Anthony Carrigan ( Barry , Death of a Unicorn ) is set to play the villain Metamorpho in James Gunn's DC movie, Superman . The comic book character is known to be able to transmute his body into a wide variety of elemental compounds and form them at will.
He will work alongside Lex Luthor in the film to stop Superman, but Carrigan went into the role knowing that even a villain has a backstory and full personality.
In an interview with EW, Carrigan talked about getting the role, and why he feels he best connects with Metamorpho, explaining:
"I think the reason why [writer/director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn] called me in specifically was because I really understood on a human level this idea of feeling different, feeling like something that has happened to you feels like a curse," says Carrigan, who has alopecia areata, resulting in hair loss.
"That was this unspoken thing that James and I understood. Then, once I really started to ask him questions about it, there was this sense that he really wanted someone who was quite tortured with what was going on. The really human quality of struggling with that, I think, comes through."
Superman will feature "certain elements" that allude to Metamorpho's backstory, Carrigan mentions— including the presence of Stagg Industries, a company pulled directly from DC Comics that plays a part in the character's origins. However, fans will meet Metamorpho "in full swing of who he is."
Adding to his tragic nature, the character arrives in the film's narrative when Lex, hellbent on destroying the Man of Steel, forces Metamorpho to transform his body into kryptonite in order to keep Superman weak.
"You're in a situation where it's having to hurt someone, having to be an agent of the bad guy. And at the same time, there's this struggle to want to be good," Carrigan explains. "What the film does brilliantly is it puts you in this situation of, 'Oh! He has no choice.' He has to be doing this, and you see how painful it is."
A self-proclaimed "big fan of practical effects," Carrigan says his Metamorpho transformation required about five-to-six hours in the makeup chair. "It's worth it," he adds. "It's worth it because you can actually feel the texture of something. Your brain notices the difference."
How did he cope with that process? "Maybe it's just the fact that I grew up with two older sisters who would sit me down and put whatever makeup they wanted on me, but I just go into a completely...I don't know, tranquil state. I am just having a good time. The hardest part, I think, is the last hour."
Superman opens in theaters on July 11th.

White House lashes out at 'South Park' over spoof of small-penis Donald Trump seducing Satan: 'Desperate attempt'

A White House spokesperson has responded to the season 27 premiere in a statement to EW. One day after hitting back at The View over Joy Behar's claim that Donald Trump was jealous of Barack Obama's looks, the White House has again taken aim at a Hollywood institution in a statement to Entertainment Weekly criticizing South Park's satirical depiction of the president seducing Satan in bed. The show's delayed season 27 premiere — which was pushed back and ultimately moved from Comedy Central to Paramount+ amid parent company Paramount's pending merger with Skydance — included several scenes that showed a fictionalized version of Trump with a small penis. He later makes his way to a bedroom at the White House, where he undresses and gets into bed with Satan, who remarks on the size of the animated Trump's genitals. "The left's hypocrisy truly has no end — for years they have come after South Park for what they labeled as 'offense' content, but suddenly they are praising the show," White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers tells EW via email, adding that "just like the creators of South Park, the left has no authentic or original content" to premiere. "This show hasn't been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention," the statement continues. "President Trump has delivered on more promises in just six months than any other president in our country's history — and no fourth-rate show can derail President Trump's hot streak." EW has reached out to representatives for Paramount for a response. The season 27 premiere of South Park started with Trump engaged in a meeting with a satirical depiction of the prime minister of Canada. Then, after the meeting, Trump passes by an artist painting his portrait, with the president stopping to yell at them for giving him a small penis in the image. "What the f--- is this?" the fictionalized version of Trump asks. "Why is my dick so small?" The artist replies, "That's the size it is in the photo," which prompts his removal from the White House. The cartoon iteration of Trump then enters his bedroom, where he undresses, revealing that his genitals are the same size as in the painting, and then attempts to seduce Satan in bed. South Park's season 27 premiere came after a delay that led co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone to release a statement criticizing the Skydance merge in which they alleged that "it's f---ing up South Park." Paramount announced Wednesday that the South Park production had reached a deal with Paramount+ to license the classic animated show, including putting all previous 26 seasons and forthcoming first-run episodes on the streaming service instead of Comedy Central. The announcement came shortly after CBS network announced that the Trump-critical The Late Show With Stephen Colbert would end in May 2026, which provoked many late-night hosts to rally around Colbert and offer their support amid observations that the Federal Communications Commission needs to approve the Paramount/Skydance merger. South Park is now streaming on Paramount+. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly

