Malaysia reaffirms sovereignty over Sulawesi Sea blocks, rejects ‘Ambalat' term

Malay Mail2 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 — Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Malaysia has reaffirmed its sovereign rights over the maritime area known as Blok ND-6 and ND-7 in the Sulawesi Sea, rejecting Indonesia's use of the term Ambalat to describe the disputed region.
Mohamad Hasan, also known as Tok Mat, said that Indonesia's claim which refers to Ambalat covers parts of the Sulawesi Sea.
'Malaysia maintains that Blocks ND-6 and ND-7 are within Malaysian sovereign territory and the country's sovereign rights based on international law, supported by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling in 2002.
'Therefore, the more accurate term for the area in question that aligns with Malaysia's position is the Sulawesi Sea, not Ambalat,' he told the Dewan Rakyat today.
He explained that Ambalat is a term used by Indonesia to justify their claim to the area.
To ensure clarity and prevent the issue from being politicised or exploited as campaign material particularly in the run-up to state elections, Mohamad Hasan said the ministry is ready to provide briefings to Members of Parliament and Sabah state assemblymen on the matter.
'We don't want this issue to be used to mislead the public, especially in Sabah and Sarawak. If there is a request, the ministry is prepared to arrange a suitable time for briefings to ensure all parties understand the issue,' he added.

Audit mechanism for additional water tariff adjustments to be key focus in Dewan Rakyat today

KUALA LUMPUR: The monitoring and audit mechanism for the additional revenue from water tariff adjustments, which was promised by state water operators for the purpose of repairing and developing water supply infrastructure, will be a key focus of today's Dewan Rakyat sitting. According to the Order Paper on the Parliament portal, the question is being raised by Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin) to the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister during Minister's Question Time. Mohd Isam also wants to know what action will be taken against operators who fail to meet key performance indicators (KPIs) after receiving the benefits of the tariff adjustment. During the same session, Lim Guan Eng (PH-Bagan) will ask the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry to state the steps the government has taken to achieve a 19 percent tariff negotiation result and the concessions Malaysia has offered to the United States. Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman (PN-Sik) will question the Foreign Minister on the steps the government is taking to urge the international community, particularly the United Nations (UN), to halt the continuous attacks by the Zionist regime on Gaza. During the oral question and answer session, Syerleena Abdul Rashid (PH-Bukit Bendera) will ask the Minister of Transport to state the efforts that have been and are being taken to facilitate access for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to public transportation, similar to Korea, which uses sign language and Braille in the announcement systems at stations and on mass transit vehicles. Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari (PH-Gombak) will ask the Women, Family and Community Development Minister about the number of informal workers in the care economy sector that have been registered by the ministry, as well as the policies and preparations for an aging society. After the session, members of parliament will take part in the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which was presented by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last Thursday. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, presented the 13MP under the theme "Reshaping Development," which outlines the country's strategic plans for the period from 2026 to 2030. Malaysia-Russia ties strengthened by friendship, says King

MOSCOW: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, stated that his state visit to Russia reflects his sincere desire to strengthen bilateral ties. He affirmed Malaysia's view of Russia as a trusted and important partner. 'Our diplomatic relations span more than five decades, having been formally established in April 1967,' said Sultan Ibrahim. He noted that Malaysia was among the earliest ASEAN nations to establish ties with Moscow. 'As a Russian saying goes, friendship is more valuable than money,' he remarked. He expressed belief that friendship will continue shaping Malaysia-Russia relations for mutual benefit. Sultan Ibrahim made these remarks during an official meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders exchanged official gifts at St. Andrew's Hall before attending a state banquet in the Granovitaya Chamber. The historic meeting marks the first state visit by a Malaysian Head of State to Russia. The visit celebrates 50 years of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Russia, established in 1967. Prior to the official ceremony, Sultan Ibrahim paid respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Alexander Garden. The site holds deep significance as a memorial to Soviet soldiers who perished in World War II. The Moscow Kremlin, a UNESCO World Heritage site, served as the backdrop for the high-profile meeting. The complex includes the Grand Kremlin Palace, the official residence of the Russian president. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin accompanied His Majesty. Also present were Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin and Malaysian Ambassador to Russia Datuk Cheong Loon Lai. President Putin was joined by senior Russian officials, including Aide for International Affairs Yury Ushakov. Other attendees included Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov and Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov. Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defence, Alexander Pankin and Alexander Fomin, were also present. Sultan Ibrahim's visit underscores the role of Malaysia's monarchy in strengthening international diplomacy. The trip, lasting until August 10, was conducted at Putin's invitation. - Bernama
