Indian-origin, Democratic Mayoral frontrunner
Zohran Mamdani
on Monday reacted to the Midtown Manhattan office shooting from Uganda saying he was "heartbroken" by the deadly incident.
Sharing a post on X Mamdani said, "I'm heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in midtown and I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer in critical condition in my thoughts.
"
"Grateful for all of our first responders on the ground," he added.
Mamdani is currently in Uganda, celebrating his wedding at a heavily guarded private estate in the upscale Buziga Hill area near Kampala.
A mass shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office tower on Monday evening left five people dead, including a New York City police officer, and the suspect, with a sixth victim critically injured.
The suspected gunman, identified as Shane Tamura from Las Vegas died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.
Mayor Eric Adams called the attack a "senseless act of violence" and said officials are still working to understand the motive. "We lost four souls to another act of senseless violence," Adams said at a late-night briefing, excluding the gunman from the death toll.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed Tamura had a "documented mental health history," but no clear motive has been established yet. "We are working to understand why he targeted this particular location," she added.
The shooting unfolded at 345 Park Avenue, a prominent high-rise that houses major institutions including Blackstone, the National Football League, and the Irish Consulate.
Surveillance footage showed Tamura pulling up in a double-parked black BMW, stepping out with an M-4-style rifle, and walking into the building.
According to Tisch, Tamura immediately opened fire at the entrance, shooting a uniformed officer before turning the weapon on others inside.
A woman who tried to flee was gunned down, followed by a security guard behind a desk and another man in the lobby.
Tamura was armed with a .223-caliber Palmetto State Armory AR-15-style assault rifle. Police later found a revolver, ammunition, and extra magazines in his vehicle.
The shooting took place in a busy part of Midtown Manhattan, just north of Grand Central Terminal and close to St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Local television footage showed people evacuating the office building with their hands raised. The building, located on Park Avenue, houses major firms including Blackstone and the Irish Consulate.

'Arrest Mohan Bhagwat': Ex-ATS Officer Drops Bombshell On Fake Saffron Terror Plot | Malegaon Blast In a staggering twist, a retired ATS officer has shaken the political landscape by claiming he was instructed to arrest RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat during the 2008 Malegaon blast probe. Speaking after the acquittal of all accused, including BJP MP Pragya Thakur, ex-Inspector Mehiboob Mujawar alleged that the saffron terror narrative was a fabrication, driven by political pressure. He described the directives as "horrific" and claims he refused to follow them, leading to his career's destruction via a false case. His allegations bring the focus sharply back to the credibility of terror investigations under UPA, and raise serious questions about the weaponisation of law enforcement. Opposition parties are now demanding answers, warning that faith in national security agencies is at risk. With claims of planted evidence, suppressed truths, and institutional vendetta, this case has reignited the saffron vs secular firestorm in Indian politics, and it's far from over.#malegaonblastcase, #mohanbhagwat, #mehiboobmujawar, #rsschiefcontroversy, #saffronterordebate, #pragyasinghthakur, #ltcolpurohit, #niacourtverdict, #faketerrorcharges, #atsinvestigation, #maharashtraats, #politicalvendetta, #antirssnarrative, #bjpvscongress, #indianjudiciary, #falseterrorcases, #nationalinvestigationagency, #indianpolitics, #judicialacquittal, #malegaoncaseacquittal, #hindutvanarrative, #2008malegaonblast #breakingnews #trending #bharat #toi #toibharat #indianews 2.8K views | 1 day ago

Bizman arrested for Rs34cr GST Scam

Nagpur: The investigation branch of the Maharashtra State GST Department in Nagpur arrested one Mahesh Keshwani, proprietor of M/s K&K Brothers, for allegedly availing and passing fraudulent Input Tax Credit (ITC) worth Rs33.93 crore. The firm, registered under the MGST Act 2017, was found claiming ITC without actual procurement or movement of goods, sourcing credits from registration-cancelled suppliers. A recent investigation at the firm's Jaripatka office uncovered incriminating evidence, including system reports, indicating involvement in a larger network issuing fake invoices to facilitate tax evasion. Following his arrest, Keshwani was remanded to judicial custody until August 14 by the magistrate. The operation, part of a special drive against fake invoicing, was led by assistant commissioner Ramesh Dalvi under the guidance of senior officials, including additional commissioner Tejrao Pacharne. CM unveils T sports policy, says will bring youth back to ground

