'I embarrassed Conor McGregor - but things could be about to change for him'

Khabib Nurmagomedov believes Conor McGregor can make a major life transformation, almost seven years after "humbling" his rival at UFC 229.
McGregor, 37, once ruled mixed martial arts as a two-weight UFC champion. Four years have passed since his last octagon appearance, enduring a fractured leg during his loss to Dustin Poirier in July 2021.
During his time away from mixed martial arts, McGregor's athletic achievements have been overtaken by courtroom disputes. The Dublin fighter recently failed in his appeal against a civil court decision that he sexually assaulted a woman in 2018. Former UFC lightweight champion Nurmagomedov previously engaged in a high-profile rivalry with McGregor, yet remains optimistic that his long-standing rival can stage a comeback.
"I don't want to mention his name," Nurmagomedov told the Irish Independent. "This is punishment, this is punishment. And he keeps doing this, keeps doing this, keeps doing this. Everything that happened.
"But the most beautiful part of this [is] Allah always gives for us – it doesn't matter, anybody, everybody – a chance to come back. Always, in this world, a chance to come back.
"This is the most beautiful thing. It doesn't matter how you're bad, Allah is going to give you a chance to always come back. I think he has a chance, and he has to change the way how he's living. "Why am I talking about this? If he's going to change, he can change with him so many lives, too. And that's why I wish him to change himself."
Nurmagomedov's encouraging remarks about McGregor's potential for transformation starkly contrast the fighter's position during their bitter 2018 rivalry. In the lead-up to their championship clash, McGregor threw a dolly at a coach transporting Nurmagomedov and fellow UFC competitors. The Dubliner was subsequently required to complete five days of community service and attend anger management sessions.
When asked about McGregor before their fight, Nurmagomedov stated: "I'm going to change his face. I'm going to smash him. I want to make him humble. I want to show people his weakness. I want to make him give up. I want to embarrass him."
Nurmagomedov delivered on his promise by submitting McGregor and successfully defending his lightweight championship. Nevertheless, the animosity between both camps persisted following the bout, culminating in a post-fight brawl. Defeating McGregor failed to alter Nurmagomedov's sentiments towards his rival at that time. "I told you I was going to smash your boy. I humbled him," he declared following his victory.
Nurmagomedov's recent remarks signal a dramatic shift in perspective from the UFC legend, who stepped away from competition as the unbeaten lightweight titleholder with a flawless 29-0 record in 2020. It seems the 36-year-old's attitude towards McGregor has mellowed considerably during his absence from the octagon.
McGregor has voiced ambitions of pursuing a political path and revealed his aspiration to become Irish President. However, he remains hopeful of orchestrating a UFC return.
McGregor has recently rejoined the UFC's drug-testing pool and expressed his wish to compete at a potential event hosted at the White House. The 37-year-old was slated to fight Michael Chandler last year, but the bout was called off due to injury.

Hallgrimsson will be thrilled with Parrott comments as scoring run continues

Troy Parrott has taken his tally so far this season to seven goals in just four appearances - thanks to his latest brace. The on-fire Ireland striker netted twice for the third game in a row, as AZ Alkmaar secured a 4-1 opening day win in the Eredivisie against Groningen on Sunday. Parrott won and then converted a penalty to give Alkmaar a 2-0 lead with just 18 minutes on the clock, and he rounded off the scoring in the 87th minute with a delightful curler from 16 yards, which sailed into the top right hand corner. Incredibly, Parrott's scoring feats so far this season have seen him net a goal every 42 minutes. He has scored in each of AZ's four games to date, and Sunday was his first 90-minute run-out. He has five goals so far from the Dutch side's three Europa Conference League games - one away to Ilves of Finland and two in the return leg, and another two in last Thursday's 3-0 win against Vaduz of Liechtenstein. Reacting to his latest double, his comments will be music to the ears of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson ahead of Ireland's opening World Cup qualifiers next month at home to Hungary and away to Armenia. The Dubliner spoke of his confidence in front of goal, and reacted to his manager finally handing him a full 90 minutes. 'It was really nice,' he told Dutch TV after the Groningen win. 'In the last few games, I think I've played sixty or seventy minutes. 'But it's something that I've wanted to do, to play more minutes. It gives me an opportunity to do better and score more goals. I'm happy the trainer left me on and it paid off in the end.' As for his second goal, which was teed up by a fine assist from Mateo Chavez, the former Belvedere and Tottenham prospect said: 'It was a great pass from Mateo, I saw some space opening up in front of me, so it's a good finish. 'But I'm feeling really good, I'm feeling really confident in front of goal, so it doesn't come as so much of a surprise, because I'm feeling good right now.' Parrott's minutes and goals in 2025/26 Ilves 4-3 AZ ALKMAAR (73 minutes/1 goal) AZ ALKMAAR 5-0 Ilves (58 minutes/2 goals) AZ ALKMAAR 3-0 Vaduz (76 minutes/2 goals) AZ ALKMAAR 4-1 Groningen (90 minutes/2 goals) Total: 297 minutes/7 goals Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email .

'Feels like the beginning': Dubliner Mark McNamee makes Green Bay Packers debut

Mark McNamee played in his first game for the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night, a 30-10 pre-season defeat to the New York Jets. Remarkably, the Dubliner did so before taking part in his first official practice with the Packers. McNamee signed a contract with the team last month to be their International Player Pathway Program designee but his arrival in Wisconsin was delayed as he awaited a visa. He only received the green light for his visa earlier this week and arrived in the States late on Friday night. The 25-year-old, who was a goalkeeper with Ballyboden St Enda's, took all three kick-offs for the Packers. He is the second Irish player on their roster, joining Wicklow-born Daniel Whelan who took six punts in Saturday's game. "It's only really sinking in now," McNamee said. "I knew I had a job to do, so that was kind of my focus. I wasn't really thinking about the occasion at all, but it's unbelievable. Obviously disappointed in the result first and foremost, but to actually have suited up and played in the NFL is incredible and feels like it's the beginning, which is definitely a good moment for me and my family." Derry native Jude McAtamney, who is on the New York Giants' roster, featured in his side's 34-25 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. The Swatragh man kicked a 43-yard field goal and also an extra point.
