A rail union is demanding the NSW government modify Sydney Metro trains to have staff cabins, despite the service being driverless.
The demand is part of ongoing enterprise agreement negotiations between the Rail, Train and Bus Union (RTBU) and Metro Trains Sydney (MTS).
The RTBU has insisted cabins on the driverless Metro will keep workers safe in the face of escalating violence on the rail network.
'Cabins are needed on board for the safety of staff - they are not 'driver's cabins' as there are no drivers on Metro trains,' a spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.
'As incidents of anti-social behaviour and assaults have increased across the rail network, workers need a safe space aboard the train to ensure both their safety and the safety of passengers.
'There has been no discussion with the operator or Transport for NSW regarding the infrastructure cost to install the cabins.'
The Opposition has lashed the request, with NSW Liberal Deputy Leader and Shadow Transport Minister Natalie Ward describing the cabins as a 'union stitch-up'.
'The RTBU leadership have already torpedoed the train network, they need to keep their hands off the Metro,' Ms Ward said in a statement to Daily Mail Australia.
'The Government should rule out yet another union stitch-up that will cost taxpayers millions of dollars and disrupt commuter services.'
Ms Ward also questioned the practicality of retrofitting the advanced rail system.
'We already have a driver on the driverless Metro, retro-fitting cabins onto these state-of-the-art trains is pathetic and an example of why Sydney is losing momentum under the Government,' she said.
In a bulletin issued to members this week, the RTBU said the proposal is 'being actively considered' by MTS.
'This is a very large piece of work and will involve negotiating with Transport for NSW, Sydney Metro and the regulator ONRSR as it involves altering approved infrastructure,' the union stated.
NSW Transport Minister John Graham told Daily Mail Australia the government would 'not be supporting the changes'.
'Metro trains are driverless and they will remain so,' he added.
Other requests from the RTBU include body-worn cameras for staff, pressure mats, and designated staff seating at Metro stations.
Industrial action has plagued the Sydney Metro in recent months and is being blamed for delays to the under-construction Sydenham to Bankstown extension.
Disruptions on the line are estimated to have resulted in 130 days lost to industrial action, with the project now delayed from its original opening planned for this year.
A union stand off between the state government and Sydney Trains saw major delays and headaches for travellers earlier this year.
Industrial action on Sydney Trains has been suspended until July 1, following a ruling by the Fair Work Commission.
The RTBU remain in negotiations with the MTS, and are set to meet again on May 14.

SYDNEY, June 6 (Reuters) - China is taking further steps towards high seas boarding of fishing boats in the Pacific for the first time, risking tensions with Taiwanese fleets and U.S. Coast Guard vessels that ply the region, Pacific Islands officials told Reuters. The Chinese Coast Guard demonstrated the capabilities of one of its largest ships, used to enforce maritime law in the Taiwan Strait, to Pacific Island ministers last week. It is also actively involved in debates on the rules of high seas boarding, according to documents and interviews with Pacific fisheries officials. The fisheries officials said it was anticipated China will soon begin patrols in a "crowded" fisheries surveillance space. "Hosting the leaders, demonstrating their capabilities in terms of maritime operations, those kind of things are indications they want to step into that space," said Allan Rahari, director of fisheries operations for the Forum Fisheries Agency, in an interview with Reuters. The agency runs enforcement against illegal fishing for a group of 18 Pacific Island countries, with assistance from navy and air force patrols by Australia, the United States, France and New Zealand. The biggest fishing fleets in the Pacific, attracting the most infringement notices by inspectors, are Chinese and Taiwanese. But China is also the largest fisheries partner to some Pacific Island countries, and Rahari said agreements for Chinese coast guard patrols in coastal waters could be struck under security deals with these countries. China registered 26 coast guard vessels with the Western & Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) in 2024 for high seas boarding and inspections in a vast region where the U.S. and Australia have the biggest inspection fleets. The commission has not received a notification from China that it has conducted any inspection, but Chinese officials have become active in debate over the rules on boardings, WCPFC executive director Rhea Moss-Christian told Reuters. China last year called for a review of the guidelines, and in March, Chinese officials attended a video meeting about an Australian-led effort to strengthen voluntary rules, she said. WCPFC inspectors in international waters need to gain permission for each inspection from the suspected vessel's flag state before boarding. Rahari said it could be "very complicated" diplomatically if a Chinese coast guard vessel sought to board a Taiwanese fishing boat. Beijing does not recognise Taiwan as a separate country. Chinese officials and the Chinese Coast Guard did not respond to Reuters requests for comment. Australia declined to comment, while Taiwan and the U.S. Coast Guard did not respond to requests for comment. Foreign ministers from 10 Pacific Island nations visited the coastal Chinese city of Xiamen and toured Haixun 06, which can travel 18,500 km (11,470 miles or 10,000 nautical miles) or 60 days without resupply. Papua New Guinea (PNG) foreign minister Justin Tkatchenko said 10 Pacific Island ministers saw the Chinese coast guard demonstrate a maritime emergency drill, but told Reuters they did not discuss Pacific patrols. PNG is negotiating a new defence treaty with Australia, and struck a 2023 security deal with the United States allowing the U.S. Coast Guard to patrol PNG's 2.7 million square kilometre exclusive economic zone. Fiji said it had approved a new maritime security agreement with Australia this week. Nauru's government broadcaster posted photographs on social media of the Haixun 06 drill, which it said "reaffirmed the importance of maritime cooperation between China and Pacific Island nations". Under a security treaty struck in December, Nauru must notify Australia before the Chinese navy comes to port. The U.S. Coast Guard has maritime law enforcement agreements with a dozen Pacific Island nations allowing it to enter nations' exclusive economic zones, and increased its patrols last year. "The key considerations for China is stepping into that space without stepping on other partners toes, because that will then create conflicts within the region and that is something we don't want," Rahari said. Reuters previously reported the first U.S. Coast Guard patrol in Vanuatu's waters saw local officials board several Chinese fishing boats in 2024, finding infringements, which Beijing criticised. Since 2008, Chinese fishing vessels were issued with 158 infringements, or 46% of Chinese boardings by WCPFC inspectors including the U.S., France and Australia, WCPFC data shows. Taiwanese fishing boats were issued 233 infringements.

