Madhushree recalls collaborating with AR Rahman, Javed Akhtar for Kisna: ‘Your romance is with your art, your voice'

Composer AR Rahman has often talked about having weird working schedules and how he doesn't even feel the need for extra friends, as he is content with his work. Singer Madhushree, who has collaborated with Rahman on films like Kisna (2005) and Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu (2022), echoed these sentiments in a recent interview, sharing her own experience working with the musical maestro.
In an interview with O2 India, Madhushree talked about the time when she recorded the song 'Hum Mile Na Mile' from the film Kisna and how she had to jump through several hoops to get it done. She shared, 'I was in my house in Andheri and got a call from Rahman's assistant who told me that I needed to get to the Taj hotel as soon as possible. I told her that it will take me at least 2-3 hours before I can get there, but she insisted that I get there right now. So I got into the local train, took a cab after that, and reached the hotel within an hour to work with him.'

The singer added that her beautiful experience of working on that song did not end there, as she had quite an experience while finally recording the final cut of that song with Subhash Ghai and Javed Akhtar in the studio. 'I went to the studio, and I read the lyrics, and I usually always ask what the song means before singing. Javed sir asked me, 'Madhushree, what do you love the most?' I said, 'My music.' He said, 'I know it is a romantic song, but your romance is with your art, your voice. Sing this, keeping that in mind.' And that note really stuck with me.'
Madhushree added that initially Hariharan was supposed to sing the song with her, but he was unavailable, and Udit Narayan stepped in. The singer admitted that she wanted to do another take of the song and kept pleading her case for the coming days until she got a call back during the most unusual time. 'I normally don't fast, but I had decided to keep one for Navratra that year. On the last day of the fast, Rahman told me that he was doing the final mixing for the song and I could come in and re-take the part I wanted to. Even though I felt weak and not up to the mark, I went, and the moment I started singing, I forgot all about my hunger and fast.'
Kisna was directed by Subhash Ghai, and starred Vivek Oberoi, Isha Sharwani and Antonia Bernath in the lead roles. AR Rahman and Ismail Darbar both worked on the music for the film.

Kisna Director Subhash Ghai Opens Up On Making Of ‘Woh Kisna Hai': 'Sukhwinder Brought It Alive'

Last Updated: On Janmashtami 2025, Subhash Ghai recalls the making of Woh Kisna Hai from Kisna. The director reveals it was recorded in a single day. On the occasion of Janmashtami, filmmaker Subhash Ghai looked back on one of the most cherished musical moments of his career — the creation of Woh Kisna Hai from his 2005 directorial Kisna: The Warrior Poet. Speaking to HT City, the veteran director revealed that the song, which remains etched in the memory of music lovers even today, was recorded in just a single day. 'I have great memories behind the song of Kisna in 2003 where an Indian boy rescues an English girl during riots in 1947. During this journey, he shows how Hindu people celebrate Krishna Janmashtami as a colorful festival. It was beautifully choreographed by Saroj Khan," Ghai recalled with fondness. The filmmaker emphasized how Woh Kisna Hai was not just a musical interlude but an integral part of the film's storytelling. 'The song describes the romantic side of Lord Krishna and Sukhwinder sang it in his dancing mood in the recording room. He even became the power of the song that exists even till today," he said, praising singer Sukhwinder Singh's unmatched energy that brought the track to life. Composed by Ismail Darbar and penned by Javed Akhtar, the song blended devotional essence with cinematic grandeur, making it one of the highlights of the film. The vibrant picturisation, led by the late Saroj Khan, captured the festive fervor of Janmashtami, where colors, dance, and spirituality merged seamlessly on screen. Though Kisna, starring Vivek Oberoi, Isha Sharvani, and English actress Antonia Bernath, did not perform well at the box office, it continues to be remembered for its soulful soundtrack. Songs like Woh Kisna Hai still find resonance during Janmashtami celebrations, nearly two decades after their release. Looking back, Ghai admits that while the film may not have lived up to commercial expectations, the music gave it a timeless legacy. 'That song was more than just part of the film — it was a celebration in itself. Even today, when people hum it, it feels like Lord Krishna's presence has been evoked," he reflected. As Janmashtami 2025 is observed across the country, Woh Kisna Hai stands as a reminder of how music can transcend box office results and find a permanent home in people's hearts. Midnight flag-hoisting to patriotic songs: Bengaluru soaks in the I-Day spirit

BENGALURU: Bengaluru is showing no signs of slowing down when it comes to patriotism — Tricolours fluttered across the city, with schools dancing to 'Des Rangeela', a popular track from 2006 Bollywood flick 'Fanaa', and homes distributing sweets paired with heartfelt speeches on Friday. The roads saw lines of autorickshaws with big national flags fastened to them, driving around the city. While Tiranga yatras, NCC cadets, and school marching contingents added to the patriotic passion, maestro AR Rahman's 'Vande Mataram' playing loud and proud from school speakers reminded one of the respect and reverence deeply felt for the nation. The celebrations began as early as midnight, with people gathering for traditional midnight Tricolour-hoisting ceremonies. Across the city, officials conducted flag-hoisting events and delivered brief speeches, recalling the sacrifices of freedom fighters. At the MG Railway Colony, DRM Ashutosh Kumar Singh hoisted the national flag and inspected the RPF and student parade. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah laid a wreath at the statue of Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna, while at Bharat Vidya Sansthan, Colonel MS Khaira (retd) and president Nirmal Kumar addressed students, reminding them that freedom comes with responsibility. Educational institutions across the city also marked the day with enthusiasm. At IIIT-B, students, faculty and staff took part in cultural programmes and renewed their commitment through the 'Panch Pran' oath. Cultural organisations and public art spaces also joined in the celebrations, hosting dance and music performances featuring young artists. Besides, several corporate firms lit up their offices in shades of the Tricolour, and are organising week-long activities to mark the occasion.
