Moses Lake man accused of selling stolen Spokane Fire Department gear to undercover detective
Christopher J. Rock was booked into the Grant County Jail on suspicion of first-degree trafficking stolen property and second-degree possession of stolen property.
A Spokane firefighter recognized the Spokane Fire Department gear on Facebook Marketplace and then notified his supervisor, said Justin de Ruyter, fire department spokesman.
Moses Lake police's Street Crimes Unit received a phone call Friday from the fire department informing detectives that stolen fire department equipment was being sold on Facebook in Moses Lake, police said in the release.
Police identified the suspect as Rock, and an undercover detective made contact with the suspect and negotiated the sale of the stolen gear. The undercover detective met with Rock in a grocery store parking lot and purchased the equipment, which de Ruyter valued at about $4,500.
Detectives then followed Rock until he was away from the busy parking lot and arrested him, according to police.
De Ruyter said he's unsure how Rock acquired the equipment, which he said was "bunker gear."
The gear includes a helmet, jacket, pants and a firefighter breathing apparatus, said Moses Lake Police Capt. Jeff Sursely.
De Ruyter said the fire department will get the equipment back.

Mainland High teacher charged with aggravated battery on a person 65 or older
A Mainland High School teacher was arrested Aug. 19 after police said she punched her 77-year-old former romantic partner. Lori Maree Coombs, 56, was charged with felony aggravated battery on a person 65 years or older. She was released on her own recognizance by a judge, according to Volusia County Branch Jail records. Coombs is prohibited from being on the Mainland campus while the arrest is under investigation, according to a message sent to parents from Principal Melissa Fraine. The message, now deleted, was posted in the comments section of the Daytona Beach Mugshots Facebook page by "Briana Nicolle." When reached by The News-Journal, the poster said her son attends Mainland High School, and she received the message by email Tuesday morning. According to the post, Fraine wrote in her email to Mainland High families that she was informing them of Coombs' arrest as required by Florida law. "Teacher Lori Coombs was recently arrested for aggravated battery on a person 65 years+," Fraine said in her message, adding that police and school officials were investigating the incident. Volusia County schools' spokesperson Danielle Johnson could not be reached on Wednesday, Aug. 20, for comment. Police: Coombs argued with victim over infidelity Daytona Beach police said they were called to the alleged victim's residence on Aug. 18, where he reported that he and Coombs had been in a relationship for two years. Coombs was moving out, and she came to the home to get her belongings, the arrest report noted. The victim said he didn't have any of her things and invited Coombs into the home to look. The two began arguing over infidelity, and Coombs started hitting the victim with a closed fist, police said. The victim blocked the blows and, in the process, suffered a small laceration caused by Coombs' fingernails, the report stated. After her arrest, Coombs told police the victim made a sexual comment toward her when she bent down to pick up a pair of socks, the arrest affidavit said. Coombs said that the victim reached down to grab the socks but hit her arm and suffered a scratch. She denied entering the victim's home or striking him, according to her arrest report. Coombs previously arrested for domestic battery, charges dropped Court records reviewed on Wednesday, Aug. 20, show Coombs was charged in 2020 for slapping and scratching a 58-year-old man she was romantically involved with. The alleged victim was helping her grade papers and made a mistake, according to an arrest report. She was charged with misdemeanor battery and was released on her own recognizance. The State Attorney's Office filed a "no information" document saying she would not be prosecuted, court records show. Donna Adelson trial Day 2 live updates: Court makes strides in jury selection
Jury selection resumes for a second day Aug. 20 in the murder trial of Donna Adelson, who is accused of helping to orchestrate the 2014 plot to kill Florida State University law professor Dan Markel. Roughly 300 people have been summoned for jury duty. Leon Circuit Judge Stephen Everett and lawyers for the state and defense are questioning each of the jurors individually behind closed doors as part of a pre-screening to find out how much media they have consumed about the case and whether that has affected their ability to serve as fair and impartial jurors. Jurors who have passed that test have been asked to return to the Leon County Courthouse at 11 a.m. Thursday for group jury selection, the last step before a final panel is picked. Just like the first day of jury selection, 50 potential jurors will be questioned in the morning and another 50 in the afternoon. On Aug. 19, 64 out of 102 potential jurors were asked to come back for group jury selection. Pretrial publicity has been a major issue raised by the defense in previous Markel trials. The defendant's son, Charlie Adelson, who was convicted in Markel's murder in 2023, claimed in his appellate brief filed in May that Everett erred by not granting a defense motion for a change of venue. Donna Adelson's attorneys also asked Everett to move the trial out of town, though he has declined so far to do so. Markel was shot in the head on July 18, 2014, after pulling into his garage of his Betton Hills home ― a shocking crime that happened as he and his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, the defendant's daughter, were feuding in court over custody of their two sons. Prosecutors have long alleged the Adelson family wanted Markel out of the picture so Wendi Adelson and the boys could relocate to South Florida. Prosecutor asks to allow evidence about changing last name of Markel's sons Assistant State Attorney Georgia Cappleman asked Judge Stephen Everett this morning, Aug. 20, about whether communication between Donna Adelson and her daughter, Wendi Adelson, about changing her two sons' last name from Markel to Adelson can be admitted into evidence. Everett asked Cappleman about the purpose of the evidence. She replied that it was "part of the motive to erase the father' from the lives of Wendi Adelson and Dan Markel's sons. Everett asked whether there were any communications or other evidence that would show a connection between mother and daughter as it pertains to the name change. Cappleman said there are communications between Donna and Wendi Adelson about their last names before the name change occurred. Everett asked Cappleman to provide a copy of the communication. Travis Decker Manhunt: Police Share New Evidence in Daughters' Murders
Originally appeared on E! Online Authorities are sharing more information surrounding Travis Decker's case. Over two months after the bodies of his and ex-wife Whitney Decker's daughters Paityn, 9, Evelyn, 8, and Olivia, 5, were discovered at a campground in Leavenworth, Wash., police have linked the patriarch's DNA to the plastic bags used to kill the girls, whose causes of death were determined to be suffocation, per the autopsies completed by the Medical Examiner. 'Two of the victims each had two separate bags over their heads and the third victim had three separate bags over their head,' the Chelan County Sheriff's Office said in an Aug. 19 press release shared to Facebook. 'In addition, several cable ties were located on the ground in the immediate area of the bodies. These plastic bags and cable ties were collected that night by the Washington State Patrol Crime Response Team.' After sending this evidence for DNA analysis, authorities said that they believe Travis—who is wanted on first-degree charges of murder and kidnapping—is the 'only suspect involved in committing these homicides.' Regarding the cable ties found at the scene, the police department added, 'One DNA profile was obtained from the cable ties collected at the scene. That DNA sample matched the profile for Travis Decker. No other DNA profiles were obtained from the cable ties.' The sheriff's office, who has previously described Travis, 32, as "well versed in wilderness survival and capable of spending days or even weeks in the wilderness on his own and with very little equipment,' also confirmed that their search efforts for the army veteran continue.
