Angry Marc Marquez slams critics questioning brother Alex's racing hunger

Reutersa day ago

ASSEN, Netherlands, June 29 (Reuters) - Ducati's Marc Marquez launched a spirited defence of his younger brother Alex on Sunday, condemning critics who have questioned whether his sibling is deliberately avoiding challenging him for victories in sprints and races this season.
Marc, who has dominated the season with 15 victories across sprints and Sunday races, bristled when discussing social media comments and journalists' questions suggesting his brother might be holding back during their frequent one-two finishes.
Alex has finished second 14 times and he came in for criticism for not being aggressive enough to overtake his older brother, with the Gresini Racing rider sitting 68 points behind Marc.
"I was a bit angry because people must respect the other riders. Yesterday, many people I saw on social media and even some journalists asked me and told me that 'No, your brother is not attacking you as the others'," Marquez told TNT Sports.
"People started to say that and I was angry at that time because Alex is defending his colours, he has the ambition, for that reason he's second in the championship, because he's riding in a very good way.
"He's trying to manage his situation. But as we see today, another rider with another brand, with another nationality wanted to win, but he can't attack me, because if the front rider defends well, nobody can attack you."
Alex did not score points at the Dutch Grand Prix race on Sunday following a crash where he broke his hand, which requires surgery.
To drive the point home, Marc described how Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi finished second behind him at Sunday's race at Assen despite the Italian trying his very best to overtake him, eventually finishing less than a second behind the Ducati rider.
"And today Marco Bezzechi, why didn't he attack me? I was defending and I know that my weak point was at turn 11-12, that is the fastest area, it's a very narrow circuit and if you defend there, nobody can attack me," Marc added.
"So I was defending there, just trying to attack on the brake points.
"But I just want to say that people must respect the other riders and just enjoy the show. Everybody is defending his colours and everybody wants to win."
Victory in the sprint and race meant more to Marc after a bruising practice session on Friday when he crashed twice.
"Adrenaline is the best painkiller that exists, this is always my medicine," he said.
"But now I will rest for two or three days to recover, especially the ribs, the finger, the arm -- the whole body. Big crashes are not the same (at) 20 years old as (when you are) 32!"

Opinion: could Antonelli crashing into Verstappen end... Russell's Mercedes career?

Formula One Yesterday's Austrian GP crash could have big repercussions. Let us explain our theory Skip 1 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Yep, you read that right: when Kimi Antonelli speared into the back of Max Verstappen yesterday – ending their Austrian Grand Prix after just three corners – no one should've been fretting about it more than George Russell in the other Mercedes. Let's rewind the tape. Before the race weekend George dropped a bit of a bombshell on Sky Sports , telling Karun Chandhok the reason he was still waiting on a contract for 2026 was that Merc are trying to lure Max away from Red Bull. Advertisement - Page continues below 'If you're going to be back on top, you need to make sure you've got the best drivers,' he explained. 'So it's only normal conversations with the likes of Verstappen are ongoing.' Mic. Drop. Well not really, because Verstappen has been linked to a Silver Arrows switch for a while now. But Russell's un-subtle choice of words meant team boss Toto Wolff had to talk about it in more detail than he would've liked to in the hours that followed. Awkward. You might like Advertisement - Page continues below And just a few short weeks ago, Max appeared to deliberately drive into George at the Spanish GP, leaving him just one penalty point away from a race ban. None of this is a recipe for chummy teammates. So you've got to imagine that if Mercedes do somehow convince Verstappen to join next season, Russell would be the one getting his P45. Even though his Canada GP win, five podiums and all-round brilliance has largely put his rookie teammate in the shade. F1 is weird. So, how might Verstappen wriggle out of his contract at Red Bull? He's supposedly tied down until the end of 2028, but earlier this year Red Bull motorsport advisor and long-time Verstappen ally Helmut Marko hinted that a performance clause could allow him to break free. The rumour – and this is the crucial bit – is that the clause will be activated if Max is lower than third in the drivers' championship by the summer break. That's just three races away, after the British, Belgian and Hungarian Grands Prix. Thank you for subscribing to our newsletter. Verstappen is currently third in the standings, and the driver most likely to catch him? Yup, it just had to be a Mr G Russell of Kings Lynn, now only nine points behind following the Dutchman's DNF this weekend. All we're saying is… if Russell does overhaul Verstappen before F1 shuts down for August, it'll probably be in no small part thanks to Max's only retirement of 2025 so far. And then the course of history will be set: Max moves to Merc for 2026, the team monsters the new V6 hybrid engine regs and the Dutchman reels off another four titles before retiring to a life of sim racing as the undisputed GOAT. You heard it here first. And possibly last.

