Palakkad Division introduces lightweight mobile ramps and specially designed wheelchairs at major stations
As part of the project, 24 lightweight mobile ramps and 24 specially designed wheelchairs were formally handed over for deployment across 20 major stations in the Palakkad Division, including Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction, said a release.
The initiative, supported by the Swarga Foundation in collaboration with the International Gemological Institute, India, was inaugurated by Divisional Railway Manager Arun Kumar Chaturvedi. The Division said Indian Railways has consistently endeavoured to improve infrastructure and services for differently-abled passengers, with Palakkad Division being at the forefront of these efforts.
Facilities such as lifts, designated ramps, accessible toilets, and wheelchair services were already available across many stations. The launch of Project Sugamya further strengthens these initiatives by introducing mobile ramps and customised wheelchairs to make rail travel even more barrier-free and dignified, the release said.
The mobile ramps would facilitate seamless boarding and alighting from coaches, while the customised wheelchairs would support safe and independent movement within the station premises and inside trains, it said.
Mr. Chaturvedi said 'The addition of mobile ramps and customised wheelchairs will provide greater convenience, safety, and independence to our differently-abled passengers. We appreciate the contributions of Swarga Foundation and IGI India towards making this vision a reality.'

BHU VC urges univ officials to fast-track admin duties
Varanasi: Banaras Hindu University (BHU) vice-chancellor Prof Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi on Saturday urged the university officials to work towards strengthening the institution's positive perception among stakeholders by ensuring greater administrative efficiency and accountability. Addressing key officials of the central registry at a review meeting, Prof Chaturvedi emphasised the need to reduce procedural delays and foster a responsive work culture. "While we all walk an extra mile to perform our duties, we must ensure that delays or bureaucratic procedures do not impact the overall efficiency of the institution," he stated. In response, Prof Chaturvedi called for fast-tracking critical processes and setting clear timelines to achieve institutional goals. "Fast-tracking administrative duties should be a norm and not an exception," he added. He urged officers to remain committed to making the right decisions and highlighted the importance of inter-departmental coordination. National mock drill on quake, chemical hazards to be held in Gzb, GB Nagar on Aug 1
Noida: Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar have been selected from Uttar Pradesh to participate in a national-level mock drill simulating earthquake and chemical disaster scenarios on August 1. Part of the "Suraksha Chakra" initiative, the exercise is aimed at stress-testing emergency preparedness and response mechanisms across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana. The mock drill is being organised by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in collaboration with the Headquarters Western Command of the Indian Army, Headquarters Delhi Area, and the State Disaster Management Authorities of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana. It will be preceded by a four-day Integrated Disaster Management Symposium and several preparatory events across the National Capital Region from July 29 to August 1. According to Omkar Chaturvedi, district disaster expert for Gautam Buddha Nagar, the Government of India has mandated rehearsals at a minimum of five sites in each participating district prior to the August 1 drill. ADM-level officers have been appointed as nodal officers, with Chaturvedi serving as assistant nodal officer for Gautam Buddha Nagar. A preparatory meeting will be held on July 28 at 1 pm at the Collectorate Auditorium in Noida, where all departments are expected to present updates on progress and coordination. "The mock drill is not just a simulation but a stress test of our systems. Any negligence will directly reflect in how prepared we truly are," said Chaturvedi. In Ghaziabad, drills will be conducted at five sites: Ingraham Inter College, VVIP Addresses Society, HPCL Loni, District Joint Hospital, and the Modinagar Tehsil Bhawan. At a review meeting held in Ghaziabad on Saturday, Lt Gen Yogendra Dimri, vice president of the UP-State Disaster Management Authority, urged departments to approach the exercise as a real-time emergency. "There should be no panic during a disaster. The nodal officer must assess where help is needed the most and coordinate with locals, NGOs, and other support groups to mobilise manpower immediately," said Dimri. Emphasising the need for greater public awareness, he added, "When people are aware, they become part of the response mechanism, not a liability." Departments in both districts have been assigned specific roles. The NDRF and NCC will lead rescue operations; health teams will triage patients using colour-coded bands, and civic bodies will handle sanitation, drinking water supply, and debris clearance. Police, traffic, fire, and information departments will manage law and order, vehicular movement, safety, and documentation. Officials said the objective is to identify and address any gaps in the system now, before a real disaster strikes.

Palakkad railway officials to pre-commission jumbo intrusion system before July 30
COIMBATORE: As part of ensuring the safety of wild elephants, Palakkad railway officials said they have decided to pre-commission the activities of Elephant Intrusion Detection System (EIDS) in the Kottekkad-Madukkarai stretch before July 30. Kottekkad and Madukkarai share borders with Kerala and Tamil Nadu and are vulnerable to wild elephant movement. In this regard, the Palakkad Division is implementing EIDS, which is aimed at preventing elephant intrusions and enhancing the safety of wildlife and train operations. 'It integrates an optical fibre-based sensing network with artificial intelligence-driven analytical modules to detect the presence and movement of elephants in real time. Installation of the system has been completed on both A Line and B Line. At present, signal validation, fine-tuning, and systematic reduction of unconfirmed (spurious) alarms are in progress. We have targeted pre-commissioning activities for completion by July 30,' said a railway official. Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Palakkad Division, Arun Kumar Chaturvedi, inspected the ongoing implementation of the EIDS in the Kottekkad-Madukkarai stretch on Saturday. As per a release from Palakkad Railway Division, verified alerts will be relayed without delay to the station masters of stations concerned, the Divisional Control Office, Palakkad Division, level crossings between stations, and locomotive pilots via dedicated display and alert interfaces, enabling timely operational responses to avert incidents.
