Thirsk: Retired teacher who has appeared on 32 TV quiz shows
He enters into the spirit with brightly-coloured outfits and his laugh, likened to that of actor Brian Blessed, is a hit with audiences. He faced Anne Robinson in 2007 and Bradley Walsh in 2009. His first appearance was on Say the Word in 1997, and other credits include Pass the Buck, Breakaway and Two Tribes.Cornelius says his favourite host was Walsh on The Chase because "he did his best to put all the contestants at their ease" and has "grown with the show".He would even consider becoming one of the Chasers himself in future.
He is also an avid collector of Trivial Pursuit editions, which help him accrue knowledge."In order to become a good quizzer I think you need to know as much as you can about as much as is out there."Different versions have different questions in - I particularly like the style of questions in Trivial Pursuit."Asked whether he finds the questions difficult, he says: "Not now, no - because very often I would remember a question for my wrong answer to it, rather than the right answer."It takes a while to get through 6,000 questions and answers and to remember the right answer, rather than the wrong answer."
Cornelius has earned £17,500 in prize money from his attempts. but has never "won big" and regrets that he was never accepted onto Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?"I think most people who haven't been on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? would have loved the opportunity, and I spent a lot of money trying to get on when we used to have to make a telephone call back in the late 1990s, to no avail."He is getting close to the record set for the most appearances, being just two short of David St John's 34, which was verified in London in 2014."I hope to beat the record one day, but a lot of the shows now have a push for new, younger players."Listen to highlights from North Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, catch up with the latest episode of Look North or tell us a story you think we should be covering here.

Mark Labbett's Celebs Go Dating journey will end in 'surprising' way after viral clip
Celebs Go Dating's Anna Williamson has hinted how The Chase star's journey could end after he went viral for 'falling asleep' during his first romantic meet up on the show. The Chase star Mark Labbett has certainly made his entrance on Celebs Go Dating. In the most recent episode, which aired on Wednesday, August 20, he stepped out his comfort zone for his first date. Despite being unexperienced in the dating world, relationship guru Anna Williamson told us that she believes Mark was a "fantastic signing" from the E4 production team. She also hinted at how his dating journey will end, following its turbulent start. "Mark is fantastic, he's been a brilliant signing," dating coach Anna told the Record. "Well done to the casting for welcoming Mark and of course, well done to Mark for wanting to come on." Anna also touched on Mark's TikTok viral moments following his appearance on Wednesday. "We knew that was going to happen," Anna admitted, suppressing a laugh before recalling how the quiz whizz - known as The Beast - yawned his way through his date with Natalie, before mistakingly attempting to drink a candle instead of his drink. Anna noted: "I think that shows how much work we need to do with him. But we are always there to champion people including Mark quite rightly, and how he finishes the series, I think, will be very very surprising to people, in a good way." Ahead of his debut on the show, Mark said: 'I've been single for most of my life. I'm a little bit on the spectrum." Mark says he finds human signals much harder than trivia. "Facts are easy, people are complicated," he added. In the scenes aired on Wednesday,Mark could be seen struggling to stay awake and at one point even closed his eyes for several seconds. He had them shut for so long that show narrator Rob Beckett humorously remarked he was "dropping off". Rob then added: "Catching 40 winks whilst eating is a skill." In his previous love life off screen, Mark was married to Katie, who was 27 years younger than him, from 2014 to 2020. The pair first crossed paths on Facebook in 2010. However, it wasn't until 2012 when sparks started to fly after Mark invited her to a celebrity special of the show. After their split, Mark went on to date Hayley Palmer, although the pair went their separate ways just a year later shortly after marking their anniversary in May last year, 2024. The Sky TV presenter informed her followers at the time: "It is with regret I announce that myself and Mark have gone our separate ways. We had the best year together, and I truly wish him all the very best for the future." "Off I go to listen to Taylor Swift ", she added to the post alongside a broken-heart emoji.

Watch excruciating moment The Chase's Mark Labbett FALLS ASLEEP in middle of dinner date - and wakes to make another baffling faux pas
He is known for being quick off the bat as he savagely eliminates wannabe quizzers on The Chase. But Mark 'The Beast' Labbett's energy dipped in his very first date on the new series of Celebs Go Dating - with the quizzer actually yawning in his date's face. Mark, 60, joined fellow quiz lover Natalie out for a drink but appeared exhausted throughout, continually yawning in her face and even closing his eyes. It was so obvious that the narrator, comedian Rob Beckett, could be heard saying: 'Catching 40 winks whilst eating is a skill.' The moment became even more excruciating when he picked up a tea light from the table and tried to drink from it, mistaking it for his drink. 'Oh that's not a drink,' Mark said, while later in a piece to camera added: 'That was so embarrassing. I'm trying my best for Natalie, but she's not getting the best out of me. Sorry love.' Mark, who was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2017, previously spoke of how filming ended prematurely one day after he had a hypoglycemia episode - but it is unknown if it was this day. Hypoglycemia is another word for low blood sugar, which sees the glucose level in your blood drop too low. Recalling the moment at the time, Mark said: 'One night, I had a hypoglycaemic attack. I might have been a bit grumpy that night. I apologised to everyone after.' Mark got diagnosed with the condition after a routine check-up. Previously opening up how it happened, Mark told The Express: 'I've got skin that doesn't heal properly in my lower legs 'A nurse looked at me and she asked, "Are you sure you are not diabetic?" They took a test and she said, "'Yes, you're diabetic".' The painful date left viewers cringing, as they said they felt sorry for Natalie and branded Mark 'rude'. They wrote: 'The Beast's first date has me both laughing and cringing in equal measures,'; The painful date left viewers cringing, as they said they felt sorry for Natalie and branded Mark 'rude' '^The Beast^ is yawning almost as much as I am,'; 'Mark is not coming across well here. Feel sorry for his date,'; 'How that woman hasn't got up and walked from the date with Mark I don't know,'; 'never been as uncomfortable watching a date on tv as i'am watching the beasts on,'; 'Happy to big himself up then yawns in her face the moment she speaks, Jack Nicholson as good as it gets vibes,'; Mark has recently lost a lot of weight, after ballooning to 29 stone at his heaviest. After being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, he has since lost a whopping 10 stone and managed to do so from changing his diet and doing more exercise. Last year, he revealed that he now has the same figure that he had when he was 18. He told OK!: 'I've got roughly the same physique as I had when I was playing rugby at 18 years old, but I've got less muscle so that might take it down even more.' It was recently reported that Mark is 'dating' a stunning beautician after he 'instantly connected' with her on Celebs Go Dating. Mark signed up for the E4 series after he split from TV presenter Hayley Palmer. The 6ft 6in TV personality got close to 5ft 2in Deanne Perkins, 57, after they met on the show. The pair have quietly been seeing each other in recent weeks, according to reports. A source told The Sun: 'Mark and Deanne instantly connected and have been enjoying getting to know each other away from the cameras.
