Teens outperform Gemini, ChatGPT at top international math Olympiad
Held in Queensland, Australia, the 2025 edition of the global competition consisted of 641 young mathematicians under the age of 20 from 112 countries, five of whom achieved perfect scores of 42 points, something neither AI model could replicate, a report in Popular Science stated.
Google announced that its advanced Gemini chatbot managed to solve five of the six problems presented at the competition, earning a total of 35 out of 42 points, a gold-medal score.
'We can confirm that Google DeepMind has reached the much-desired milestone, earning 35 out of a possible 42 points — a gold medal score,' IMO president Gregor Dolinar stated in a quote shared by the tech giant, the report said.
'Their solutions were astonishing in many respects. IMO graders found them to be clear, precise, and most of them easy to follow,' he added. OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, also confirmed that its latest experimental reasoning model achieved a score of 35 points, the report added.
According to OpenAI researcher Alexander Wei, the company evaluated its models using the same rules as the teen competitors. 'We evaluated our models on the 2025 IMO problems under the same rules as human contestants. For each problem, three former IMO medalists independently graded the model's submitted proof,' Wei wrote on social media, as per the report.
This year marks a significant leap for AI in math competitions. In 2024, Google's model earned a silver medal in Bath, UK, solving four out of six problems. That attempt took two to three days to solve. In contrast, the latest Gemini model completed this year's test within the official 4.5-hour time limit.
The IMO acknowledged that technology firms had 'privately tested closed-source AI models on this year's problems,' which were the same as those faced by the human contestants.

OpenAI CEO teases launch of new AI models and products in coming months
It is almost the time of year when tech giants will start announcing new technologies, products, and services. As we wait for the big AI revelation, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has teased upcoming launches that will include AI models, products, new features, and more. The indication of the upcoming launch gives hope for OpenAI's new generation AI model, the GPT-5, for which we have been waiting for quite a long time. While Altman did not reveal any specific details about the launch, he simply showed excitement and nervousness with a short warning for small hiccups during the transition. OpenAI has planned to launch new AI models, products and features in the coming months.(Bloomberg) Also read: OpenAI prepares to take on Google Chrome with AI-driven browser, launch expected in weeks OpenAI's new AI model and products launch Sam Altman, OpenAI CEO, shared a post on X (formerly Twitter), revealing that it's launching several things in the coming months. From new AI models, features, to products, the company have several new things planned before the end of 2025. The post said, 'We have a ton of stuff to launch over the next couple of months,' creating curiosity over what the company has planned and what new will be announced. The post further cautions for some hiccups that could come along the way to introduce models and products. Altman said, 'Please bear with us through some probable hiccups and capacity crunches.' Earlier, when OpenAI launched GPT-4o's image generation capabilities, ChatGPT experienced a major system overload, causing a delay in several functionalities. But he also assures fans that the upcoming launches will be exciting. Elon Musk Predicts AI Will Turn Coding into a Recreational Pursuit
Musk's comments reflect the broader trend of artificial intelligence increasingly automating aspects of software engineering. The once tedious and time-consuming processes of debugging, writing repetitive code, and documentation are now being streamlined by AI. The impact is particularly evident in the development of AI agents capable of handling complex programming tasks with minimal human input. Notably, Musk was one of the original co-founders of OpenAI. However, he eventually parted ways with the organization and went on to establish his own AI venture, xAI, which later merged with the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Today, xAI operates Grok, a conversational AI assistant designed to compete with leading AI models such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. In its latest update, xAI introduced Grok 4 Code, a powerful coding assistant that supports over 20 programming languages. This tool enables developers to write, debug, and understand code using natural language directly within their preferred code editors. This move positions Grok 4 Code as a direct rival to OpenAI's Codex, a software engineering agent launched earlier this year with the ambition of creating AI systems that can autonomously develop software. Similarly, Microsoft has entered the fray with GitHub Spark AI, a tool capable of generating entire applications from simple natural language prompts. These innovations are part of a larger shift in the tech landscape, where AI is not just augmenting developer productivity but redefining the role of human coders altogether. As Musk suggests, the necessity for manual programming may fade, paving the way for a future where coding becomes an expressive outlet rather than a professional obligation. While the transition may take time, the trajectory is clear: AI is fundamentally reshaping how software is built, maintained, and conceptualized. And if Musk's predictions hold true, tomorrow's coders may resemble artists more than engineers.
