Trump makes gaffe during press conference with Japan's PM; revokes Biden's security clearance: Live updates

Independent08-02-2025

Donald Trump has said that Elon Musk will be taking a look at spending in the military and on education, having taken a hatchet to USAID,
Thousands of employees of the agency were set to be purged at midnight on Friday, but a federal judge stepped in and ordered a temporary pause on plans to send them packing. Trump's buyout offer to federal employees has also been temporarily blocked, in a separate hearing.
The president made the statement during a press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba at which the two leaders spoke of defense, trade, steel, and energy cooperation.
During remarks concerning Japanese interest in U.S. Steel, Trump mistakenly referred to ' Nissan,' the carmaker, not Nippon Steel. Trump said the firm would look at investing in the American company rather than the planned merger, which he opposed.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday, Trump said he was 'immediately revoking Joe Biden's Security Clearances and stopping his daily Intelligence Briefings.' Four years ago, Biden instructed U.S. intelligence officials to cease any briefings with Trump, pointing to the then-former president's 'erratic behavior' after the 2020 election.

Attempting to shrug off a recent Time cover showing Elon Musk sitting behind the Resolute Desk as president, Donald Trump mockingly asked whether the magazine was 'still in business' while claiming he hadn't seen the latest issue.
The president's dismissive snipe at Time comes just weeks after he boasted about being named the magazine's 2024 Person of the Year, an honor he's long coveted and first received after winning the presidential election in 2016.
Justin Baragona has the story.

Trump calls Gaza takeover plan a 'real estate transaction'
President Donald Trump on Friday continued to push his plan for the United States to take control of the Gaza Strip and threatened a host of new tariffs against American allies to be rolled out at a press conference next week.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office during a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Trump said he'd be announcing the trade actions — which amount to a unilateral tax increase on Americans — as part of his program for ensuring what he has called 'reciprocal' trade with American allies.

Critics say the Trump administration is on a 'lawbreaking spree.' Can the courts stop him?
Alex Woodward writes:
President Donald Trump 's unprecedented power grabs within his first three weeks in office have provoked an opposite and equal reaction in the form of an avalanche of lawsuits.
Now, how far the president can plunge the United States into a constitutional crisis could depend on a handful of federal judges.
Americans should be prepared for the administration to ignore them, 'unless and until there's real enforcement, either by law enforcement or by the Supreme Court,' says Ty Cobb, a former White House counsel during Trump's first administration.
'The real question is, will Trump honor those orders?' Cobb tells The Independent.

Afghan man accused of planning an Election Day attack in the U.S. pleads guilty

An Afghan man in Oklahoma accused of planning an Election Day attack in the U.S. on behalf of the Islamic State group pleaded guilty Friday to terrorism-related charges in federal court. Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, pleaded guilty to two offenses: conspiring and providing support to the Islamic State group, and attempting to receive firearms to commit a federal crime of terrorism. The Islamic State is designated by the U.S. as a foreign terrorist organization. Tawhedi faces up to 35 years in prison. 'The defendant admits he planned and obtained firearms to carry out a violent terror attack on Election Day in 2024, a plot that was detected and disrupted through the good work of the FBI and our partners,' FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement. A phone message was left seeking comment from Craig Hoehns, an attorney for Tawhedi. Tawhedi was living in Oklahoma City last year when he acquired two AK-47-style rifles and 500 rounds of ammunition to target large crowds, according to court documents. Authorities said he had conspired with multiple people, including his brother-in-law, Abdullah Haji Zada, for several months to plot out the attack. Zada, who was 17 at the time, was charged as an adult and pleaded guilty in April. He faces up to 15 years in prison. Tawhedi arrived in the U.S. in September 2021 on a special immigration visa shortly after the capital city of Afghanistan, Kabul, was captured by the Taliban. At the time of his arrest on Oct. 7, Tawhedi was on parole while his immigration status was pending, according to the Justice Department. His parole status has since been revoked. FBI agents had testified earlier that Tawhedi, who worked as a rideshare driver and at auto shops, was under surveillance for more than a month before his arrest.

Ivanka Trump parties with nepo baby model who made hateful claim against dad Donald

It seems as though Ivanka Trump doesn't hold a grudge, as the First Daughter was spotted partying with a nepo baby who previously made a hateful claim against her dad. Photographers caught the blonde beauty, 43, enjoying a night out in New York City with her husband, Jared Kushner, on Thursday evening. The couple attended the birthday celebration of his brother Joshua Kushner at Katz's Deli in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. They rubbed shoulders with a slew of famous faces at the party - including Cindy Crawford, her husband, Rande Gerber, and their model daughter Kaia Gerber. Kaia, 23, famously spoke out against Ivanka's father Donald Trump ahead of the 2024 election. She shared a strong-worded post to social media in October 2024 encouraging her followers to vote for his competition, Kamala Harris. The brunette beauty wrote at the time, 'In the words of Michelle Obama, "If we don't get this election right, your wife, your daughter, your mother, we as women will become collateral damage to your rage. So are you, as men, prepared to look into the eyes of the women you love and tell them you supported this assault?"' Kaia added, 'Right answers only. VOTE!!!!!!!' alongside a snap of her posing with her mail-in ballot that showed she had indeed voted for Kamala, as well as a collage of images of the former Vice President at a rally. Ivanka and Kaia seemed to put their past differences aside as they celebrated Joshua's birthday together in Manhattan. Katz's Deli is best known for being featured in the beloved 1989 film When Harry met Sally. It acted as the backdrop for the iconic scene where Meg Ryan 's character Sally faked an orgasm while sitting across from Billy Crystal's Harry, which was followed by the now-famous line: 'I'll have what she's having.' Ivanka flaunted her toned figure for the occasion, donning a tiny black gown that left her long legs on full display. The dress featured a plunging neckline, tight bodice and ruffled skirt. She accessorized with a black clutch, some flashy earrings, and strappy heeled sandals. Jared, for his part, wore some black trousers, blue sweater and black dress shoes. A bleary-eyed Ivanka walked hand-in-hand with her husband as they exited the acclaimed eatery. As for Kaia, she opted for a haltered, red, polka-dot midi dress and white flats that showcased her svelte physique. She shared a strong-worded post to social media in October 2024 encouraging her followers to vote for his competition, Kamala Harris Birthday boy Joshua, 40, donned black jeans, a white T-shirt, and an unbuttoned black shirt, while his wife, Karlie Kloss, 32, sported a chic black dress that had a thigh-high slit Cindy, 59, dressed casually for the party, opting for a pair of blue jeans and a black top that she tucked into the bottoms. Her husband Rande, 63, wore a black, button-down shirt, gray jeans, and matching gray sneakers. Cindy became one of the world's most popular supermodels in the '80s and '90s and Kaia has been following in her footsteps ever since. She has also dabbled in acting with roles in American Horror Story and the 2024 dark comedy Shell. Also at the party was Joshua's wife, Karlie Kloss, as well as musician Diplo and acclaimed fashion designer Diane Von Furstenberg. Birthday boy Joshua, 40, donned black jeans, a white T-shirt, and an unbuttoned black shirt, while his wife, 32, who is currently expecting her third child, sported a chic black dress that had off-the-shoulder sleeves and a thigh-high slit.