Australian engineer Robert Pether has been released from his Iraq jail cell more than four years after he was arbitrarily detained. Pether was working on a project to help build the new headquarters for the Central Bank of Iraq when he was detained in Baghdad in April 2021. He had flown in for a meeting with bank officials to resolve a dispute they were having with his engineering firm, CME Consulting, over the project. Pether was later sentenced and fined over allegations that his firm spent money that should have gone to an architect and a subcontractor. It also heard allegations that Pether and his Egyptian colleague's trials were compromised and that he had been subjected to torture-like practices. The body called for their immediate and unconditional release. After more than four years in prison, Pether has now been released. Pether's wife, Desree, welcomed the development and said her family were 'grateful to everyone who contributed to this happening'. But she also warned her husband remains trapped in Iraq due to a travel ban, and urgently needs medical care. 'He's unrecognisable,' she told Guardian Australia. 'So frail and weak. He needs urgent medical care and that's not possible in Iraq.' The foreign minister, Penny Wong, said the Australian government had raised the case with Iraqi authorities more than 200 times. 'I want to thank Australian officials for their tireless work on Mr Pether's case, including Australia's special envoy who travelled to Iraq in recent weeks to negotiate for this outcome,' she said. Pether also wrote of his daily torment about how he should break it to his children that he might not be coming home. How do you tell your children that you are proud of them, but will not be sharing the accolades (and pitfalls) of their lives with them?,' Pether wrote. 'And toughest of all, how do you tell your wife, who is very much the other half of you, that you will not be keeping the promise you made to grow old together?'

Plans to bring bare-knuckle boxing to Perth have been dealt a serious blow - and now, former Channel Seven personality turned Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas is leading calls for the sport to be permanently banned. The Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship [BKFC], co-owned by UFC icon Conor McGregor, was expected to stage its Australian debut in Perth this July. Instead, the WA Combat Sports Commission has declined the application, leaving organisers scrambling and critics relieved. Zempilas, once a mainstay of Seven's AFL and Olympic coverage, now serves as Leader of the Opposition and head of the WA Liberal Party. He's demanding the State Government take the next step and outlaw the sport altogether, arguing it has no place in Western Australia. 'It was very clear that a significant majority of Western Australians did not want this brutal sport to be coming to Perth,' Zempilas said. 'It should not have taken this long, and there are still lots of questions.' He urged the Combat Sports Commission, chaired by former Labor Minister Bob Kucera, to publicly explain why the permit was denied. 'We don't know what criteria was not met, or how the decision was reached,' he said. 'We don't know whether there were discussions between the Minister and the Commission, and it would appear the door is still open.' Zempilas said a full ban would be the only way to prevent future applications. 'That's what we want. Clearly that's what the people of Western Australia want.' 'It sets a bad example, there is very little demand.' 'And it took the long way and a confusing way to get there, but I'm pleased that the common sense decision was ultimately reached.' His stance has been echoed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who also voiced concerns earlier this week. Speaking to Triple M, Albanese said: 'A bit of common sense - you've got to look after people's health a bit and maybe save people from themselves.' He referred to the rising awareness of concussion and long-term brain damage in sport. 'I just think we've got to be much more conscious about health issues,' he said. Albanese mentioned a recent conversation with former rugby league great Mark Carroll about the long-term effects of concussion. 'It's a bit crazy,' the Prime Minister said, when asked directly about bare knuckle fighting. The Australian Medical Association WA has also taken aim at the proposed event. 'We have a domestic violence crisis,' said AMA WA President Michael Page. 'We have people sorting out their problems with their fists in Northbridge on Saturday night.' 'This is not the type of example our community needs. 'We don't need this type of race to the bottom with bloody violence.' The WA Government had faced pressure over the event's approval, particularly as Sports Minister Rita Saffioti had previously defended it. She argued it was difficult to justify banning bare-knuckle fighting while continuing to support UFC events for tourism purposes. 'I can't differentiate between this and UFC,' she said. 'Just because it's not my cup of tea, or the Premier's cup of tea, doesn't mean we have the right to say no.' Still, the application was ultimately rejected. A statement from the Combat Sports Commission confirmed the decision but offered no detailed explanation. 'After careful consideration, the Board was not satisfied the event met the required criteria,' it read. BKFC President David Feldman had previously insisted the show would go ahead, calling Australia 'perfect for showcasing BKFC.' Among the scheduled bouts was a heavyweight clash between former UFC fighter Ben Rothwell and Australian strongman Alex 'Godly Strong' Simon. Simon, who once tipped the scales at 181kg and has a background in powerlifting, has spoken openly about his time in prison. The co-main event would have featured Tasmania's 'Rowdy' Bec Rawlings, the competition's first-ever female champion. Rawlings was set to face off against Canadian fighter Jade Masson-Wong. The proposed matches were set to take place at RAC Arena on July 19. But with the permit denied and calls for a ban intensifying, the future of BKFC in Australia looks doubtful. Zempilas has called for a full explanation from the WA Government and a clear statement that the sport is unwelcome. 'The Premier and Sports Minister are still duty-bound to act,' he said.
