‘Emotional' Yu Zidi celebrates historic World Swimming Championships medal at age 12
Yu swam in the heats of the women's 4x200m freestyle relay but missed Thursday's final as China claimed bronze behind Australia and the United States in Singapore.
Yu, who competed in the women's 200m butterfly final on Thursday, finishing fourth, received a medal as a member of the Chinese relay team.
'It feels quite emotional, it's a nice feeling,' she said.
Yu has turned heads with her performances in Singapore. She qualified for Monday's 200m individual medley final and finished fourth, missing out on a medal by just 0.06sec in what is not considered her strongest event.

She followed that up with another fourth in the 200m butterfly final and will also compete in the 400m individual medley.
She has drawn historical comparisons to Denmark's Inge Sorensen, who at 12 was the youngest-ever winner of an Olympic swimming medal with bronze at the Berlin Games of 1936.
But not everyone thinks Yu should be competing in Singapore.
Some in the sport have raised questions about the mental and physical impacts of high-level training and competing at an age when she is still developing as a person.
Under current World Aquatics rules, the minimum age is 14, but younger swimmers can compete at the championships if — like Yu — they are fast enough.

A police report filed by the Port of Seattle Police Department detailed that the two athletes were seen on security footage getting into a 'heated' verbal argument shortly after passing through airport security on 27 July. The incident quickly escalated beyond words. Surveillance video shows Richardson repeatedly approaching Coleman as he appeared to try walking away. The 25-year-old allegedly pushed him hard enough to send him into a column. Even after that, Coleman continued to walk, but she reportedly kept bumping into him before pushing him again this time forcefully enough to send him 'flying a few feet away,' according to the report. Coleman returned toward the security checkpoint seeking help, but Richardson continued to follow him and allegedly threw a pair of headphones, striking him. Though police ultimately found probable cause to arrest Richardson on a charge of domestic violence assault, Coleman reportedly refused to cooperate with the investigation. The report noted that he 'declined to be a victim.' Richardson was taken into custody and booked into the South Correctional Entity Jail. She remained there until her release on Monday afternoon. Richardson, who captured gold in the 4x100m relay and silver in the 100m sprint at the 2024 Paris Olympics, had made her relationship with Coleman public in early 2025. Telangana to unveil new sports policy today
Hyderabad: With a vision to transform Telangana into a cradle of Olympic champions, chief minister A Revanth Reddy will launch the state's new sports policy at the Telangana Sports Conclave on Saturday at HICC, Hi-Tec City. The conclave will see participation from some of India's most celebrated sportspersons, including Gagan Narang, Pullela Gopichand, and Abhinav Bindra. As part of the state's broader efforts to revamp its sporting ecosystem, the govt will sign several key MoUs, notably with FIFA and the Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP).
