Gran Turismo 7 Adds Free RE Amemiya RX-7 Loaner for Two Weeks as Nürburgring GP Time Trial Goes Live

⚡️ Read the full article on Motorious GT7 grants a free two-week drive of the RE Amemiya RX-7 during a Nürburgring GP Time Trial with dynamic medal targets. Gran Turismo 7 players can sample one of the game's most beloved rotary icons without spending credits, as Polyphony Digital has made the RE Amemiya FD3S RX-7 available to drive free of charge for the next two weeks in a new Nürburgring GP Time Trial. The special event uses Race Medium tires and showcases the RX-7's balanced chassis and 366-horsepower tune. Early session data seen by players on Wednesday showed a provisional Gold target around 2:05.554 and Bronze near 2:14.087, though thresholds typically adjust as more laps are set. Enthusiasts praised the car's grip and mid-corner speed but noted the exhaust note sounds less 'rotary' than expected. The RX-7 promotion arrives amid a quiet late-summer cadence for the title. Community chatter suggests Gran Turismo 7 may skip a traditional August content update, with speculation pointing to late September for the next patch. Polyphony has not announced timing. The Nürburgring GP layout has featured prominently in recent in-game competitions, including June's Suzuki Swift challenge and earlier 'Sprint'-course time trials with an electric Hyundai and a Nissan GT-R. The last rotary-specific spotlight appeared in January 2024 with a Mazda RX-8 event at the same venue. The current TT has also nudged some players back into the Legend Cars and Gr.1 showrooms for practice laps. One community tester reported buying a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS for 146,000 credits and clocking a 2:36 lap, citing heavy braking distances and wheelspin. A Ferrari 500 Mondial Pinin Farina Coupe, purchased with a brand invite, posted a lap roughly one second quicker but was resold at a loss. By contrast, a 2012 Toyota TS030 Hybrid — priced near one million credits — lapped in 1:52.755, highlighting the gulf between classic road cars and prototype racers. Rotary-themed garage tests showed a wide spread: rotary-swapped compacts such as an NA-generation Eunos Roadster and a Suzuki Cappuccino trailed at ~2:12, while a turbocharged RX-8 set a 2:03.886. An ND-generation MX-5 fitted with a 787B-derived four-rotor swap was described as the quickest — and most intimidating — of the group. For players chasing medals, community coaches pointed to clean exits from the Mercedes-Arena complex and disciplined braking into the final chicane as the biggest time gains. Others advised running controller or wheel without VR if frame-of-reference issues cost consistency on the GP layout. The RX-7 loaner is slated to remain active for two weeks. As with past time trials, rewards are awarded after the event closes based on final cutoffs.

The case for GM's Mary Barra as one of the greatest automotive CEOs

General Motors' bold agreement to jointly develop five vehicles with Hyundai-Kia solidifies CEO Mary Barra's status as a transformative leader of a company that long seemed adrift. The deal encompasses gasoline, hybrid and electric power trains, deepening the giant automakers' alliance. They expect the vehicles' sales to top 800,000 a year. The vehicles include: The plan leverages each company's strengths. GM will lead development of the midsize pickup platform. Hyundai takes point on the others. The van will be built in the United States as soon as 2028. The other vehicles go on sale in 2028. Expect production in South America. An automaker that pivots News that GM will extend production of the Cadillac XT5 luxury SUV in Spring Hill, Tennessee — with updates to keep it relevant in an intensely competitive segment — is consistent with a hallmark of Barra's tenure. Barra has instilled adaptability in place of a corporate culture that seemed frozen in the headlights of change. Managing change Thus far, GM has managed the transition to electric power better than any mass manufacturer — with the possible exception of its seemingly unflappable partners at Hyundai-Kia. GM has introduced a broad range of appealing EVs — Cadillac Optiq, Vistiq, Lyriq and Escalade IQ; electric versions of the Chevrolet Equinox, Blazer, Silverado; premium EVs at GMC — while continuing to roll out first-rate internal combustion models. That bank shot has kept GM's core moneymaking vehicles fresh and competitive and allowed it to react to changing regulatory and market conditions. With a new generation of full-size pickups and SUVs around the corner, GM's prospects should get brighter over the next four to five years. Barra's leadership — and close collaboration with longtime professional partner, GM President Mark Reuss — has seen the automaker through upheavals ranging from a global pandemic to an administration undoing decades of trade, energy and environmental policy. 2026 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcats: New 'jailbroken' model will offer 6 million customization combos Not every idea worked There have been mistakes. GM grievously underestimated the difficulty it would have building electric vehicle batteries at new U.S. plants. It should have kept the popular, affordable Chevrolet Bolt EV in production at least another 18 months. GM overestimated the adoption pace of electric pickups, but turned that miscalculation to its advantage, sidestepping tariffs by moving full-size pickup production to the plant where it had planned to build EV pickups. Going all-in on EVs left GM with a lack of competitive hybrids. Playing catch-up now, the new ones coming in 18 months or so better be outstanding. Some will likely come from the repurposed Orion Assembly plant. GM's decadelong, $10 billion autonomous-vehicle program continued after Ford and most others bailed out of self-driving cars. Most worrisome, it's unclear whether GM can succeed long-term in China. Despite those missteps, the trend line is positive. GM's leadership has been consistent in an era of upheaval. It invests ambitiously and largely well, developing a sensible and forward-looking range of vehicles and drivetrains. How's the competition doing? Other mass manufacturers have stumbled more. Stocking GM's cupboard Barra built a strong team. GM grew from a company that struggled to attract talent outside the Midwest to one with its pick from top organizations, and it gets raided for talent by the likes of Amazon and eBay. Tellingly, Ford recently named former GM, Amazon and Alto Pharmacy executive Alicia Boler Davis to head its crucial Ford Pro unit. It's time to acknowledge that Barra and Reuss form one of the best C-suite duos in automotive history. They labored together through years when poor planning and financial pressure kept GM from building the best vehicles its people could create. Determined not to go back, they'll be a tough act to follow. Contact Mark Phelan: mmphelan@ Follow him on Twitter @mark_phelan. Read more on autos and sign up for our autos newsletter. 3 moves GM made to navigate the tariff landscape

