Inside Laura Dahlmeier's Family: A glimpse into the life of the Olympic champion
The world was struck with grief upon learning that Laura Dahlmeier, the celebrated German biathlon champion, tragically passed away at the age of 31 in a mountaineering accident in Pakistan's Karakoram mountains on July 28, 2025. Known for her remarkable achievements in biathlon, including two Olympic gold medals and seven world championships, Dahlmeier's legacy extends beyond her athletic prowess to her close-knit family and personal passions. Growing Up in Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Laura Dahlmeier was born and raised in the picturesque Bavarian ski town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a place known for its rich winter sports culture. This alpine environment played a significant role in shaping her career, as she began competing in biathlon events at the tender age of nine. Her parents, Andreas and Susi Dahlmeier, were instrumental in nurturing her passion for sports and the outdoors. Growing up in the German Alps, Laura developed a love for both skiing and mountaineering, which would later define her post-retirement pursuits. The Dahlmeier Family
Laura's parents, Andreas and Susi Dahlmeier, provided a strong foundation for her success. Andreas Dahlmeier, her father, is the owner of a furniture store called 'Dahlmeier Einrichtungshaus,' as noted on Laura's official website. While little is publicly known about Susi Dahlmeier's professional life, it is evident that both parents played a vital role in fostering Laura's discipline and dedication. Their support was crucial as Laura rose through the ranks of biathlon, eventually becoming a global icon in the sport.
Details about Laura's extended family or siblings are not widely available, reflecting her preference for keeping her personal life private. Similarly, no public information exists regarding romantic relationships, suggesting that Laura focused much of her energy on her athletic career and later her passion for mountaineering. Her family's support allowed her to pursue her dreams with unwavering commitment, from her early days in Garmisch-Partenkirchen to her historic achievements on the world stage. A Tragic Loss at 31
Laura Dahlmeier's untimely death occurred during a climbing expedition on Laila Peak, where she was caught in a rockfall at approximately 5,700 meters. Despite rescue efforts, the remote location and harsh weather conditions prevented her recovery, and her passing was confirmed on July 30, 2025. Her management company noted that Dahlmeier had expressed her wish for her body to remain in the mountains, a testament to her deep connection with nature. As the world mourns this extraordinary athlete, we reflect on the family that supported her remarkable journey.

Trump plans White House task force on security for the 2028 L.A. Olympics
WASHINGTON — President Trump will order the establishment of a White House task force on Tuesday focused on security for the Olympics Games in Los Angeles in 2028. Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said the president plans on creating the task force by executive order on Tuesday, telling The Times that Trump 'considers it a great honor to oversee this global sporting spectacle.' 'During his first term, President Trump was instrumental in securing America's bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles,' Leavitt said. 'Sports is one of President Trump's greatest passions, and his athletic expertise, combined with his unmatched hospitality experience will make these Olympic events the most exciting and memorable in history.' The executive order follows on Trump's signature legislation, referred to by the president as the 'big beautiful bill,' securing $1 billion for security, planning and other costs for the L.A. Games. Planning for the games is being led by the Los Angeles Organizing Committee for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, or LA28, a privately funded non-profit organization. Casey Wasserman, chairperson and president of LA28, thanked the Trump administration in a statement 'for their leadership and unwavering support as we prepare to deliver the largest and most ambitious Olympic and Paralympic Games ever hosted in the United States.' 'Since we secured this historic opportunity in 2017, President Trump has consistently recognized the magnitude of our responsibility in welcoming the world to Los Angeles,' Wasserman said. 'The creation of this task force marks an important step forward in our planning efforts and reflects our shared commitment to delivering not just the biggest, but the greatest Games the world has ever seen in the summer of 2028.'

The 2025 season was not the year German track and field athlete Alica Schmidt envisioned, 'but it was definitely the one' she needed. Reflecting on the past season of competitions, Schmidt — who has been dubbed the 'world's sexiest athlete' over the years — spoke about the hurdles she encountered, including a bout with COVID-19 in the lead up to this past weekend's German Championships. 'This season really put me to the test this year. Tough races, lots of lessons, and a whole lot of growth. It wasn't the season I was hoping for, but it was definitely the one I needed,' Schmidt began on Instagram. 4 Alica Schmidt reflected on the past season and lessons learned in a new Instagram post. Instagram 'Unfortunately I caught Covid a few days before Nationals, so I wasn't able to show up at my best, definitely frustrating.' Schmidt, who competed in Saturday's 800-meter event but failed to qualify for the final, then touched upon the greatest lessons learned as she enters the latter half of the year. 'This year is about committing, learning, challenging and accepting,' she penned. 'Everything I need to learn on how to tackle the 800m.' 4 The track and field competitor, who has been dubbed the 'world's sexiest athlete,' battled COVID in the lead-up to the German Championships. Instagram Schmidt finished first in an 800-meter heat during the German Indoor Championships in February but placed fourth in the final. She also placed first as part of the SCC Berlin squad in a second final heat of the women's 4×200-meter relay short track at the German Indoor Championships. 'The past weeks were an emotional rollercoaster and I was able to learn a lot. As an athlete I am still not where I want to be and maybe I will never be. But the one thing that is for sure: I will never stop trying and figuring out ways to improve. I love taking you guys with me on this journey and hope to inspire young athletes and show how amazing this sport can be!'

Newcastle United make Malick Thiaw enquiry
Newcastle United have enquired about AC Milan's Malick Thiaw. Thiaw has been on the Magpies' radar for the past two years and has emerged as a target once again this summer as Newcastle gear up for another campaign of European football. Newcastle scouts reportedly watched the 23-year-old during Milan's pre-season tour in Hong Kong, where he impressed in a 4-2 triumph over Premier League champions Liverpool. The Magpies were strongly linked with Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi last summer, albeit to no avail. They are still in the market for defensive reinforcements. Thiaw was wanted by Como earlier this summer. Despite Milan accepting an offer, the German opted against a move. This has opened the door for Newcastle to lure Thiaw to St James' Park. Thiaw would offer Newcastle versatility along with youth and experience. While he is primarily a centre-back, he can also fill in as a right-back or defensive midfielder. He would form a robust partnership with Sven Botman, which would be capable of competing domestically and in Europe. Newcastle have other players on their defensive wishlist, including Atalanta's Giorgio Scalvini and Roma's Eva Ndicka. They could also reignite their interest in Guehi as he enters the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park.
