Greatest car transformations of all time… from Aston Martin's glitzy DB4 revamp to Fiat's whole new look

HUMANS aren't the only ones to go under the knife for a makeover.
Plenty of motors have also undergone dramatic transformations.
Cars can often change body, engine, and even badge to become unrecognisable from their previous selves.
Below are five of some of the most breath-taking motor metamorphoses, featuring everything from Aston Martin supercars to the basic VW Beetle.
Aston Martin DB4 → Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato
"No Mr Bond, I expect you to change you car's bodywork" doesn't quite have the same ring to it, does it?
This iconic four-wheeled star of the 007 film ' Goldfinger ' first wowed onlookers at the London Motor show in 1958, and boasted a 240bph straight-six engine which could accelerate to 100mph and break to a standstill in less than half a minute.
Even this classic underwent some changes, however, as it lost more than 85kg in a bodywork diet, got an engine upgrade, and even a body rework in 1960 by Italian coachbuilder, Zagato.
The result was 19 hugely rare models of the DB4 GT Zagato, which are both eye-catching and eye-wateringly expensive - one sold for $9.52 million at an auction in the US in August 2021.
Citroën 2CV → Citroën Mehari
Back to basics we go.
First drawn up in the 1930s, sold in the 1940s and still being produced in the 1990s, the Citroën 2CV has one of the longest legacies in car history, and was a masterstroke of simple but effective design.

Its body was bolted onto its chassis, which made conversions very easy, and resulted in a number of cousins being produced including the British-built Bijout - but none were quite as striking as the Mehari.
But the Citroën Mehari was built for the optimistic buyer.
It was mechanically identical to the 2CV, but had a plastic body and no roof, so while perfect for a reliable trip to the beach, it wasn't much use for a rainy day.
Fiat 850 → Fiat 850 Coupe
Who doesn't love a glow-up?
The Fiat 850 was first introduced in 1964 as a larger, more powerful version of the 600 which had been brought out nine years earlier.
The technology in the 850 wasn't much of an upgrade, but the car was a relatively successful for small, mid-engine European cars, and it became recognisable for its soft, yet unremarkable look.
This was a feature someone at Fiat clearly took issue with, as they redesigned the 850 and produced the much prettier coupe and spider models.
The cute coupe was described by one car reviewer as 'one of the handsomest, best-balanced designs ever seen on a small car,' and it's rather hard to disagree.
Volkswagen Beetle → Volkswagen Karmann Ghia
The most produced car in history - first commissioned by arguably the worst person in history.
The Beetle did indeed start life as a cheap, functional car for Germans under Nazi rule in the late 1930s, and was commissioned by Adolf Hitler.
But it was resurrected by the British Army for the Allied forces occupying Germany at the end of the Second World War, and was then put into mass production with unrivalled popularity - and even underwent a rebrand as a cute, wholesome family motor.
The Beetle was then given a sporty, Italian makeover by Ghia, and manufactured in Karmann, Germany, thus giving it the joined title Karmann Ghia.
This stylish cousin of the Beetle debuted in 1955, and has since been regarded as one of the most beautiful cars in history.
Mercedes-Benz SLK → Chrysler Crossfire
Outfit change anyone?
First produced in 1996, the Mercedes-Benz SLK was a successful sports offering from the German outfit, with various engine options including a fearsome 3.2 litre V6 AMG version producing 350bhp.
The SLK had many incarnations before Mercedes changed its name in 2016 to the SLC, with one even having a different badge...
Enter the Chrysler Crossfire, the product of a corporate merger between Mercedes and Chrysler, who became DaimlerChrysler and discontinued the original SLK model.
Well, not quite. They gave it an American-style body and badge, and sold it as a Chrysler Crossfire.
Sales of the model started well, but soon tanked, and the Crossfire was pulled in 2007, the same year its parent companies divorced.