General Motors tapped its tariff-mitigation playbook the week of Aug. 4, inking three deals with new partners that will allow the automaker to better navigate this current landscape. One partnership aims to generate additional revenue, another should directly protect the automaker from import costs, while the third puts GM directly in the line of fire of tariffs, but only temporarily. Automaker partnership GM and Hyundai Motor announced on Aug. 6 the first vehicles the companies plan to jointly develop. Four of the vehicles — a compact SUV, a car, a pickup and a midsize pickup — are intended for retail sales and will support both internal combustion and hybrid powertrains. The automakers also said a co-developed electric commercial van is in the works. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The Insurance Savings You Expect Great Rates and Award-Winning Service Shilpan Amin, GM senior vice president and global chief procurement and supply chain officer, said on Aug. 7 that the vehicles announced will be targeted at the largest segments in the Central and South American markets, as well as the commercial segment in North America. 'By partnering together, GM and Hyundai will bring more choice to our customers faster, and at lower cost,' Amin said in a statement. 'These first co-developed vehicles clearly demonstrate how GM and Hyundai will leverage our complementary strengths and combined scale.' The truck, for which GM will be responsible, could be based on the platform for the next-gen Canyon or Colorado, proposes Sam Abuelsamid, vice president of Telemetry. 'When you have a partnership like this, the automakers try to structure it where each gets something out of it in terms of scale, components or manufacturing capacity,' he said. 'Some of these vehicles, most likely, will be built at GM plants, some will be built at Hyundai facilities, but ultimately will provide more scale, which tends to mean cost reductions.' If the van is based on a Hyundai platform and in North America, Abuelsamid said he would not be surprised if Hyundai constructed it at its plant in Savannah, Georgia. Battery deal with China GM plans to import electric vehicle batteries from China, Reuters reported Aug. 7. GM confirmed to the Free Press that the deal will function as a 'stopgap' until it can manufacture its own lower-cost batteries made with lithium iron phosphate chemistry in the U.S. alongside South Korean battery partner LG Energy Solution. GM would not confirm the specific company that makes the batteries, though Reuters reported that sources familiar with the matter believe it to be CATL. More: GM breaks EV range record with elaborate 2026 Silverado EV drive test 'For several years, other U.S. automakers have depended on foreign suppliers for LFP battery sourcing and licensing. To stay competitive, GM will temporarily source these packs from similar suppliers to power our most affordable EV model,' GM spokesman Kevin Kelly said in a statement. 'We're proud that we sell 12 EVs in the U.S. using domestically produced battery cells, and in 2027 we will bring LFP production to the U.S., further cementing our unique and resilient U.S.-based supply chain.' The batteries are slated for the new Chevrolet Bolt, which is planned to go into production in the fourth quarter of this year. Currently, there is no company producing lithium iron phosphate batteries at volume except for LG Energy Solution in its Holland, Michigan, plant, though that plant is focused on producing pouch cells for energy storage. Prismatic cells that are light on nickel boast another advantage ― in addition to a cheaper chemistry, the shape allows automakers to pack in more cells to a battery, Abuelsamid said. The pouch designs separate the cells through layers and limit how many cells rest in one pack. 'The pouch shape helps to isolate the cells, so in case ... you do have a defect or thermal runaway, it's less likely to spread to the entire battery pack,' he said. Automakers 'didn't realize how long the battery packs will last, so the module format helps with serviceability.' Of the total battery pack volume in modular systems, only 30% to 35% is devoted to active cell material storing energy, Abuelsamid added, because the box, the wiring and cooling components eat up the remaining space. 'When you get rid of those modules and go to a structural design, you can fill up that pack with cells. Or, conversely, you can also make a battery with the same capacity that's half the size,' he said. So even importing these batteries from China, 'GM must feel that the net cost makes sense on a temporary basis. It's probably going to still be cheaper than building now with nickel-rich cells.' Rare magnet agreement in Texas GM signed a multiyear supply agreement with Texas-based Noveon Magnetics for rare earth magnets in an effort to decrease reliance on foreign-sourced materials. Automakers, especially those focused on EVs, are among the largest industrial consumers of rare earth materials and have struggled in recent months to obtain supply tied up in the fluctuating tariff environment. Noveon is the sole operational manufacturer of sintered neodymium-iron-boron rare earth magnets, the most powerful available commercially, in the U.S. The magnets are deployed in the motors of electric and hybrid vehicles among other uses. Noveon said in a news release the agreement is to supply rare earth magnets to support GM's full-size SUVs and trucks. Rare earth magnets are seen as the most efficient way to power EVs and are known to improve torque. GM also maintains a relationship for rare earth magnets with California-based MP Materials, the only active and scaled rare earth production site in America. MP Materials broke ground in 2022 on its first rare earth metal, alloy and magnet factory in Fort Worth, Texas, where it will take the mined minerals and make them into finished alloy and magnets for GM's EVs starting later this year. Automakers require multiple sources for magnets because different grades of magnets are used for different applications. Magnets from MP are destined for electric vehicle drive motors, for example, while the deal with Noveon will supply magnets for internal-combustion engine truck production.
