Kirsty Wark says Newsnight ‘leaner and meaner' as she receives Bafta fellowship

The Scottish journalist, who joined the BBC current affairs programme in 1993 as a presenter, left in July after more than 30 years.
She reflected on Newsnight's importance amid a 'world in turmoil' after picking up Bafta's highest television accolade on Sunday night.
Wark had previously revealed she had found out about the fellowship on February 3 – her 70th birthday.
Speaking at the winners' press conference, she said: 'If Newsnight wasn't there, they'd (the BBC) have to reinvent it.
'I would bet £500 right now that Newsnight is safe because we have a world in turmoil, and the news function of the BBC is terrific, but sometimes at the end of the night, all you want to do is sit down with a cup of cocoa, or a whisky, or a glass of wine and go, 'what just happened today?'
'Newsnight's role, I think has always been to analyse and work out what's been happening during the day and bring it to the audience with the best guests.
'And that's still happening, and they've taken the programme to 30 minutes.
'But look, it survived that. And it's, maybe you say it's leaner and meaner but actually you still need that programme at the end of the day to say, 'what just happened?''
In 2023 it was announced that Newsnight would be cut to a 30-minute programme as part of wider plans to make £500 million of savings at the BBC.
Wark, who has been honoured for her exceptional contribution to television, has interviewed a variety of prominent politicians and cultural figures throughout her career, including former prime minister Margaret Thatcher, Australian author Germaine Greer, Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker and The Libertines' Pete Doherty.
The journalist began her career at the corporation when she was accepted into the broadcaster's graduate trainee scheme in the 1970s.
She started at BBC Scotland as one of two graduates on a one-year radio research assistant contract and moved to TV after a spell on Radio 4's The World At One.
She worked as a producer on Reporting Scotland and went on to host the current affairs weekly Seven Days before she joined Newsnight as a presenter.
In 2001, she became a regular presenter of Newsnight Review and subsequently The Review Show.
The BBC axed long-running arts programme The Review Show in 2018, which had been on air in different formats for more than 20 years, and was also presented by Martha Kearney.
Wark has fronted documentaries on social media and taboos surrounding the menopause, and has also explored the stories of some of Scotland's most influential female pioneers in BBC series The Women Who Changed Modern Scotland.
In 2014, she was nominated for one of literature's less popular prizes – the Bad Sex In Fiction Award – for The Legacy Of Elizabeth Pringle, but lost out to The Age Of Magic by former Booker Prize winner Ben Okri.
The University of St Andrews has also awarded Wark an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters (DLitt), the highest postdoctoral degree awarded in the fields of arts, humanities and social sciences.
Previous recipients of the Bafta fellowship include Baroness Floella Benjamin, actress Meera Syal and comedians Sir Billy Connolly and Dawn French.

