Lions Cricket and Telkom renew partnership to strengthen inclusive pipeline

Lions Cricket are proud to confirm the Pride's partnership renewal with Telkom for at least three years, reinforcing a shared commitment to bridging the gap between amateur and professional cricket through a robust, inclusive, and all-encompassing pipeline programme.
The Telkom Talent Acceleration Programme is the umbrella under which the #ThePrideOfJozi cricketing ecosystem operates — identifying and nurturing talent both on and off the field.
At the heart of this system are foundational initiatives like the Mini-Cricket programme, which introduces the sport at grassroots level, with a strong focus on previously disadvantaged communities across Gauteng. Driven by passionate volunteers, the programme also includes coaching certifications and encourages local clubs to host community festivals to foster participation and enthusiasm.

Image: File The South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) has initiated a resolution process for Ditsobotla Primary Savings and Credit Co-operative Bank Limited (DCB) following its placement in resolution on 1 August 2025. This means qualifying depositors can expect to be reimbursed for their savings under the protection of the Corporation for Deposit Insurance (CODI), a subsidiary of the Sarb. On Monday, the Minister of Finance placed DCB in resolution with effect from 1 August after the Sarb recommended the intervention to protect the interests of DCB's depositors. DCB has failed to meet regulatory requirements for an extended period, was operating at a loss and could not fulfil its financial obligations. In addition, the bank's governance, internal controls, systems and risk management practices have proven to be inadequate. Despite heightened supervision by the Prudential Authority (PA), DCB did not implement the corrective actions requested by the PA. As legally mandated, every registered bank in South Africa, including DCB, is a member of CODI, which guarantees deposit insurance coverage up to R100 000 per depositor for both principal and interest on qualifying products. For depositors of DCB, CODI's coverage extends to individual special savings accounts and those held by stokvels. The organisation is diligently reviewing the bank's records to identify any additional products that might qualify for coverage under deposit insurance regulations. Qualifying depositors are encouraged to verify their claims in person by visiting the DCB verification site at 50 Bree Street in Lichtenburg on Thursday, 7 August, and Friday, 8 August 2025, between 09:00 and 16:00. Kholofelo Morodi, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Region 4, was thrilled to announce the official reopening of the road after extensive repairs were completed on the large sinkhole that had forced its closure since April 2022. She said the reopening marks not only the restoration of a vital road but also the city's commitment to rebuilding infrastructure and restoring public trust. Morodi said: 'For safety reasons, the road was immediately closed, and the leaking pipe was diverted to prevent further damage. The closure disrupted daily life for many residents, with some even forced to relocate their gates and driveways. The detour also meant longer travel times to places like Doringkloof Mall and the local NG Kerk.' She said geological investigations were finalised in August 2023, and repair works officially began in May 2025. 'Upon commencement, it was discovered that the sinkhole had expanded significantly over the three years, surpassing initial size and cost estimates. The total cost of repairs is projected at around R4.4 million, pending final certification,' she said. According to her, the city took a methodical and safety-first approach to the repairs, which involved using imported rock boulders to stabilise the sinkhole up to two meters below ground level, followed by the application of high-slump concrete to fill cavities and reinforce structural integrity. 'Boreholes were grouted to prevent future subsidence, and the site was backfilled with compacted soil in line with engineering standards. Damaged water and sewer lines were replaced, and the road was reconstructed using durable materials, including a medium asphalt surfacing,' she said. Residents of Centurion have welcomed the reopening of the road for restoring access and convenience to key locations within the area. One of them, Allen Truder, said: 'This road is a shortcut to the mall at Doringkloof and the NG Kerk. It used to take more time to get there, but now that it's open, it will take less than five minutes.' Last week, the Freedom Front Plus in Tshwane said it was pushing for urgent action to address the sinkhole crisis through a campaign to petition the city to declare Region 4 a disaster area. The party has collected 3,500 physical signatures by visiting schools and engaging with the community. An online campaign has also been launched to gather more signatures. Tshwane has budgeted R14.7 million to address the sinkhole crisis, but it falls far short of the estimated R180 million needed to fix over 60 sinkholes.

The request for the extension of the contract to conduct emergency remedial work on the concrete and roof structure for MMS was noted at the Community Services Committee (CSC) on July 17. The refurbishment of the MMS started on March 28, 2024, and is due to end on September 28, 2025. However, the municipality stated that some projects were delayed as priority was provided to foundation packages that are the backbone, while the remaining packages envisaged for completion in 2025/2026 and 2026/ 2027 financial years. The renovation will also see the introduction of the following new features to ensure the stadium remains a premier tourist destination: New Viewing Platform with 60% increase in floor area featuring a cantilevered glass floor for an 'Air Walk' experience. New Sky Car with increased travel time, which will be accessible to people with disabilities. New Big Swing with improved access to the launch platform. New Zip Line, which ends at the People's Park. Compression Ring Walk, which provides panoramic views with a sea-facing bungee jump option. The municipality stated that the refurbishment not only secures MMS as a premier venue for sports, concerts, and cultural events but also contributes to local job creation, skills development, and small business support through the procurement of services from local contractors. Despite the renovations, the stadium has successfully hosted several high-profile events, including the 2025 Nedbank Cup Final and the Toyota Cup between Kaizer Chiefs and Asante Kotoko on July 26, 2025.
