Steel Haze From ‘Armored Core VI' Gets A New Model Kit This December

Forbes07-08-2025
One of the more memorable characters in Armored Core VI was Rusty, the player's 'buddy', and his initial ride of choice gets a new model kit this December.
Now, we already had the initial build of Steel Haze get the 30MM model kit treatment a while back, and the updated version of Steel Haze towards the end of the game was recently given a very nice Robot Damashii toy.
However, Kotobukiya has a long and storied history with the Armored Core series and has been making model kits of notable designs from these games for decades.
This is where this model kit comes in, as Kotobukiya is handling this new Steel Haze release.
Priced at 17,050 yen (or around $116 at the current exchange rate), it's a pricey kit, but it looks to be quite special. This is because it is part of the new Variable Infinity Overed Scale, or VIOS, line, and much bigger as a result.
To explain, the original and main line for previous Armored Core kits from Kotobukiya was the standard Variable Infinity series of kits. I bought a few over the years, and they've all been very nicely done.

This new line, though, offers bigger kits with greater detailing. For something like the initial Steel Haze design, this makes a lot of sense, as Steel Haze is a fast-moving AC and has very delicate-looking limbs.
Now, at the normal Variable Infinity scale, these parts would be understandably small and fragile, so this new scale, in theory, affords greater strength, while still maintaining the level of detail from the games.
This is where the previous and smaller 30MM kit from Bandai Spirits was more limited, and hopefully, where Kotobukiya can really shine.
Released this December, you can pre-order this upcoming Steel Haze kit from places such as HobbyLink Japan. In the meantime, check out the video below to see the first time you meet your 'buddy' in Armored Core VI.

Valiant's Bloodshot Relaunch Mired by Transphobic Dogwhistles

Earlier this week, comic book publisher Valiant continued its recent 'Beyond' reboot with Bloodshot #1. Shortly after its release, readers noted the comic—written by Mauro Mantella with art by Fernando Heinz Furukawa—contained narration that felt like a pointed jab at transgender people. In the panels below from the issue, Bloodshot muses about his struggles against vampires and how the Yakuza have worked with the local government to 'normalize blood consumption, and that's messing with the minds of the younger ones. […] There are kids who want to be bitten to become vampires because their favorite influencer says they're one. And parents who force their children into that irreversible change just to feel modern, and believing that they'll be thankful for it when they grow up.' The character's inner thoughts aren't that dissimilar to how transphobic people seem to think people begin to question their gender identity—the idea that trans people do it for kicks, or that they've been led astray by a particular person online who's spreading the message, particularly when it comes to kids. This thinking and desire to 'protect our children' is what's led to so many anti-trans laws in the United States that prevent gender-affirming care, erase transgender people from American culture, and generally try to ensure that they are not allowed to exist in day-to-day public life or are put into incredibly dangerous and life-threatening situations. Comics industry workers soon decried Bloodshot, leading to co-publisher Alien Books and Mantella's apology 'for the harm caused by the phrasing in [the comic]. While the story takes place in a fictional world of vampires and cults, we understand that a specific line of dialogue has been read as alluding to real-world issues, specifically, the discrimination faced by trans people.' 'That was never the intention,' it continues. 'The original line was written by an Argentinian creator and was unfortunately a case of nuance being lost in translation. We fully recognize that intent does not erase impact, especially when dealing with subject matter that affects real lives and communities.' An Update from Alien Books. [image or embed] — Alien Books (@ August 15, 2025 at 4:52 PMAlien will change the dialogue in the book's digital and collected editions and vowed to give scripts a 'more intense review by our proof readers.' But the apology itself was undermined by pinning the blame on nuance being 'lost in translation,' as many pointed out Mantella himself is a professional translator and has worked with U.S.-based comic publishers before, including DC Comics. Compounding the issue further is that Mantella's social media history is ridden with instances of him sharing right-wing and particularly anti-LGBTQ views. At the time of writing, several posts and shares from Mantella's online presence have been found, either still on his accounts or since deleted after they were recirculated online in the last few days, including previously retweeted jokes from an anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ+ Twitter account, similar memes espousing COVID-19 and vaccine denialism, as well as conspiracy theories surrounding Ukraine during its years-long war with Russia. io9 has reached out to Alien for comment regarding Mantello's past social media behavior and will update when, or if, a response is given. PETA Urges Nintendo to Remove ‘Mario Kart World' Cow's Nose Ring: ‘It's-a Mean!'

Animal-rights advocacy group PETA wants Nintendo to remove the brass nose ring from Cow, the joyful anthropomorphic vehicle-driving character in the recently released top-selling game 'Mario Kart World.' Yes, really. PETA this week launched a campaign to urge the Japanese game maker to redesign the Cow character 'without the nose ring — a painful reminder of the cruelty cows endure in the meat and dairy industries.' More from Variety Nintendo's Switch 2 Sales Near 6 Million 'Legend of Zelda' Live-Action Movie Casts Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Zelda and Link With the Release of the Nintendo Switch 2, the Nintendo Switch 1 OLED Is on Sale Online 'The brass ring in Cow's nose glosses over real-world violence and cruelty to animals. That's why we're asking you to give this beloved bovine a small but meaningful upgrade: Remove the nose ring and let Cow race freely — without any painful reminders of the industries that treat animals like profit-making machines,' Joel Bartlett, PETA's SVP of marketing engagement, wrote in a letter addressed to Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, which the group posted on its website. He added, 'leave the rings to Sonic and let Cow breathe free!' Reps for Nintendo of America did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 'Mario Kart World' was released June 5, 2025, as a launch game for the Nintendo Switch 2. As of June 30, the company had sold 5.63 million copies, according to Nintendo, making it the best-selling title for the new console. In the game, 24 players compete against each other to see who can zoom through open-world racetracks the fastest. Online commenters have pointed out that it's possible — in the context of the 'Mario Kart World' universe — that Cow chose to get the nose ring herself. 'How do they know the cow didn't go to a body piercing place to get it? The damn thing knows how to drive so it's not completely… ordinary,' an X user posted Friday about the issue. According to PETA, in a press release about Cow's nose ring that said 'It's-a mean!', the cattle industry uses nose rings as a tool of torment, not a fashion accessory: 'Nose rings are used by the meat and dairy industries to exploit, control and even drag animals to their deaths. These brass rings are crudely stabbed through the sensitive septum of cows and bulls, which can cause lasting pain and discomfort.' It's not the first time PETA has targeted Nintendo. For example, the advocacy group in 2020 criticized the game giant's 'Animal Crossing: New Horizons' for 'encouraging abusive behavior toward fish and insects, where players can tear wildlife out of their homes and display them in cramped cases in a museum.' And in 2017, PETA said Nintendo had 'sold its soul' by partnering with McDonald's to include 'Super Mario' toys in Happy Meals. 'Nintendo should stay in the business of selling creative video games, not cruel and unhealthy chicken nuggets,' the group said at the time.
