
Brazil's Pix set for next leap with launch of recurring payments
Since its launch in late 2020, Pix has rapidly become the leading payment method in Latin America's largest economy, surpassing cash as well as debit and credit cards. Last year it handled more than 26 trillion reais ($4.61 trillion) in transactions.
Initially slated for launch last October, the new feature will go live on June 16, allowing users to authorize recurring charges with a single consent, according to the central bank, which developed and operates Pix.
That will allow for automatic payments of utilities, phone bills, school tuition, gym memberships, and digital or streaming services via the new "Pix Automatico" tool.
"'Boleto' will be overtaken by Pix Automatico when it comes to automatic payments," said Renato Gomes, the central bank's financial system organization director. Boleto is the traditional slip method, which moved 6.2 trillion reais last year, according to banking federation Febraban.
Speaking at a central bank event in Sao Paulo to present the feature, Gomes added that existing automatic debit services via banks are also likely to be disrupted by the new tool.
Companies must sign bank agreements to offer automatic debit, a process central bank regulation director Gilneu Vivan described as burdensome for small businesses. Pix Automatico will simplify the process, allowing small merchants to receive recurring payments with ease.
Vivan also noted that nearly 60 million Brazilians do not own a credit card, a group that will now be able to access subscription-based services previously limited to cardholders.
A study by payments platform EBANX estimates that Pix Automatico could handle at least $30 billion in e-commerce transactions within its first two years of operation.

Nubank sees more credit growth as quality gauges hold up
[SAO PAULO] Nu Holdings, Latin America's biggest digital bank, reported a decline in credit quality that was roughly in line with analysts' expectations, and said that it expects credit growth to continue for the rest of the year. The fintech known as Nubank said that its 90-day delinquency ratio increased 10 basis points in the second quarter from the first three months of the year, to 6.6 per cent, according to a statement on Thursday (Aug 14). The 15- to 90-day delinquency ratio declined 30 basis points to 4.4 per cent. Shares of Nubank rose as much as 7.8 per cent in postmarket trading in New York on Thursday. 'Absolutely all the asset classes we operate in Brazil, Mexico and Colombia are performing better or marginally better than expected,' chief financial officer Guilherme Lago said in an interview before earnings were released. 'The macro deterioration being discussed since the end of last year didn't materialise in our credit indicators, including the numbers from August until today.' Nationwide, credit quality has been getting worse in Brazil, Nubank's largest market. Delinquencies for individuals rose 0.7 percentage point to 4.3 per cent in June from a year earlier, according to the central bank. And most of the deterioration came from credit cards and personal loans, two of Nubank's most important businesses. The fintech, which operates in Brazil, Mexico and Colombia, does not expect to materially decrease its growth for the rest of the year. It adjusted its credit model in Brazil for roughly a third of its clients, a shift that allowed it to increase some of its customers' credit limits, according to industry analysts. Nubank expects to roll out the update to the whole client base in Brazil to the end of this year. Itau's second-quarter results, which beat analysts' expectations earlier this month, widened the gap between the two banks. Nubank has also lost several top executives this year, including chief technology officer Vitor Olivier, who said earlier this week that he's leaving to start a business focused on artificial intelligence. Chief operating officer Youssef Lahrech and chief product officer Jag Duggal have also left the company this year. Nubank's shares are up roughly 15 per cent this year after gaining 24 per cent last year and more than doubling in 2023. The stock has been recovering since late February, when the fintech shed US$12 billion in market value in one day after fourth-quarter results fell short of expectations. Brazil's fish industry, hit with a 50% US tariff, seeks a lifeline

The new levies made the future highly uncertain for Brazilian fishing companies, which sell close to $400 million worth of seafood to the U.S. a year, or about 70% of the sector's annual exports. "This situation renders our business unviable," said Arimar França Filho, the head of a fishing union in Brazil's northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte. "While the domestic market can absorb some of our production, it cannot take it all, and we cannot have all our boats fishing solely for Brazil. "The fish industry is calling for an emergency credit line of 900 million reais ($165 million) to navigate the new economic climate. It is also pushing the government to deepen negotiations aimed at reopening the European market, which has been closed to Brazilian fish exports since 2017. Even as producers scrambled to get their goods to the U.S. ahead of the tariffs that hit on Wednesday, some fishing boats had already been sidelined to prevent excess production, the union leader said. Eduardo Lobo, president of the lobby group Abipesca, said that the sector has no other short-term alternative. "Without credit, it's impossible to maintain inventories, honor commitments, and preserve jobs," he warned in a statement, estimating that the tariffs could affect some 20,000 jobs if authorities fail to respond quickly. "There could be giant unemployment, not tomorrow," said Attilio Sergio Leardini, founding partner at Leardini Pescados, one of Brazil´s largest suppliers, which exports to several countries, including the U.S. "But maybe in six months, in a year, some segments may be halting production." Leardini is most worried about premium products – such as lobster, tuna, and croaker fish – which are highly sought after by the U.S. market but are unlikely to find enough buyers in Brazil, particularly at the prices American consumers pay. Many fishermen are desperate, believing they won't find consumers to pay prices that support a reasonable standard of living for their families. "But as we know, it's not in our control," said França Filho, the union leader. Fishermen, he predicted, will see reduced prices starting this week, while Brazilian consumers are likely to find cheaper fish in the supermarket aisle within a month. That much was happy news to Michel de Oliveira França, the owner of a fish shop in the city of Niteroi, in Rio de Janeiro. "The cheaper, the better," he said. "The tendency is to sell more and more." Brazil, Japan beef talks focus on smaller Brazilian states, upsetting industry
SAO PAULO :Ongoing talks to open the Japanese market to Brazilian beef are focusing on supplies from three small Brazilian exporting states, upsetting other parts of the South American country's industry that are eager to reach the high-paying customers, according to multiple sources. Brazil, the world's biggest beef exporter, has tried for two decades to crack the Japanese market without success. A deal would give Japan an alternative to its top suppliers, the United States and Australia, at a time when U.S. tariffs are reshaping global food trade. Negotiations gained momentum after a state visit of Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in March to Japan, one of the world's largest beef importers. But the current state of talks, which focus on states representing less than 4 per cent of Brazil's exports by volume, worries meatpackers in the big beef-producing states of Sao Paulo, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Para. Together, they accounted for nearly 60 per cent of Brazil's total beef exports, or 1.72 million metric tons last year. A Brazilian government memo, issued after a technical visit by Japanese officials in June, showed Brasília answered "a questionnaire for the import of beef from the southern part of the Republic Federation of Brazil," naming Rio Grande do Sul, Parana, and Santa Catarina. Those three small exporting states were declared free of foot-and-mouth, a contagious viral disease in cattle, earlier than the other states, although Brazil acquired in May the national status of being free of the disease without vaccination from the World Organization for Animal Health. Brazil's last outbreak of the disease was in 2006, according to the government. The Brazilian Agriculture Ministry did not have an immediate comment on its talks with Japan. A local government source, who asked not to be named, confirmed talks were taking place by region. The person said Brazil initially has no plans to negotiate permits beyond the three states. Beef sector representatives, including exporters, told Reuters they hope more states will be included. "We know talks are difficult," said Paulo Mustefaga, head of beef lobbying group Abrafrigo, which represents Marfrig and smaller beef exporters. "The surprise for us is that this is now moving towards approval for only three states." Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said it was aware of Brazil's status of being free of foot-and-mouth disease. It added that Japan is "conducting a risk assessment in accordance with Japanese procedures" ahead of issuing any export permits to Brazilian meatpackers, without elaborating.
