Jersey futsal team at first international tournament

BBC News05-07-2025
Jersey's under-17 futsal team is taking on players from around the world at its first international tournament. The players have flown to Madeira for the International Tournament Funchal Futsal Cup which runs until 9 July.Sonny, 16, said: "It'll be good to see how we compare to the other teams and what the level will be like in Europe and England."Futsal was only introduced to Jersey five years ago but the team's head coach Martin Cassidy said there was now massive demand from players wanting to play the sport.
The Jersey team's rivals include the Kairat Almaty FC under-17s team from Kazakhstan who were runners-up in this year's Futsal Champions League and have won the Funchal competition twice previously.Stanley, 16, started playing futsal in 2020 "to help with the technical side of football" and to "just have some fun".Jack, 16, a futsal goalkeeper who only started playing eight months ago, said: "I got asked by a mate because we needed a goalkeeper and... I was really intrigued by it and I really wanted to do it."
'Really shocked'
Sonny said he first introduced futsal to the island to help his son's under-12 side at local football club St Paul's."We were really shocked at how within six months the technical development, especially the early development football players, picked it up a lot quicker," he said.He said Jersey was yet to establish any local teams or even have a permanent venue, meaning the team was pretty close to capacity in terms of members. "I can't progress it any further without support on a venue," he said."There's a lot of venues in Jersey, but there's also a lot of sports competing to get them."
Sonny said the team was under no illusion the tournament was going to be a challenge."We are going to learn a lot," he said."Every player is going to certainly come back a better player for it and this is the sort of pilot for us taking teams off island."

Newcastle make improved £40m offer for Brentford striker Yoane Wissa

Newcastle have made an improved £40m bid for Brentford striker Yoane Wissa as they seek to reinforce Eddie Howe's attack amid uncertainty regarding the future of Alexander Isak. As Isak trains separately from his Newcastle teammates in an attempt to force a move to Liverpool, Wissa missed Brentford's 3-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest last weekend as he, in turn, attempted to push through a transfer to St James' Park. Newcastle insist Isak will not be allowed to leave the club this summer. Wissa's potential arrival could yet alter that narrative. Despite suggestions from within St James' Park that Wissa is seen primarily as a replacement for Callum Wilson following his move to West Ham earlier this summer, it is striking how much the 28-year-old's Premier League scoring statistics from last season mirror those of Isak. While Wissa scored 19 goals in 35 appearances for Brentford, all from open play, Isak managed 23 goals in 34 appearances, with four of those resulting from penalties. Although Wissa, who turns 29 next month, has only one year remaining on his contract, Brentford are reluctant to lose him after seeing manager Thomas Frank depart for Tottenham, captain Christian Nørgaard head to Arsenal, and Bryan Mbeumo, Wissa's strike parter at the Gtech Community Stadium, leave for Manchester United this summer. Newcastle's initial £25m offer for the DR Congo striker was rejected but it was widely expected they would return. Their latest offer, submitted within hours of Isak's incendiary Instagram post in which he claimed Newcastle had broken promises and breached his trust, is believed to be an initial £35m with a further £5m in add ons. Brentford are thought to want between £50m-£60m for Wissa but could well accept Newcastle's offer given the player's attempts to leave the club, which has included deleting all Brentford references from his social media accounts. They have also added forward Dango Ouattara to their ranks, increasing Newcastle's confidence over a deal being done in the coming days. Any agreement is unlikely to come in time for Howe to field Wissa in Monday night's hotly-anticipated Premier League meeting with Liverpool at St James' Park.

'Difficult to forgive'

Newcastle United fan Kendall Rowan speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle about Alexander Isak's was initially asked if the striker will feature in the famous black and white stripes again."I was very steadfast in saying that no, probably we wouldn't," says Kendall."Eddie Howe, he likes the personality, the the way that players conduct themselves. And obviously Alex hasn't really done that very well in the last few weeks with this saga. So I I don't know if he ever plays again. I think we've been really good in kind of leaving that door. Hoping from our side with Eddie backing him in the major and saying there is a way back if Alex wants that, but that's up to Alex."We've been very much putting the onus on to him for wanting to leave. So there probably is a way - football's very fickle. And if he performs well and apologises and signs a new deal, I feel like maybe there's a very, very small percentage. But the disrespect that he's shown to the club and to the fanbase I just think is so hard to ignore and a lot of people will find that very, very difficult to forgive because he is still under contract and he has not fulfilled that contract as of now."So missing league games, we can't like plan for the future because we don't know whether he's going to stay, whether he's going to go. So, yes, it's just been very difficult. He's let a lot of people down. I'm just so disappointed in how he's behaved."Get more audio on the Magpies here

Wissa's evolving role - why do Newcastle want Brentford forward?

Brentford forward Yoane Wissa wants to join Newcastle, who need reinforcement up front, given the current stand-off between the club and star striker Alexander Isak. The Magpies have made their move with an improved £40m 28-year-old Wissa has form in replacing big names, having had an impressive 2024-25 campaign filling the void left by Ivan Toney's £40m departure to the Saudi Pro League last summer, a sale which heralded a change in Wissa's role for Brentford. He moved from an attacking midfield or support striker position to centre-forward and, as a result, was far more involved in the penalty change in emphasis resulted in the best scoring campaign of the DR Congo international's 12-season senior league career, with all 19 of his Premier League goals coming from inside the box. The DR Congo international ranked second overall for open-play goals in 2024-25, level with Isak, and ahead of the likes of former team-mate and new Manchester United man Bryan Mbeumo and his fellow Old Trafford colleague Matheus is a theme of Wissa's top-flight career, with all 45 of his Premier League goals having been scored from open looked in need of a cutting edge in their Premier League opener at Aston Villa last weekend, and Wissa's haul of 19 league goals last season makes him an attractive proposition – if the price is right.
