Ripple acquires new surprising stablecoin platform
Ripple has agreed to acquire Rail, a stablecoin platform for global payments, for $200 million, the crypto payments firm said on Aug. 7.
The fintech firm is one of the leading players in the global stablecoin market that issues RLUSD, a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar.
'Stablecoins are quickly becoming a cornerstone of modern finance, and with Rail, we are uniquely positioned to drive the next phase of innovation and adoption of stablecoins and blockchain in global payments,' said Ripple President Monica Long.Backed by Galaxy Ventures and Accomplice, Toronto-based Rail has partnered with more than 12 banks to offer seamless service to its clients.
Rail CEO Bhanu Kohli said, 'Over the last four years, Rail built the fastest way to settle business payments internationally using stablecoins, and in 2025, Rail is forecasted to process over 10% of the $36B global B2B stablecoin payments. Ripple shares our vision, and together, we're excited to bring our innovation to the millions of businesses that move money internationally.'
Ripple launched RLUSD in December 2024, and President Donald Trump signed the GENIUS Act into law in mid-July 2025 in order to regulate USD-pegged stablecoins and consolidate the global dominance of the U.S. dollar.
With a market cap of $612 million, RLUSD doesn't account for even 1% of the total stablecoin market that is worth nearly $270 billion at the time of writing. Expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025, the deal would pave the way for Ripple to penetrate the stablecoin market further.

Ethereum Cracks $4,000 for First Time in 8 Months
Ethereum's price touched $4,000 per coin on Friday for the first time since last December on a number of top exchanges, as transactions on the blockchain surged amid a more favorable environment for the asset and wider crypto markets. The second biggest digital coin in existence was recently trading just below that level, according to crypto data provider CoinGecko, after jumping 4% over a 24-hour period. It hit the $4,000 mark at about 9 a.m. New York time on America's biggest crypto exchange Coinbase. The gains far outplaced Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency by market value, which was up just a few ticks of a percentage point from Thursday, same time, to trade at about $116,600. But it fell short of XRP's 7.6% gains. Solana and other major altcoins were more modestly in the green. The coin is still 18% below its all-time high of $4,878 that it hit in 2021. But over a 30-day period, the coin has rallied by over 50% over a 30-day period as Ethereum treasuries have mushroomed. Peter Thiel-backed Bitcoin miner BitMine Immersion and marketing firm SharpLink Gaming have accumulated $2.9 billion and $1.9 billion of ETH respectively since embarking on this strategy and are intent on adding more to their holdings. These Ethereum treasuries are following a model pioneered by Strategy—formerly MicroStrategy—which shifted from software development to buying Bitcoin in 2020 after years of struggling and low share prices. Strategy now holds 628,791 BTC worth over $72 billion. Ethereum Treasury SharpLink Adds $265 Million in ETH to Holdings Trading activity on the Ethereum network has also risen amid increased staking as investors have grown more upbeat about its potential uses but also from recent regulatory decisions that have been favorable to the crypto industry. A Myriad Linea Markets table showed that 76% of participants believed that Ethereum transactions would exceed 12 million for the week-long period ending August 10. Meanwhile, U.S. investors piled into ETH exchange-traded funds. Those funds have generated more than $9.3 billion in net inflows since their debut last year, according to U.K. asset manager Farside Investors.

Trump aiming for IPOs of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac this year, WSJ reports
(Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump's administration is preparing for the initial public offerings of mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac later this year, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. The plans under discussion could value the companies at roughly $500 billion or more combined, and could fetch $30 billion for the administration, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. The companies did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Fannie and Freddie have been under federal conservatorship since 2008 following the financial crisis, during which both entities became insolvent amid the subprime mortgage meltdown. Exiting conservatorship would mark a key milestone for the companies, which were created by the Congress to support the housing market by ensuring affordable mortgage financing, but crumbled after being severely bruised during the financial crisis. They were bailed out with taxpayer funds, and the Treasury received preferred shares in return, which paid billions of dollars in dividend over the years. Over the years, efforts to return them to private control have continued, including under Trump's first term. Trump also met the CEOs of Citigroup and Bank of America earlier this week to discuss the administration's plans to privatize the mortgage giants, Reuters had reported earlier. Fannie's shares, which trade over-the-counter, rose 20%. Freddie climbed 15%.
