Dewald Brevis' 41-ball hundred makes AB de Villiers remind IPL teams of CSK's masterstroke; ‘The boy can play'

Koushik Paul Published 12 Aug 2025, 06:14 PM IST Dewald Brevis of South Africa bats during second T20I against Australia.(AP) Former South African captain AB de Villiers reminded nine other Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises of Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) masterstroke after Dewald Brevis smashed an unbeaten maiden T20I hundred on Tuesday against Australia. After South Africa lost the opening game by 17 runs, Brevis' 56-ball 125 not out made sure the Proteas reach their highest-ever T20I total against the Australians in Darwin.

Who is Nqaba Peter? Young SA wrist-spinner tipped as Tahir's successor

Nqabayomzi 'Nqaba' Peter is a promising 22-year-old wrist-spinner who has rapidly climbed South Africa's cricketing ranks despite limited experience in the longer formats. Peter was seen playing for the Proteas during the 2nd T20I encounter against Australia and even took a brilliant catch to dismiss Cameron Green as Maphaka's first over on the brought his team's 2nd wicket in the powerplay on the night. Peter got a surprise inclusion in the ODI squad for the series against Afghanistan last year as he raised eyebrows with just four List A wickets to his name at the time. His selection, however, reflected South Africa's urgent need to groom the next generation of wrist-spinners as veterans Tabraiz Shamsi and Imran Tahir near the end of their international careers. Peter's debut vs WI Peter made his international debut in May, 2024 during the T20I series against West Indies, where he impressed with a 2-32 spell on debut. Though he struggled in his second match and in a subsequent 'A' tour to Sri Lanka, his T20 credentials remain solid. He was the second-highest wicket-taker in the 2024 CSA T20 Challenge, grabbing 20 wickets in 10 games at an economy of 5.84. His match-winning 4-18 in the semi-final against Northerns showcased his potential under pressure. With a unique high-arm action that generates bounce and pace, Peter's bowling style evokes comparisons to Imran Tahir. Recently picked for the white-ball tour of Australia, he has made an appearance in the 2nd T20I. However, the youngster didn't have a good start to his night as Tim David smashed him all across the park as he gave 19 runs in his first over on the night. Despite the beating he took, South Africa clearly sees him as a long-term investment and will give him more chances as he progresses.

125 not out in 56 balls! 'Baby AB' Dewald Brevis steals the show during AUS vs SA 2nd T20I

Dewald Brevis (Photo by) South Africa batter Dewald Brevis lit up the 2nd T20I between South Africa and Australia with a breathtaking unbeaten 125 off just 56 balls, steering the Proteas to 218/7 in Brisbane and becoming the second-quickest T20I hundred from a South African player. Nicknamed 'Baby AB' for his striking resemblance to AB de Villiers ' batting style, the 22-year-old showcased a full range of strokes, from scoops and ramps to brutal straight hits, dismantling the Australian attack with a strike rate of 223. Brevis' innings wasn't just about raw power. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! His shot selection and composure reflected the influence of his mentor, AB de Villiers, who has been guiding him since his teenage years. Watch: Like his idol, Brevis grew up near SuperSport Park, attended the same high school (Affies), and was coached by the same mentor, Deon Botes. He's been hailed for his adaptability, an ability he says comes from 'keeping it simple' and 'playing the natural game.' While his batting stole headlines, Brevis is also a handy leg-spinner, inspired by Shane Warne , and has already taken wickets in the series. His all-round skills, coupled with a fearless approach, make him one of the brightest young prospects in world cricket. The 2nd T20I was a reminder of why fans call him 'Baby AB', not as a shadow of de Villiers, but as a rising star writing his own chapter. If this knock is a sign of things to come, Brevis might soon be a household name across formats, and perhaps in the IPL, where he dreams of playing for RCB alongside Virat Kohli .
