When
Mark Scheifele
of the Winnipeg Jets stepped onto the ice for Game 6 against the Dallas Stars, he carried more than the pressure of playoff elimination as he was skating in memory of his father,
Brad Scheifele
, who had passed away just a few hours before.
As the hockey world mourned with him, something remarkable happened: fans, both in Winnipeg and Dallas, launched a fundraising wave that turned grief into generosity.

What began as a heartfelt gesture by hockey fans quickly turned into a powerful display of support and generosity. In the wake of Brad Scheifele's passing—father of Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele—fans from across the NHL community came together to launch the '$55 for 55' campaign, raising over $100,000 for youth charities supported by the star forward.
The campaign was sparked just before Game 6 of the Western Conference Second Round, after news broke that Brad Scheifele had passed away. Despite the personal loss, Mark Scheifele took to the ice and scored the Jets' only goal in a 2-1 loss to the Dallas Stars, which ultimately ended Winnipeg's playoff run. What followed off the ice, however, was far more impactful.
The '$55 for 55' initiative—a nod to Scheifele's jersey number—gained momentum among fans of both the Jets and Stars.

Supporters began donating $55 each to the True North Youth Foundation and KidSport Canada, two organizations close to Scheifele's heart. According to the foundation, the donations have already surpassed $80,000 for its programs, which include the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Academy, Project 11, and Camp Manitou.
KidSport Canada received an additional $30,000 to help support underprivileged youth in sport.

How Nate Schmidt and Gustav Forsling have flourished in the Florida Panthers' system

Image Via Getty In South Florida, an unofficial haven is being created in the NHL for defensemen looking to regain confidence. For Schmidt, the opportunity to blend into the newly formed Florida Panthers lineup was, in some ways, a release. Schmidt is not alone herein this the seasoned Gustav Forsling, with Dmitry Kulikov and others, could equally attest that theirs is a defense-oriented culture of the Panthers. The underlying factor behind this phenomenon is the coaching intervention of Paul Maurice and Sylvain Lefebvre, an environment that values experience, is liberating in its structure, and encourages the player to retain his individuality. Paul Maurice-Sylvain Lefebvre's way of turning defensive veterans into gems Unlike many teams in the NHL that stick players in rigid roles, the Panthers have created a definition of defensive excellence that honors a player's right to simply be himself, with structure imposed, never suffocation. Confidence in assistant coach Sylvain Lefebvre is the cornerstone of Paul Maurice's philosophy. A Stanley Cup champion, Lefebvre brought to his coaching the player perspective from knowing the grind from both behind the bench and on the ice. Small matters of defense contributed by Lefebvre—stick positioning, aggression at the blue line, net-front coverage—have provided an adjustment for both rookies and the likes of Seth Jones. According to Jones himself, ever since the trade out of Chicago in March, he says that daily video sessions with Lefebvre and his patient approach helped him tweak certain things in his game that Jones himself neglected to work on for the longest of times. Nate Schmidt, previously guided by Maurice in Winnipeg, has found his groove once again in Florida. The tandem of coaches is given credit for letting Schmidt play his natural game without putting any unnecessary constraints on him. Gustav Forsling and Dmitry Kulikov, both of whom played very important roles in Florida's trip to the 2023 Stanley Cup, echoed such sentiments. It's not about regenerating players; it's about reminding them of their former selves at their best. Even Zito, the Panthers' GM, admits that defensemen almost always improve after arriving in Florida. There is an environment of togetherness, not competition, and Maurice does not micromanage the blue line because he trusts Lefebvre. Those same expectations have trickled down to the players. While Aaron Ekblad, the No. 1 pick of 2014, is considered local talent, the defensive unit otherwise does not consist of homegrown players, yet this unit operates as one. This system welcomes players on board with ease due to the fact that its foundation is egalitarian in terms of accommodating various styles of play; it favors speed and aggression. With Paul Maurice and Sylvain Lefebvre paying close attention to every detail, players like Nate Schmidt, Gustav Forsling, and Dmitry Kulikov aren't just fitting in; they are thriving.

Jack Adams Award triumph: Spencer Carbery made history

Image Via Twitter (Jack Adams Award Triumph:Spencer Carbery Made History) In an unprecedented milestone for NHL coaching, Spencer Carbery became the first person to be conferred with coach of the year honors in the NHL, AHL, and ECHL. If Carbery's tremendous turnaround of the Washington Capitals grabbed the headlines, then Carbery's strategic brilliance runs much deeper. From pulling off one of the biggest league-wide seasonal turnarounds to nurturing fresh-faced talent, Carbery's march to the 2024–25 Jack Adams Award has been a heavy-hitter in transformation. Spencer Carbery's complete coaching triumph and the Capitals' turnaround Spencer Carbery's sophomore year behind the Washington Capitals bench was nothing short of brilliant. The 43-year-old coach led his team to being first in both the Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference while managing a staggering 20-point improvement over the previous season. The 2024–25 season saw Washington pile up 51 wins and 111 points, good enough for the fourth-best in franchise history in terms of total points, behind Presidents' Trophy seasons. To assess Carbery's impact, let us observe the offensive and defensive rankings of the Washington team. The Capitals skyrocketed from 28th in goals per game to 2nd, 3.49 being the average this season. Likewise, their goals-against also rose in stature to the top 10 of the league defensively. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Combining these measures places the Capitals in an exclusive club of seven teams to have a top-10 ranking in both scoring and preventing goals- a rare balance that speaks volumes about Carbery's coaching. Beyond the schematics, Carbery took over a transitioning club with seven new players on the opening night roster. The importance of having the group gel quickly can hardly be overstated. Nine players equaled or surpassed a career high in points, including Pierre-Luc Dubois (66 points), Jakob Chychrun (47 points), and Brandon Duhaime (21 points). This underlying excellence in performance is testimony enough to the coach's ability to get the best out of his veterans and youngsters alike. The influence went into the very grain of the nexus of critical moments in the game. Leading the league in comeback wins (25) and being tied for second on road wins were both markers of a tough team with strong mental preparation. All this set a backdrop of consistency, a +56 goal differential (amongst the highest) in the NHL, and a very effective penalty-kill, ranked fourth. Also Read: Jack Adams Award finalists Arniel, St. Louis, and Carbery transform NHL coaching landscape Winning the Jack Adams Award for his work in the 2022/23 NHL season was Carbery's achievement, but also a recognition of a star year that altered the fortunes of the Washington Capitals. Carbery's rare distinction of having coaching accolades from all three North American professional leagues makes him one of the most adaptable and forward-thinking minds in the modern era of hockey.
