Katiso ‘KT' Molefe back in court in connection with DJ Sumbody's murder

The high-profile case involving Katiso 'KT' Molefe, arrested in connection with the murder of DJ Sumbody, and two of his bodyguards, is expected to resume on Wednesday morning at the Alexandra Magistrates' Court, North of Johannesburg.
Molefe is expected to apply for bail while his three co-accused previously indicated they would not be seeking bail.
Molefe, along with three others, was arrested in Gauteng last month by the police's political killings task team.
The four are facing charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The popular musician, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka, was gunned down in a hail of bullets in Woodmead in November 2022.
Molefe and the three alleged hitmen made a brief appearance in court last week before their case was postponed.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), DJ Sumbody, DJ Vintos, Armand Swart, and Don Tindleni were all killed using the same AK-47 rifle - and all died in similar circumstances, each in a hail of bullets, at different times.
Police believe the same suspects may be responsible for all the murders.
This was revealed outside the Alexandra Magistrates' Court last week on Tuesday during the appearance of Molefe and three of the alleged hitmen, Musa Kekana, Michael Pule Tau and Floyd Mabusela, who are now also charged with the murder of Don Tindleni.

Speaking to the media, SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that the firearms used in DJ Sumbody's killing were the same as those used in the murders of DJ Vintos, Swart, and Tindleni.
The court postponed the bail application of Molefe - believed to be the alleged mastermind behind DJ Sumbody's murder - to Wednesday, August 6.
All four accused remain in custody.
Mathe said that the accused have now been charged in connection with multiple killings, including the one of DJ Vintos, real name Hector Buthelezi, was killed in March 2022 outside a nightclub in Orlando East.
His killers, who were reportedly driving a BMW X3, were never found.
DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza, were assassinated in Woodmead in November 2022.
Meanwhile, Don Tindleni was shot dead in March 2023 on the N1, near the N17 offramp, while driving his BMW 5 Series, while Armand Swart was killed in April 2024 in what police believe was a case of mistaken identity.
'Our investigation has brought us to this point, where we are linking the AK-47, as well as three pistols found in the Swart case, to all four murders,' said Mathe.
'We have said previously that we do not only have the ballistic expert report that links these suspects to these hits, but there is other overwhelming evidence,' she added.

Alleged mastermind behind DJ Sumbody's murder returns to court for bail application
JOHANNESBURG - The man accused of calling a hit on two popular DJs, Katiso "KT" Molefe, is expected back in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court on Thursday to continue with his bail application. Molefe started his bid for bail in the court last week after he was arrested in July in connection with the 2022 murder of Oupa Sefoka, who was popularly known as DJ Sumbody. A week later, Molefe was charged with the murder of DJ Vintos, a Soweto DJ whose real name was Hector Buthelezi. Molefe's lawyers told the Alexandra Magistrate's Court that it was exceptional that he must apply for bail in a lower court when he was already deemed eligible for bail by the high court. When Molefe was arrested in July for being the alleged mastermind behind the murder of DJ Sumbody, he was already out on bail and on trial for allegedly orchestrating the murder of Vereeniging engineer, Armand Sward. But in an affidavit, the investigating officer told the court that Molefe was a dangerous criminal with no regard for human life. Police also believe that if Molefe is granted bail, there is a likelihood that he will destroy evidence, as one of the AK-47 rifles used in the shooting of DJ Sumbody remains missing. Both the State and Molefe's lawyers will make their closing arguments on Thursday afternoon.

Alleged killers of Mpumalanga cop traced to Eswatini
On August 14, the Royal Eswatini Police (REP), with the assistance of Commissioner Vusie Manoma Masango, traced three suspected killers to Eswatini. Lowvelder reports that the suspects allegedly shot and killed Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni on August 8, while he and fellow officers were responding to a burglary at a business centre in Schoemansdal. According to the REP, two additional suspects were later traced to the Sishweleni region. When they noticed the police, they allegedly opened fire, prompting officers to return fire and fatally shoot both suspects. In a statement, National Commissioner of Police General Fannie Masemola thanked the cross-border operation and Masango for assisting in tracing the killers to Eswatini. 'On behalf of SAPS and Mtshweni's family, we would like to thank the REP, led by Masango, as well as the Umbutfo Defence Force for assisting Mpumalanga SAPS in locating these killers. We look forward to strengthening and deepening our co-operation on law enforcement matters. 'The attacks and killing of our police officers are a serious concern, and we call on communities to help put a stop to these killings. From April 1 to date, we have already lost six police officers; we cannot afford to lose more. We need as many boots on the ground as possible to prevent and combat crime,' says Masemola. Further investigation led Eswatini police to Mantambe in Shiselweni, where a third suspect allegedly took his own life with a pistol before police could arrest him. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli extended his condolences to Mtshweni's family. 'Mtshweni's sacrifice is a stark reminder of the risks our police officers face every day. It is a profound loss, not only for his family and friends, but for the entire SAPS community and the society he diligently served. Thank you for allowing him to dedicate his life to serving our nation. Your support and sacrifices have undoubtedly contributed to his ability to uphold the values we hold dear in SAPS.' SAPS leadership, led by Masemola, will attend the funerals of three members who died in the line of duty this past week. Mtshweni will be buried on Saturday, August 16, in Schoemansdal.