With Lance Stroll in a race against time to be fit for the Canadian Grand Prix, Aston Martin need a backup plan - made more difficult by both its reserve drivers planning to race at Le Mans that same weekend Aston Martin could turn to a veteran Formula 1 star to partner Fernando Alonso at the Canadian Grand Prix. That's one of the options available to the team with Montreal native Lance Stroll in a race against time to be fit for his home race. Stroll withdrew from Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix the night before the race, citing pain in his hand and wrist that he had been suffering for some time. Aston Martin said he had experienced discomfort for around six weeks, suggesting he had driven the Saudi Arabian, Miami, Emilia Romagna and Monaco Grands Prix with the issue. ‌ He is no stranger to pain in that area – he missed pre-season in 2023 after undergoing surgery following a cycling accident while training in Spain. He broke his wrist and a toe but, just over two weeks later, raced at the Bahrain Grand Prix and, incredibly, finished sixth. ‌ But it's possible that the accelerated recovery period he went through then, in order to not miss the start of that season, may have led to this recurrence of pain. The team said his issue was "related to the procedure he underwent in 2023", but was no more specific. An Aston Martin spokesperson did not wish to comment on Stroll's personal medical situation. But it is understood that the surgery he skipped the Barcelona race for has been carried out, by Dr Xavier Mir and his team – the same expert who treated him two years ago. Aston Martin chief trackside officer Mike Krack has said that their 'Plan A' is for Stroll to race at the Canadian Grand Prix, a week on Sunday. If he cannot, then they will need an alternative plan – though the timing makes that process a little trickier than it might have been. The Montreal F1 race clashes with another major motorsport event, the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans. And both Aston Martin reserve drivers – Felipe Drugovich and Stoffel Vandoorne – are currently set to take part in the latter, representing Peugeot and Cadillac respectively. ‌ If they need to, Aston Martin have the power to pull either of them away from Le Mans to race in Canada. Drugovich in particular likely won't need much convincing, given he has waited patiently for his first chance to race an F1 car, having been stuck on the sidelines since winning the 2022 Formula 2 title. But they are also not Aston Martin's only options. As a current Mercedes engine customer, they also have access to their pool of reserve drivers including Valtteri Bottas, who has made himself available for all 24 F1 races this year in the hope that it might give him the chance to race and audition for a permanent 2026 seat elsewhere. Aston Martin won't want to rush Stroll and risk another recurrence down the line, nor do they want to rush into a decision over their Montreal driver line-up. "We wait to see what the next days are bringing and then we take a decision," said Krack.

Charles was seen riding in the back of his new top-of-the-range black BMW i7 M70 xDrive after buying the vehicle earlier this year. It was his first outing in the new motor, with the monarch opting to use it to be taken to a Sunday service at St Mary Magdalene Church on t he Sandringham estate at the weekend. The eco-conscious King has long been a champion of nature and green causes and previously spent years as Prince of Wales trying to drive action on environmental issues. ‌ ‌ The green BMW is the latest electric car to be added to the King's fleet, which is now said to include a £160,000 Electric Lotus. It is believed Charles has ordered the Lotus Eletre painted in the traditional Royal Claret livery, which is seen on other royal and state cars, to be used at one of his country estates. He first purchased an electric car back in 2018, when he splashed out on an EV400 HSE Jaguar I-Pace. He has since revealed that his cherished vintage Aston Martin DB6, a 21st birthday present from the late Queen, has also been converted to run on biofuel. In a 2021 interview, when asked if he was a "bit of a Clarkson" and a "petrol head", Charles replied: "Yes, but that was before we knew what the problems were. "But my old Aston Martin, which I've had for 51 years, I've managed to convert. I hardly have a chance to drive it now, but that now runs on waste products, can you believe this, surplus English white wine and whey from the cheese process." ‌ Meanwhile, last year at the annual review of the royal household's finances, Sir Michael Stevens, keeper of the privy purse, revealed the two existing state Bentleys would also be refurbished to run on biofuel, with fully electric state cars a possibility for the future. It comes as other steps the King has taken to reduce his carbon footprint have included installing solar panels on Clarence House and at Highgrove and Windsor Castle, turning down the heat at the Buckingham Palace swimming pool and using biomass boilers that use wood chippings to heat his Birkhall estate. The King once explored his passion for environmental causes in his 2010 book called Harmony: A New Way of Looking At Our World, which called for a shift in how we interact with nature. However, the King previously admitted that he was becoming "a frustrated old man" with his attitude towards the global climate emergency.
