Indian troops kill at least 25 Maoist rebels: police
The bodies of those killed have not been identified.
RAIPUR, India - Indian commandos shot dead at least 25 Maoist rebels in central India on May 21, police said, as security forces ramp up efforts to crush the long-running conflict.
India is waging an all-out offensive against the last vestiges of the Naxalite rebellion, named after the village in the foothills of the Himalayas where the Maoist-inspired guerrilla movement began nearly six decades ago.
More than 12,000 rebels, soldiers and civilians have died since a handful of villagers rose up against their feudal lords there in 1967.
At its peak in the mid-2000s, the rebellion controlled nearly a third of the country with an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 fighters.
'Over 25 Maoists were killed in an encounter,' senior Chhattisgarh state police official Vivekanand Sinha told AFP.
The firefight broke out deep inside a forest in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district, a remote and densely wooded region that has long served as a Maoist stronghold.
Mr Sinha said the gun battle took place after intelligence reports indicated the presence of 'top Maoist leaders' in the area.
But he said it was not clear who exactly had been killed.
'The bodies have not yet been identified,' Mr Sinha said.
India's Home Minister Amit Shah has said the government is committed to 'eradicating Naxalism from its roots' by March 31 next year.
Earlier this month, police said they had killed 31 Maoist rebels during a three-week operation aimed at capturing a strategic hill range previously under the control of guerrillas.

Two women arrested after allegedly stealing $635 worth of items at Changi Airport Two female Indian nationals, aged 29 and 30, have been arrested for their involvement in three cases of shop theft at Changi Airport Terminals 2 and 3. The police said in a statement that they were alerted to a suspected theft involving a purse stolen from the Furla retail outlet located Changi Airport Terminal 3's departure transit area on June 2 at about 2.25pm. Officers from the Airport Police Division identified the two women with the aid of CCTV cameras. They were located within one hour of the report and detained before they could depart from Singapore. The Furla purse was recovered from the first woman but further checks found a new black haversack and a new bottle of perfume in the second woman's luggage. All three stolen items, with a total value of S$635, were recovered from the two women. Both women will be charged in court on June 10 with the offence of theft in dwelling. The offence carries a jail term of up to seven years, or a fine, or both. The police said they take a serious view of shop theft cases and offenders will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law. Explosion reported at US air base in Japan
TOKYO: An explosion occurred at a Japanese military facility inside a United States air base in Okinawa, officials told AFP, with local media reporting non-life-threatening injuries. A defence ministry spokesman said they had received reports of an explosion at the Japan Self-Defense Forces (SDF) facility inside Kadena Air Base in the southern Japanese region. Jiji Press and other local media said four injuries had been reported but none were life-threatening. Public broadcaster NHK said, citing unnamed defence ministry sources, that the explosion may have occurred at a temporary storage site for unexploded bombs, with officials trying to confirm the situation. "We've heard there was an explosion at the SDF facility and also heard there were injuries but we don't have further details," Yuta Matsuda, a local official of Yomitan village in Okinawa, told AFP.
