Govt to honour top-performing mines for best sustainability practices

(IBM), under the Ministry of Mines, will felicitate the nation's top-performing mines at a national-level ceremony on Monday. The event, to be held at the Rajasthan International Centre, aims to recognise mines that have demonstrated exceptional adherence to sustainable and responsible mining practices under the 'Star Rating' scheme.

is set to be the chief guest, with Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines Satish Chandra Dubey attending as guests of honour. Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Mines Sanjay Lohiya will also be present, an official statement confirmed on Sunday.
The felicitation ceremony will honour three mines that have achieved the prestigious 7-star rating and 95 mines that have secured a 5-star rating for their performance during the 2023-24 financial year.
The 'Star Rating of Mines' initiative, introduced in 2014-15, plays a crucial role in evaluating mining operations within a comprehensive Sustainable Development Framework. This scheme is designed to encourage responsible mining by actively promoting environmental protection, social welfare, and economic development in mining regions. The ultimate goal is to foster inclusive growth for both present and future generations.
Officials have lauded the programme's success, noting its significant traction within the mining community. The initiative has fostered a healthy competitive spirit among operators, motivating them to adopt and implement best practices.
The Ministry of Mines highlighted that this national recognition has led to tangible improvements in overall mine management, yielding benefits for both the industry and the local communities reliant on these operations.

FB friend from Japan dupes Powai businessman of ₹52 lakh in Bitcoin fraud
MUMBAI: A 65-year-old businessman from Powai lost ₹52 lakh after an allegedly Japanese woman he befriended online convinced him to invest in Bitcoins and duped him in a cybercrime fraud for a month. The West Cyber police had initially received his complaint, and as the defrauded amount was less than ₹1 crore, they forwarded it to the Andheri police station, which registered a case against the woman and her accomplices on Saturday. From the last week of June to July 17, the victim invested ₹ 52 lakh.(HT File Photo) According to the complaint, the businessman received a Facebook friend request from an unknown person in June. The profile had a woman's photo and displayed her employment with IBM in Hong Kong. Her soft-spoken manner on calls gained the complainant's trust, he said in the complaint. She told him she was currently working in an IBM office based in Hong Kong and that she would soon be joining the IBM Crypto trading platform in Japan as a manager. The complainant continued to talk with her for 10 more days about various subjects. She would tell him how investing in Bitcoin reaps huge profits and how it could benefit him. Though the complainant was initially reluctant, he was eventually convinced. He said he began investing money in Bitcoins through the bank accounts she provided. From the last week of June to July 17, he had invested ₹52 lakh. When he checked the application, it displayed ₹10.3 crore as his virtual bank account balance. Noticing huge returns, the 65-year-old wanted to, but could not invest more money in Bitcoins. So, he decided to withdraw the balance accumulated in his account. When he inquired about the withdrawal process, he was asked to pay a 30% tax first. Finding this suspicious, he discussed it with his relatives and realised he had been defrauded. The Andheri police on Saturday registered a case under sections 66 (d) (dishonestly receiving stolen computer resource or communication device) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and sections 318 (4) (cheating), 319 (2) (cheating by personation), 336 (2) and 336 (3) (forgery), 338 (forgery of valuable security documents), 340 (2) (using forged electronic document as genuine) and 61 (2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. 'We are trying to ascertain the identities of and trace the accused through the transactions made by the complainant,' said a police officer from Andheri police station.

Centre recognises IIT-H, NFTDC as Centres of Excellence
The Centre has allotted two Centres of Excellence (CoEs) out of the seven announced for critical minerals research across the country to Telangana, thanks to the efforts of Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy. In January this year, the Union Cabinet approved the 'National Critical Mineral Mission' with a budget of ₹16,300 crore, in addition to ₹18,000 crore to be mobilised from various PSUs. The mission aims to address the growing needs of sectors that rely on critical minerals. As part of the mission, the Ministry of Mines has recognised four IITs including IIT-H, and three Research & Development (R&D) centres including the Non-Ferrous Materials Technology Development Centre (NFTDC) in Hyderabad, as CoEs. They will function under the Ministry of Mines. These institutions will lead the research and technological development necessary to achieve the objectives of the National Critical Mineral Mission. The seven Centres of Excellence will receive funding under government research schemes. Additionally, ₹500 crore will be allocated for R&D and another ₹500 crore for international R&D support from global collaborations.

Auto unions threaten to halt services to Heerapura terminal over fare hike delay
Jaipur: Auto rickshaw unions have threatened to stop services to the Heerapura Bus Terminal if their demand for a fare hike is not met. In a letter to chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and deputy chief minister Prem Chand Bairwa, the unions warned that they would cease operations to the terminal unless the government approves the long-pending revision of fares. Speaking to TOI, Puneet Singh Issar, president of a city auto union, said, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) had been working on revising fares since early 2025 after 12 years. "Unfortunately, they slowed down the process suddenly. We were told it is still underway, but no time frame was given for announcing the hike," Issar said. Auto drivers said that it becomes very difficult to get a passenger from places like Bhankrota. Until and unless there is a hike in fare, it would be difficult for us to drop passengers at the Heerapura terminal. "The app-based services also offer very low fares, and most passengers prefer them as they can board an auto directly from their pick-up location. Many of us are also accepting passengers through these apps. Once the government increases the fare, we will switch back to operating on meters," said Kishan Lal Jangid, an auto driver. As per the draft fare proposal, the fare for the first kilometre is likely to increase from Rs15 to Rs30, while the rate for each subsequent kilometre may go up from Rs 9 to Rs 14. The new structure also proposes a 25% hike in night charges, a luggage fee of Rs10 per piece, and a waiting charge of Rs40. "For instance, the distance from Sindhi Camp to Heerapura is around 11 km, which means the fare would be at least Rs170 under the proposed rates. The RTO is considering implementing this substantial hike in one go," said a transport official.
