Of all the rock bands in the world, it's safe to say that the Grateful Dead's fans are known for being perhaps the most devoted in music history — with the band's late lead guitarist and singer, Jerry Garcia, inspiring the most love of all the members in listeners around the world. So when Garcia lapsed into a diabetic coma on July 10, 1986, fans were absolutely devastated. And while he woke up five days later, the aftermath of Garcia's coma would change the course of the Grateful Dead's future.
As The Los Angeles Times reported that week, Garcia "was hospitalized after slipping into a diabetic coma" as a result of an infection caused by an abscessed tooth. According to The Wrap, his blood sugar was the second highest the doctors at Marin General Hospital in California had ever seen, and his kidneys had shut down.
"His heart stopped,' his wife at the time, Carolyn Adams (Mountain Girl), said later. 'He died. The hospital didn't want anyone to know this, but he died. They had to resuscitate him.'
Adams was told her husband might be brain-damaged if he survived. Miraculously, Garcia came out of his coma five days later, but he had a long road of recovery ahead which involved learning how to play guitar again (in addition to walking and other basic skills).
In an interview recovered by Grateful Ramblings and published by Rock and Roll Garage in 2021, Garcia reflected on the "very weird" experience of being in a coma.
"My main experience was one of furious activity and tremendous struggle in a sort of futuristic, space-ship vehicle with insectoid presences," he recalled. "After I came out of my coma, I had this image of myself as these little hunks of protoplasm that were stuck together kind of like stamps with perforations between them that you could snap off.'
After waking up, Garcia explained, 'I was pretty scrambled. It was as though in my whole library of information, all the books had fallen off the shelves and all the pages had fallen out of the books. I would speak to people and know what I meant to say, but different words would come out. So I had to learn everything over again. I had to learn how to walk, play the guitar, everything."
Only five months later, the Grateful Dead were back on the road again. Garcia's renewed health helped to inspire their 1987 comeback record, In the Dark, which became their best-selling studio album.
'Garcia's return was greeted as a veritable Second Coming by his fans,' Garcia's biographer, Blair Jackson, wrote.
Sadly, Garcia would continue to struggle with his health in the years to come. In an attempt to deal with his ongoing addictions, Garcia checked into Betty Ford Clinic in July 1995, then Serenity Knolls, a Bay Area holistic health retreat, two weeks later. He died in his room there on August 9, 1995, after suffering a heart attack. He was 53 years old.Beloved '60s Rock Icon Suddenly 'Slipped Away' 39 Years Ago Today and Changed Music Forever first appeared on Parade on Jul 10, 2025

Kenan Thompson Shares His Honest Thoughts on Stephen Colbert's 'Late Show' Cancellation (Exclusive)

Kenan Thompson Shares His Honest Thoughts on Stephen Colbert's 'Late Show' Cancellation (Exclusive) originally appeared on Parade. Kenan Thompson has Stephen Colbert's back. On July 17, CBS announced it was endingThe Late Show With Stephen Colbert in May 2026, and Thompson, 47, was just as surprised as everyone else to hear the news. "It sucks to see Colbert go down," Thompson exclusively tells Parade while discussing his latest partnership with Autotrader. "But I think the television landscape is changing dramatically, so I don't know if it's a political thing or if it's just the fact that it's not making business sense anymore, but it sucks. This dude is one of the greatest comedy minds that we have, and it just happens to be on a show that isn't fiscally making sense anymore, from what I'm reading." He adds, "It's more alarming that similar programs, which are the programs that I grew up watching and my parents grew up watching, [might be next]." 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 Colbert's show will wrap-up next year, and although the SNL star has only been on once, he has nothing but fond memories. "It was one of the greatest days of my life," Thompson recalls of his visit to The Late Show. "He was so kind and so funny, and I didn't know how cool he was. I always thought he was more nerdy, just because he kind of plays that up a little bit, but he's actually really down [to earth]. I was pleasantly surprised to learn how chill he was." Thompson hopes this is the only shocking late-night shake-up to occur. "If it happens to the other shows, these are my friends," Thompson points out. "We're talking Jimmy Fallon. We're talking Seth Meyers. These are my brothers in the game, so I just hope there's a way to turn [their shows] into something that makes sense and keep those guys in our lives in some sort of capacity. Change on 100-year-old shows is never fun." Related: As for his latest partnership with Autotrader and their user-friendly app designed to make buying a car easier, Thompson says it's taken his love of automobiles to the next level. "If I could have a dealership or a mechanic shop, I probably would do it if I had the patience for it," Thompson explains, adding that Autotrader has "all the tools" to help you save time when shopping for your next car purchase. "They're just making it really, really easy on the consumer to get into your dream car, or a car that works for you. It's nice to be an ambassador for that. I'm a big fan of convenience and a fan of cars, so it seems like a match made in heaven." 'Friday Night Lights' Star Taylor Kitsch Offers Update on Reboot Return