Hyderabad: In a big fillip to the sport in the state, chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday unveiled the sports policy, which he said would put the youth on the right track. The CM felt the new sports policy would bring back the sporting glory the city enjoyed in the past. "Hyderabad has a rich history of sports. Nine of the Indian football team that finished fourth in the 1954 Olympics were from Hyderabad. But the state lost track later and the sport was neglected in the last 10-15 years without proper policy. The youth, who played a crucial part in achieving a separate state, are now addicted to drugs. We plan to bring them back to the grounds with the new policy," Revanth Reddy said, addressing the sporting fraternity at the 1st Telangana Sports Conclave at HICC, Izzatnagar. He also sounded a warning that the state has declared a war on drug mafia and no one would be spared in this regard. Revanth said the "sports policy will not be a mere paper as the govt is dedicated to implement it to the letter and will go the distance in supporting athletes to achieve their dreams". "Our govt is committed to promoting sports. We have shown our commitment by giving Group I posts and plots to cricketer Mohammed Siraj and boxer Nikhat Zareen. Our govt policy is clear. We have formed committees with former athletes and administrators. There will be no influence from the govt," he added. He further revealed that they offered to host Khelo India games and also plan to hold two disciplines if India gets to host the 2036 Olympics. "We will have a dedicated sports university and sports academy. Our aim is to see India as a sporting nation and, as a part of our Telangana Rising Vision 2047, a chapter will be dedicated to sports. There was no budget for sports till now. We will have dedicated budget for the betterment of the sport," he added. MoUs with foreign universities During the one-day conclave, the state govt signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with two foreign universities — Korea National Sports University in Seoul, South Korea, and Loughborough University based in Loughborough and London. The proposed sports university, to be run from Gachibowli for now, would share academic knowledge, curriculum, coaches training programmes, academic research and project collaboration. The govt has also signed MoUs with Olympic bronze medal winning shooter Gagan Narang's Gun For Glory, Abhinav Bindra's Sports Academy and FIFA to establish a FIFA Talent Academy in the state. They also signed MoUs with Anil Kumble's Tenvic, which will help them scout talent in 1,000 residential schools with 50 of them being centres of excellence (CoEs), Olympic Values Education Programme and Aspire for Her. Narang, Bindra and Pullela Gopichand would also conduct shooting, sports science and badminton mentorship programmes respectively. Incentives to athletes The CM also handed over cash incentives to athletes who had done the state proud by winning medals. Athlete Agasara Nandini, who won a gold in heptathlon at the 26th Asian athletics championship in South Korea received Rs 5 lakh, while gymnast Nishika Agarwal, who won a bronze in vault event, was rewarded with Rs 3 lakh. Differently-abled shooter Dhanush Srikanth was given a cheque for Rs 10 lakh for winning two gold medals in men and mixed team event at the World Deaf shooting championships last year. Goalball athletes Pavan Kalyan, P Sai Teja and coach G Shiva Kumar were given Rs 4.8 lakh. Panel to oversee Sports University Special chief secretary, sports, Jayesh Ranjan revealed that "the sports policy is inclusive, with focus on grassroots and schools to identify the talent and nurture it through proper system". Around 50 residential schools will have a centre of excellence (CoE) with top-class coaches and athletes would be provided with a proper ecosystem. To oversee the whole process and run the world-class sports academy, a governing council with 15 prominent personalities has been formed. With Sanjeev Goenka as chairman and Upasana Kamineni as the co-chairperson, the panel would have the likes of BV Papa Rao, Kapil Dev, Abhinav Bindra, Pullela Gopichand, Baichung Bhutia, Ravikanth Reddy, Vita Dani, Kavya Maran and C Shashidhar, with Jayesh Ranjan and Sports Authority of Telangana chairman Shiva Sena Reddy as govt representatives.