Joanna Lumley and Tulisa confirmed for Cheltenham Literature Festival 2025

Thought to be the world's oldest literature festival, the event, which was first held in 1949, features talks and discussions from a variety of authors, journalists and public figures. In October, The Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival will host more than 400 events in a programme that includes conversations with chat show host Graham Norton, activist and TV star Katie Piper, actor Sir Michael Palin, and BBC director-general Tim Davie. At the 10-day event, Absolutely Fabulous actress Dame Joanna, 79, will be interviewed by broadcaster Emma Freud about her forthcoming book, My Book Of Treasures: A Collection Of Favourite Writings, which is comprised of her favourite writings, thoughts and quotes, as written in her private notebooks. The veteran TV star, who appears in the latest series of Tim Burton's Netflix show Wednesday, has written a number of books, including 2011's Absolutely: A Memoir, which contains anecdotes from across her personal life and career. Contostavlos, of N-Dubz fame, will talk about her new book, Judgement, which details the highs and lows of her music career, including her collapsed drugs trial in 2014. The 37-year-old was arrested on suspicion of supplying class A drugs in 2013, but the charges were later dismissed after prosecution witness, 'Fake Sheikh' journalist Mazher Mahmood, was found guilty of tampering with evidence in the trial. A post shared by Tulisa Contostavlos (@tulisacontostavlos) Following the collapse of the trial Contostavlos said 'I have never dealt drugs and never been involved in taking or dealing cocaine' in a statement where she also accused Mahmood of a 'horrific and disgusting entrapment'. This year's fiction programme includes talks with Women's Prize for Fiction winner Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Atonement author Ian McEwan, children's author Dame Jacqueline Wilson and Kate Mosse, who will discuss the 20th anniversary of her historical fiction novel Labyrinth. In a talk with screenwriter Edward Docx, novelist Mick Herron will discuss Clown Town, the latest book in his Slough House series, which inspired the TV show Slow Horses, featuring Oscar-winning actor Sir Gary Oldman. Numerous stars from across the TV and film industry will gather for the festival, including Love Actually creator Richard Curtis, who will interview writer and comedian Ben Elton about his new autobiography and experience creating BBC sitcom Upstart Crow and writing for The Young Ones and Blackadder. Elsewhere, game show host Richard Osman will discuss the fifth novel in his Thursday Murder Club series, the first of which has been adapted for a film starring Dame Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan. Sharing moments from her new memoir Lush will be Gavin And Stacey star Joanna Page, whose book charts her journey from a small Welsh village to one of Britain's biggest sitcoms. In a separate event, her co-star Larry Lamb will present his debut novel All Wrapped Up, with his son and TV presenter George Lamb. Some of the talks will look at and dissect social issues, with Rizzle Kicks star Jordan Stephens questioning if masculinity is in crisis alongside writers Laura Bates and James Bloodworth. There will also be a live recording of Jane Garvey and Fi Glover's Times Radio show where they will be joined by model Penny Lancaster to discuss her forthcoming memoir, Someone Like Me, where she opens up about navigating fame and life with her husband Sir Rod Stewart. Among the other events is a talk with food writer Nigel Slater, who shares A Thousand Feasts, a memoir with anecdotes taken from his own notebooks. Former deputy prime minister Sir Nick Clegg, French chef Raymond Blanc, Olympic gold medallist Sir Bradley Wiggins, wildlife cameraman Hamza Yassin, World Wide Web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee and professor of genetics Dr Tim Spector are among the other public figures scheduled to appear. In a post on X, Skinner said: 'When the vice president of the USA invites you for a BBQ an beers, you say yes. Here is a pic of Me and Vice President @JDVance towards the end of the night after a few beers🍻 I'm overdressed in my suit, but when the VP invites you to a BBQ, you don't risk turning up in shorts an flip-flops😂 Cracking night in the beautiful English countryside with JD, his… — Thomas Skinner ⚒ (@iamtomskinner) August 12, 2025 'Unreal night with JD and his friends and family. He was a proper gent. Lots of laughs and some fantastic food. A brilliant night, one to tell the grand kids about.' In a later post he added: 'Here is a pic of me and vice president @JDVance towards the end of the night after a few beers. 'I'm overdressed in my suit, but when the VP invites you to a BBQ, you don't risk turning up in shorts an flip-flops. 'Cracking night in the beautiful English countryside with JD, his friends and family. Once in a lifetime. Bosh.' Mr Vance has previously shown support for Skinner on X, after the star claimed he had received 'death threats' and 'vile comments about my children', following a series of posts claiming 'something's gone wrong' in the UK, and saying 'there is nothing wrong with being proud of where you're from'. Following the post complaining about alleged abuse, Mr Vance replied with a picture of a cartoon character and a message that read: 'Hang in there, my friend. Remember that 90 percent of people attacking your family look like this.' Hang in there, my friend. Remember that 90 percent of people attacking your family look like this: — JD Vance (@JDVance) July 30, 2025 In other posts, Skinner had said that it was 'not far-right' to be 'flying your flag and loving your country', and complained that 'it ain't safe out there anymore' in London, claiming the city was 'hostile' and 'tense'. Mr Vance's meeting with Skinner came after he joined foreign secretary David Lammy at his Chevening country estate last week. On The Apprentice, Skinner was fired by Lord Alan Sugar in week nine during the show's 15th series in 2019.
