An American Airlines Boeing 737-800 aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing at Denver International Airport on Thursday after its crew reported engine vibrations. Following the landing, an engine caught fire, prompting an emergency evacuation via slides, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
American Airlines Flight 1006, which was en route from Colorado Springs to Dallas, diverted to Denver, landing at approximately 5:15 p.m. (2315 GMT). The airline confirmed that all 172 passengers and six crew members safely exited the aircraft. However, Denver International Airport officials later reported that 12 people sustained minor injuries and were transported to hospitals.
Dramatic footage posted on social media captured passengers standing on the plane's wing while thick smoke billowed from the engine. American Airlines stated that the aircraft had landed and taxied to the gate when it experienced an 'engine-related issue.'

Huge crowds bid farewell to Pope Francis

AFP | Vatican City Tens of thousands of mourners paid last respects to Pope Francis at St Peter's Basilica yesterday, on the first of three days of lying in state for the head of the world's Catholics. Pilgrims and tourists queued for hours to file past the open coffin of the Argentine pontiff, who died on Monday aged 88. 'We wanted to say thank you to one of the most humble popes,' said Portuguese medical student Francisca Antunes, 21, after leaving the Vatican basilica with a friend. 'It felt really good to be in there,' she told AFP. By 7:45 pm (1745 GMT), almost nine hours after the doors of the basilica opened to the public, more than 19,400 people had paid their respects, the Vatican said. Simonetta Marini, a 67-yearold from Rome, praised Francis's human touch and defence of the world's underdogs, which helped steer the Catholic Church towards a more inclusive, compassionate path. 'I came to say a last goodbye to a great man. He stood for the people,' Marini said. Francis was an energetic reformer who took over as leader of the world's 1.4 billion Catholics in 2013.

Fire kills five including four children in Slovak slum

Four children and an adult died in a fire in an eastern Slovak slum late on Wednesday, rescue services and local officials said. The fire occurred in a settlement in the town of Velky Saris near the eastern Slovak city of Presov, around 300 kilometres (190 miles) northeast of the capital Bratislava. "The fire in a settlement claimed the lives of four little children and one adult," Velky Saris's Mayor Viliam Kall said on Facebook. "Eight huts have burned down and the unfortunate incident affected around 30 people," he said. Eleven adults and seven children were evacuated to a local community centre. The news site said one of the victims was a baby. "Unfortunately, we found five lifeless people," ambulance spokeswoman Petra Klimesova told AFP. She said rescuers had also treated a girl with an acute stress reaction at the site. Voluntary firefighters from the nearby village of Zupcany said they were sent to the site shortly after 10:30 pm (2130 GMT) on Wednesday. "It was a fire of simple housing huts. Unfortunately, while putting the fire out we found the burned remains of five people," they said on Facebook.
