Indonesia confirms US warship's passage through Straits of Melaka
JAKARTA: Indonesia's military said Saturday that the United States (US) aircraft carrier USS Nimitz was transiting the Straits of Melaka in line with international maritime law when it was last detected last week.
The vessel was travelling from the South China Sea to the Indian Ocean via the Singapore Strait and the Straits of Melaka, the Indonesian Armed Forces Information Centre (Puspen TNI) said.
"The ship was exercising its right of transit passage under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)," the centre's head, Major General Kristomei Sianturi, stated in a statement.
He noted that the convention allows foreign warships to pass through international straits without prior notification, provided they do not pose a threat to the security of coastal states.
The statement came in response to public concern after a video showing the vessel near Aceh province on June 17 circulated widely on local social media, amid rising tensions in the Middle East involving Israel and Iran.
According to the Indonesian navy, the USS Nimitz was last detected with its automatic identification system (AIS) active in waters north of Belawan, near Medan in North Sumatra, on Tuesday.

Workshop in Melaka passes on keroncong legacy to younger generation
TRADITIONAL music enthusiasts from Melaka's Peranakan Chinese community are working to preserve the cultural heritage of keroncong through workshops for students. Organising chairman Daniel Ang Yam Seng said 80 students and teachers from 16 secondary schools here participated in the recent inaugural workshop. 'The aim is to get more young people to appreciate traditional music and ensure that these music genres are preserved in the future,' he said on Friday (June 20). Ang said the workshop also had the support of several government departments. He said participants were introduced to vocal performances and musical instruments associated with Keroncong. 'Similar workshops will be continued in the future with the first one receiving overwhelming response,' he added. Ang noted that keroncong holds a special place in the local cultural landscape and community-led initiatives like this are seen as vital in passing down this legacy to the younger generation. Keroncong refers to both a small ukulele-like instrument and a traditional Indonesian musical style. The term is thought to come from the 'chrong-chrong-chrong' sound produced when the instrument is strummed, and the tones heard when multiple instruments are played together. A typical keroncong ensemble features a vocalist accompanied by an orchestra comprising flute, violin, two ukuleles, cello, double bass, and guitar. Keroncong music is believed to have originated in the 16th century when Portuguese sailors brought European instruments and musical styles to Indonesia.

Advertisement The email at 07:30 am (0030 GMT) contained a threat to 'blow up' Saudia Airlines flight SV 5276 which was flying from the Saudi city of Jeddah to the Indonesian capital Jakarta, it said in a statement. After 10:00 am the pilot diverted the plane from its destination of Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to Kualanamu International Airport in Medan, a city on Sumatra island in western Indonesia. The flight was carrying 442 hajj pilgrims, including 207 men and 235 women, it added. 'Upon identifying security and safety threats, the pilot decided to divert the landing to the nearest airport,' said InJourney Airports, Indonesia's airport operator. A transport ministry official told AFP the plane was still in Medan and Flightradar24 showed the plane there.
