's hard to like, but few could argue with his reputation as a bounty hunter. His latest bounty, "Crazy" Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), is chained to his arm as they travel by stagecoach. As a snowstorm builds, Ruth reluctantly allows a fellow bounty hunter, Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins) to join the group arrives at Minnie's Haberdashery, Ruth can't shake the feeling that something is off as he's surrounded by strangers, including Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), Bob (Chris Mannix) and a Confederate general, Sanford "Sandy" Smithers (Bruce Dern). Ruth isn't sure he can trust this group, or even the two men he rode into town with. But with the snowstorm in full roar, there's nowhere else to go. The Hateful Eight is streaming on Netflix. Donald Ray Pollock, the author of The Devil All the Time, got to narrate the Netflix adaptation of his novel, which weaves through the lives of multiple characters who share unexpected connections. In the late '50s, Arvin Russell (Tom Holland) is a disturbed young man who has very strong feelings for his childhood friend, Lenora Laferty (Eliza Scanlen). And he's increasingly angry over the way Reverend Preston Teagardin (Robert Pattinson) grooms Lenora for a sexual relationship. Arvin is also aware of the sins of his late father, Willard Russell (Bill Skarsgård), which stay with his son as an adult. What Arvin isn't aware of is that his path is also going to cross with Carl (Jason Clarke) and Sandy Henderson (Riley Keough), a dangerous couple that might like to see him Devil All the Time is streaming on Netflix. The late Euphoria star Angus Cloud had one of his final roles in Your Lucky Day as Sterling, a young man who is badly in need of some luck. Sterling thinks his luck has changed when he overhears a lottery winner, Mr. Laird (Spencer Garrett), bragging about his good fortune. When Sterling demands the ticket at gunpoint, chaos ensues in the convenience store, leaving two gunshot victims and three witnesses: Ana Marlene (Jessica Garza), her boyfriend, Abraham (Elliot Knight), and the store clerk, Amir (Mousa Hussein Kraish). Sterling offers to split the prize money with the witnesses if they help him cover up his crimes. But there are several flaws in Sterling's plan, not the least of which is that he's underestimated what other people are willing to do to get that ticket for themselves. By the time this story concludes, there may not be anyone left to enjoy their fortune. Your Lucky Day is streaming on Netflix. For his directorial debut, screenwriter Oren Uziel unravels the story of Shimmer Lake in reverse by revealing that Andy Sikes (Rainn Wilson) is hiding out from his brother, Sheriff Zeke Sikes (Benjamin Walker), after participating in a bank robbery. And before Uziel shows the audience what happened to set up this situation, he teases a mystery that will unfold during the rest of the film. Andy and his friends, Chris Morrow (Mark Rendall) and Ed Burton (Wyatt Russell), thought they pulled off the heist of their lifetimes. However, this trio may be their own worst enemies, especially when they start turning on each other. They collectively have enough money to do almost anything, but greed may be their downfall. Shimmer Lake is streaming on Netflix. Training Day director Antoine Fuqua and True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto teamed up for The Guilty, a remake of a 2018 Dutch thriller. The vast majority of the movie centers on LAPD officer Joe Baylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) in a single location as the story plays out through his phone is stuck on duty answering 911 calls pending a disciplinary hearing when he receives an alarming call from Emily Lighton (Riley Keough). Emily tells Baylor that she's been abducted, but he has limited resources to find her kidnapper, and most of his fellow officers aren't going to help him. Baylor's partner, Sergeant Bill Miller (Ethan Hawke), reluctantly does some of the legwork, but what he finds at Emily's home is disturbing. And time is running out to locate Emily before another tragedy occurs. The Guilty is streaming on Netflix. Maika Monroe has made a name for herself as a scream queen in movies like It Follows, and she's certainly got a lot of reasons to scream in Watcher. Julia already felt like a stranger in a strange land when she moved to Bucharest with her husband, Francis (Karl Glusman). But she can't escape the sensation that she's always being watched. Torchwood's Burn Gorman gives a creepy performance as Daniel Weber, the man Julia believes is stalking her. Daniel claims that Julia is the one harassing him, which the police find more convincing than her story. There is a serial killer on the loose, and even Julia has to wonder if she's letting her fear rule her actions. She'll get her answer — it just may not be the one she's looking is streaming on Netflix. Director David Fincher never discloses the true name of the title character in The Killer, but Michael Fassbender conveys just how diligent and prepared he is for everything except failure. When the Killer misses his contract, the resources of the high-class criminal underworld are turned against nowhere the Killer can run where he won't be found, so he resolves to track down his would-be murderers first. That may involve burning some bridges and leaving a few more bodies behind, but it's nothing he hasn't done many times Killer is streaming on Netflix. Since Amy already blew off the police investigating the case, she'll have to endanger her own life while looking for evidence that Charles is a serial Good Nurse is streaming on Netflix. Gerald's Game is a different kind of horror thriller than Stephen King usually writes, and director Mike Flanagan draws out a lot of tension for a story where the main character is handcuffed to a bed for almost its entire Burlingame (Carla Gugino) only agreed to be bound at the request of her husband, Gerald (Bruce Greenwood). But when Gerald suddenly expires, it leaves Jessie trapped on the bed with little hope for escape. As Jessie's reality breaks down, she sees a monster she calls Moonlight Man (Carel Struycken), who may have come for her husband's soul— and her's as Game is streaming on Netflix. Amanda (Julia Roberts) and Clay Sandford (Ethan Hawke) may have picked the wrong time to go on vacation in Leave the World Behind. Or perhaps they picked the most opportune time without realizing it. The Sandfords and their children rent a cabin in the woods, but even in their isolation, they recognize some troubling events around them. Shortly thereafter, the owner of the cabin, G.H. Scott (Mahershala Ali), arrives with his daughter, Ruth (Myha'la), to take shelter as technology seemingly fails everywhere. What started as a family excursion may turn into a trip that the Sandfords may not come home from. It might even turn out to be the end of the world. Leave the World Behind is streaming on Netflix. Runaway Jury casts John Cusack and Rachel Weisz as a pair of lovers with an audacious plan.
