Amazon shoppers risk bank-emptying nightmare in days as expert reveals 5 ‘red flags' that mean you could lose £100s

EXPERTS have revealed the 5 "red flags" to look out for in a bid to protect online shoppers from scams, as millions gear up for Amazon Prime Day.
New research conducted by McAfee shows the users most at risk and how to stay safe online as scams become increasingly difficult to spot.

Scams becoming harder to spot
According to Abhishek Karnik, the Head of Threat Research at McAfee: "As inflation and tariffs push more people to hunt for deals, scammers are using generative AI to craft scams that are more polished, personal, and persuasive.
"From retailer impersonations to hyper-realistic delivery scams, these threats are getting harder to spot."
Experts reveal 5 'red flags'
In light of this new growing threat, the cyber security company has shared five red flags to watch out for to help users stay safe online:
Urgent language demanding immediate action ("Your account will be closed in 24 hours!").
Requests for payment via gift cards, wire transfers or cash.
Claims that you need to "verify" or "legalise" your money.
Transfers to "goverment agencies" during the same call.
Pressure to keep the call secret or not hang up.
McAfee also emphasised that Amazon will never call you about suspicious account activity or unauthorised purchases.
Further advice includes, using Amazon's Message Centre, and never giving personal information, passwords, or payment details over the phone.
Mr Karnik added: "The good news is that the tools to fight back are getting smarter too.
"The best way to stay safe is to pause before you click, trust your instincts, and use AI-powered protection like McAfee's Scam Detector to stay one step ahead."
On how to protect your shopping experience, McAfee advised that you enable two-factor authentication on your Amazon account, use strong and unique passwords, and only shop on secure websites.
It also suggests you monitor your bank and credit card statements regularly, never click on suspicious emails, and, most importantly, trust your gut.

McAfee identified older adults as particularly at risk, while platforms like TikTok shop and Instagram Shopping are fast becoming hot spots for scam exposure.
Scammers strike again
Earlier this year, Amazon shoppers were also advised to watch out for dangerous scams and "unexpected" attacks that could empty bank accounts.
In March, Amazon released an official list of the four "common scam trends" that users needed to look out for, ahead of its spring sale.
Among the list, were prime membership scams whereby cybercriminals attempted to convince shoppers that they needed to reinstate their membership.
How to protect yourself from scams
BY keeping these tips in mind, you can avoid getting caught up in a scam:
Firstly, remember that if something seems too good to be true, it normally is.
Check brands are "verified" on Facebook and Twitter pages - this means the company will have a blue tick on its profile.
Look for grammatical and spelling errors; fraudsters are notoriously bad at writing proper English. If you receive a message from a 'friend' informing you of a freebie, consider whether it's written in your friend's normal style.
If you're invited to click on a URL, hover over the link to see the address it will take you to – does it look genuine?
To be on the really safe side, don't click on unsolicited links in messages, even if they appear to come from a trusted contact.
Be careful when opening email attachments too. Fraudsters are increasingly attaching files, usually PDFs or spreadsheets, which contain dangerous malware.
If you receive a suspicious message then report it to the company, block the sender and delete it.

Los Angeles-based Schall Law Firm says it is investigating whether Six Flags issued false or misleading statements or failed to disclose information pertinent to investors. The lawsuit comes as the amusement park announced its second-quarter financial results earlier this month, which included a devastating $100 million net loss and the news that CEO Richard Zimmerman would step down by the end of the year. Shares were also down 47 percent year to date, according to Morning Brew. While the park's profits plummeted, Six Flags also reported a seven-figure drop in visitors. The park also saw 1.4 million fewer visitors during the second quarter. Despite the North Carolina-based park's losses this year, its competitors, including Disney and Universal, weren't facing similar struggles. Revenue at Disney's domestic parks rose 10 percent year over year in its most recent quarter, and Universal recently opened its $7 billion Epic Universe theme park, according to Morning Brew. Six Flags has made some efforts to turn its financial troubles around, including announcing it would close a park in Maryland and sell the land. Even still, the company recently laid off hundreds of full-time staff following its 2024 acquisition of Cedar Fair, the entertainment company responsible for Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio. Schall Law Firm, a national shareholder rights litigation firm, is inviting investors of Six Flags Entertainment Corporation to join the lawsuit. Six Flags did not immediately return The Independent's request for comment on the case, but recently blamed the decrease in visitors on several parks removing winter events and adverse summer weather. "July was a turning point as weather normalized and guests had a chance to experience our new rides and other attractions," a Six Flags spokesperson told Chron. "We're seeing a surge in demand for our parks, and sales of season passes and memberships are climbing fast. While we know we have ground to make up from a tough May and June, these results send a clear message: when the gates are open and the product is strong, people will visit."

With Donald Trump's 'big, beautiful bill' set to alter how families and students finance higher education starting in July 2026, a new survey suggests the majority of college students expect to be affected by the bill. A US News & World Report surveyed nearly 1,200 college students, with most responders saying the changes will affect them. When asked about the law's broader effects, 61% of students said they would personally feel its impact, while 20% said they would not and 19% responded 'I don't know.' About a third (32%) of students anticipate being affected by the removal of repayment options such as the Save Plan, a 2023 income-driven repayment plan for student debt implemented by former president Joe Biden. Trump's bill sets new caps on borrowing and reduces the repayment plan options available for federal student loan borrowers who take out loans beginning in the summer of next year. It also eliminates Grad Plus loans for graduate and professional students after that date. Awareness of the scope of the incoming changes varies among those surveyed. Just 20% of students say they fully grasp the upcoming policy shift, while 19% admit they don't understand it at all. Another 39% say they understand somewhat, and 22% are unsure how the new rules will apply to them. A slight majority of students (51%) oppose all of the bill's student loan changes. Even when asked about individual provisions, support remains weak, with only around one in five approving of borrowing caps or the elimination of certain income-driven repayment plans. For many, the new rules are causing them to reconsider their educational path. According to the survey, 35% are thinking about cutting back on their studies, 32% about changing degrees, 31% about completing school abroad, and 26% about enlisting in the military for financial support. First-generation students are even more likely to consider reducing their schooling (45%) or changing majors (44%), an outcome possibly also related to Trump's rescinding of longstanding protections against immigration raids on school campuses, as data shows 47% of first-generation students in the US are also first-generation immigrants. Some students shared their thoughts directly: 'I'm thinking about not finishing law school,' one said. Another explained: 'I wanted to go to medical school, but now I won't.' One summed it up simply: 'Honestly, I'm cooked.' Graduate and professional students are expected to feel the greatest impact, given the new borrowing limits and the loss of Grad Plus loans. Currently, students in programs such as law or medicine can borrow up to $138,500 over the course of their education, including undergraduate borrowing. Other graduate students have borrowing limits between $81,000 and $107,500, depending on what they took out as undergrads. The new legislation will cap borrowing for master's and academic doctoral degree programs at $20,500 per year and $100,000 in total. Professional practice doctoral degrees, such as medicine and law, will have higher limits of $50,000 per year and $200,000 in total. Although these new limits are technically higher than current caps, students needing more than that amount will find their options have shrunk. Currently, Grad Plus loans allow graduate students to borrow up to the full cost of attendance. While they carry higher interest rates than direct loans, they offer important benefits compared to private loans, such as fixed rates and access to income-driven repayment plans.

Orlando Pride have made Lizbeth Ovalle the most expensive signing in women's football history by signing the Mexico winger from Tigres UANL in a deal worth $1.5m (£1.1m).