Tribe is the first island player to make it into the English first-class game since Jersey became an international made his international debut for Jersey as a 17-year-old, has played 25 T20 internationals to date and featured in all five of Jersey's games in their 50-over World Cup qualifiers in Namibia in says qualifying for a World Cup for the first time - having reached the final round of qualifying four times in the past - would be massive for Jersey. Ron Wood's selections NAP: Silver Wraith (5.45, Windsor) 1pt win @ 11/4 with William Hill @ 4/5 with William Hill ⭐⭐⭐ Other: Zoulu Chief (7.15, Windsor) 1pt win @ 9/1 with William Hill @ 40/1 with William Hill ⭐⭐ Odds provided by William Hill and correct at the time of writing. Stars denote strength of selection (max 5). If you already have a William Hill account and are looking for a new bookmaker to use for this week's racing, check out more free bets from the best betting sites, reviewed by our experts. 5.45 Windsor – Class 5 Handicap (5f) There's a straightforward case to be made for the lightly raced SILVER WRAITH (NAP) in the opening race at Windsor this evening. The Emma Lavelle-trained three-year-old ran well to finish second in a Class 4 handicap at Goodwood on his handicap debut and, with the promise of more to come and a drop in class, he has fair-looking claims of going one place better. Selection: Silver Wraith 1pt win @ 11/4 with William Hill 7.15 Windsor – Class 2 Handicap (6f) ZOULU CHIEF was disappointing when selected on this page at Windsor last Monday. He has been a nightmare to follow since his useful two-year-old days but just maybe he's worth one more chance. Speed is his asset but he wasn't ridden forwardly enough to make use of it last week. However, he had previously shaped well at Ascot and York in the spring. Stepping back up to 6f should help him find his comfort zone on or near the front of the pack this time, and newly fitted blinkers also point to a return to forward-going tactics. He faces competition for the lead from Havanagreattime, but the selection has the cruising speed to travel comfortably over this flat, fast test at the distance and he's well weighted on his best. Zoulu Chief's jockey, Saffie Osborne, was particularly effective from the front when riding Diligent Harry to victory in a Group 3 race at Newcastle on Saturday. Selection: Zoulu Chief 1pt win @ 9/1 with William Hill Today's UK and Irish racing (Flat unless stated) Pontefract 2.00-5.00 Ffos Las 2.15-4.45 Windsor 5.45-8.45 Wolverhampton 6.00-9.00 What does NAP mean? NAP is a word used in betting circles to describe a prediction that a tipster thinks has a particularly strong chance of winning. Many horse racing tipsters pick out a 'NAP of the day', which is their favoured selection from all the races across the different meetings. The term NAP derives from the French card game Napoleon. When players of this game thought they had a particularly strong hand that they would win with, they would shout 'Napoleon'. What is an each-way bet? An each-way bet is a popular type of wager, particularly with horse racing fans. It is essentially two bets, both of which have the same size stake. An each-way bet features one bet on the selection to win and the other bet on the selection to place. So a £10 each-way bet will cost you a total of £20. There will be one £10 bet on the selection to win and another £10 on the selection to place. It's a popular bet because it offers punters the chance of a return, even if the horse in question fails to win. Bookmakers will pay out at a stated percentage of the odds for a place finish, for example one-fifth of the starting price (SP) for finishing in the first three. The more runners there are in a horse race, the more places will be on offer. In races that feature lots of runners, the horses will be available at bigger odds, making an each-way bet a wise choice.