'Friday Night Lights' Star Taylor Kitsch Offers Update on Reboot Return originally appeared on Parade. Taylor Kitsch isn't suiting up for the Friday Night Lightsreboot. Well, at least not in the way fans had hoped. The actor, 44, who played brooding fan-favorite Tim Riggins in the NBC drama from 2006 to 2011, confirmed this week that he won't return for the upcoming FNL revival series currently in development at Peacock. 'I was asked to do it,' Kitsch told The Wrap on August 4 at the premiere of The Terminal List: Dark Wolf. 'Yeah, I'm not going back. No.' That statement only confirmed the comments he made earlier this year during a SiriusXM interview, where he acknowledged he'd been approached about the project but said he didn't plan to reprise the role full time. He's not the only alumni in limbo. Connie Britton, who played Tami Taylor on the series, told Parade in March that the new show is "barely on" her radar. Still, for fans holding out hope to see Riggins down a cold one in Dillon, all may not be lost. 'I'll do a cameo,' Kitsch said in a separate interview with Access. 'I would do one. It's got to be out of control, though.' Asked how he imagines Riggins might be living these days, Kitsch didn't miss a beat: 'Probably having a cold one on the lake with a couple girls waiting for him in the cabin." Kitsch's portrayal helped define the soul of the original Friday Night Lights, based on the 1990 nonfiction book and 2004 film of the same name. While the show built a full ensemble of standout performances — including Kyle Chandler, Michael B. Jordan, and Jesse Plemons — Kitsch became a fan favorite. Peacock's reboot, officially announced in December, will be a reinvention of the original series, set in the wake of a devastating hurricane as a new high school football team and their interim coach rally for a Texas state championship. Taylor Kitsch turns down Friday Night Lights revival

Taylor Kitsch won't be appearing in the Friday Nights Lights revival. The 44-year-old actor portrayed Tim Riggins in the original series but has confirmed he has turned down an approach to reprise the role for Peacock's upcoming reboot. Asked if he had heard anything about the project, he told TheWrap: 'I was asked to do it. Umm, yeah, I'm not going back. No.' The sports drama ended in 2011 after five seasons, but in November, it was revealed a reboot was in the works, with showrunner Jason Katims, and Peter Berg, who developed the original series, both attached to return. A longline for the new show reads: 'Following a devastating hurricane, a rag tag high school football team and their damaged, interim coach make an unlikely bid for a Texas High School State Championship becoming a beacon of light for their town." Earlier this year, Taylor revealed plans to open a nature retreat in honour of his sister. The Battleship star took two years off work in the mid-2010s to help Shelby Kitsch-Best battle her addition to opioids and other drugs and as a "tip of the hat" to her recovery, he is planning to use part of the 22 acres of land he owns in Bozeman, Montana, to establish a retreat for other members of the sober community to help them with their own struggles. He told People magazine: "I didn't even know sober escapes existed until I had the crash course with my sis. "I was like, 'Man, it sounds incredible to offer people a chance to reconnect in nature and slow things down.'... "You want to go hike, fish, hang out, do nothing, write, read, anything? It's is all up there for you." Taylor - who hopes the retreat can also benefit children and veterans - also plans to have a sweat lodge on the property, where a local shaman can perform ceremonies after finding the practice helpful while preparing for his latest project, 'American Primeval'. He said:"People will have the opportunity to sweat with him and work on whatever they need to work on. It's been incredibly helpful for me."