Comic-Con 2025 has arrived. Here's what to expect

Tens of thousands of fans — many in costumes — will descend Thursday on Comic-Con International, the four day pop culture spectacle that will feature updates on the new 'Predator' movie, 'Alien' series and a special appearance by George Lucas. Just don't expect major news about the future of Marvel's movie slate or what's next for the hit relaunch of DC's high-flying 'Superman' franchise. Both studios are sitting out Comic-Con 2025, as far as their film slates go. An estimated 135,000 people will attend the convention, which will greet Lucas on Sunday for his first Comic-Con appearance. The 'Star Wars' creator will discuss his new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art that will open next year in Los Angeles. Fans of the 'Alien' and 'Predator' franchises will have plenty to cheer. Elle Fanning, star of 'Predator: Badlands,' will discuss the film at Comic-Con's massive Hall H this week. FX will also bring the stars and creators of 'Alien: Earth,' a series that will unleash the Xenomorph species on Earth next month. 'Alien: Earth' will be one of the projects that brings a massive interactive experience to San Diego, with a replica of spacecraft from the series. The attraction will feature what's described as a terrifying mission at night. Marvel may not be presenting new movies, but it will have a 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' attraction near the convention, a tie-in to Friday's release of the latest attempt to successfully launch its 'first family' in theaters. Thousands of fans got a sneak peek at the convention's 460,000 square foot (42,700 square meter) exhibitor section, which features exclusive merchandise, comic book art and exhibits from brands like Star Wars, Lego, Nickelodeon, Paramount and more.

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Marvel fans anxious to see the new animated anthology series "Eyes of Wakanda" aren't going to have to wait as long. Entertainment Weekly reports that the series, previously slated for an August 27 release, will now stream on Disney+ as soon as next Friday, August 1. All four episodes of the series will stream on Disney+ on the premiere date. Read More: DC's 'Booster Gold' Moving Ahead at HBO Max The news comes from "Eyes of Wakanda" director and showrunner Todd Harris, who spoke to EW about the show just before San Diego Comic Con got underway. Disney+'s "Eyes of Wakanda." Disney+'s "Eyes of Wakanda." DISNEY "My goal for the whole show was to do the thing that a movie has trouble doing, which is making the world bigger," Harris told EW. "It is a nation with multiple zip codes." "It was mostly just expanding the backdrop of the world that [Ryan Coogler] was able to establish, with just a little bit more time and a few more opportunities at the watering hole. These things have been around for this long, really spreading out the mythology of Wakanda." Like another recent animated anthology project, Hulu's "Predator: Killer of Killers," the action in "Eyes of Wakanda" jumps across the centuries from one story to the next. Noni (Winnie Harlow) is the hero of the first episode. She's a former member of the Dora Milaje and now up for a role in the Hatut Zaraze, Wakanda's own covert ops organization. According to Harris's description, Noni has a bit of a rebellious spirit. He describes her as "a James Bond version of a Dora who just doesn't tow the company line." Harris says that with "Eyes of Wakanda" he sought to reach "to the weird corners in the Marvel universe to see what we can get away with." One of the things he's gotten away with is bringing the hero Iron Fist into "Eyes of Wakanda," but presumably not the one played by Finn Jones. In the source material, the Danny Rand version of Iron Fist played by Finn Jones is just one of many heroes who have carried the Iron Fist title. We don't know much about this new Iron Fist yet, but it's possible we could get a Wakandan Iron Fist. Regardless of where this new Iron Fist is from, fans will be able to find out Friday, August 1 when "Eyes of Wakanda" debuts on Disney+.
