1920: The League of Women Voters was founded in Chicago; its first president was Maud Wood Park.
1929: Seven men, suspected to be members of George 'Bugs' Moran's gang, were lined up against the wall of a garage on Clark Street, the gang's headquarters, and killed by rivals' machine guns in what became known as the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.
It became the most infamous of all gangland slayings in America, and it savagely achieved its purpose — the elimination of the last challenge to Al Capone for the mantle of crime boss in Chicago.
1951: 'St. Valentine's Day Massacre II.' Sugar Ray Robinson won the middleweight championship from 'Raging Bull' Jake LaMotta on a 13th-round TKO at Chicago Stadium. LaMotta, who had never been knocked down, preserved that record.
LaMotta won only one of his six fights with Robinson and once observed, 'I fought Sugar Ray so many times it's a wonder I didn't get diabetes.'
1980: City firefighters went on strike for the first and only time as the department's first female recruit — Lauren Howard — began her career.
1990: Snow began falling in the early afternoon and quickly increased in intensity, with visibility dropping to near zero. It peaked during the evening commute as northeast winds reached more than 20 mph.
Normal one-hour commutes turned into ordeals lasting hours longer. O'Hare airport closed at 7:30 p.m. after a jet slid off a runway while attempting departure.
Mayor Richard M. Daley received criticism after the 10-inch snowfall was met with a slow response by the city's snow removal crews.
'I don't think this is going to cost me my job,' Daley said, adding, 'I'm not going to run and hide. I'm the mayor of Chicago, and I accept responsibility.'

2008: A former student dressed in black walked onto the stage of a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University and opened fire on a packed class; Steven Kazmierczak killed five students before committing suicide.

Southeast China on Alert as Tropical Storm Podul Makes Landfall Amid Torrential Rain
Torrential rain swept southeastern China on Thursday after tropical storm Podul made landfall in Fujian, prompting a blue typhoon warning and black-rain closures in Hong Kong and Macao. China's National Meteorological Center said Podul—or Typhoon No. 11, Yangliu—came ashore around 12:30 a.m. local time on the southern coast of Fujian, with maximum winds near its center of Force 11 (about 67 mph).

After closing for most of the summer, Pinehurst No. 4 is back with all new greens
A rough winter in North Carolina produced issues with the greens on Pinehurst Resort's No. 4 course that forced a truly painful decision for those associated with the famous complex — closing the entire course for much of the summer. Originally a Donald Ross design that opened in 1919, the layout for No. 4 was renovated extensively over the years, most recently in 2018 by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner. It has since been used as one of the courses during the 2019 U.S. Amateur and in the top-tier North & South Amateur. No. 4 is ranked third on Golfweek's Best ranking of top public-access courses in North Carolina, trailing only the No. 2 and new No. 10 courses. The No. 4 course ranks 97th on the list of top modern courses in the United States, and it ties for 29th on the ranking of top resort courses in the United States. The course closed in mid-May so that the process could begin and reopened for play last week. The Ultradwarf Bermuda greens have been in rough shape, but resort operators had been told they should recover as spring warmed up the courses and promoted the growth of the grass. That didn't happen as hoped, so the resort made the difficult decision to close the course instead of sending out golfers to play with less-than-stellar conditions. Matt Barksdale, the vice president of golf at Pinehurst Resort, said the process was an arduous one. "To be able to execute stripping 18 greens, then laying 18 greens is not necessarily an easy task," he said. "It's not just ripping up the grass and putting grass back down. We ended up going down to the base layer. We updated all the drainage on all the greens. We put a gravel layer and a sand layer, plus the mix layer. "And then, on top of that, made sure that Gil signed off on all of the contours for the greens." Pinehurst Resort currently is home to 10 full-sized layouts, including the famed No. 2 that has hosted several U.S. Opens in recent decades and the new No. 10 designed by Tom Doak that opened last year. It was announced that architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw will build the new No. 11 course for the resort.

Typhoon Podul hits island off Taiwan's east coast, strong winds, rain

Typhoon Podul hit Taiwan's sparsely populated southeast coast on Wednesday, packing winds of up to 191 kph (118 mph), as a large swathe of southern and eastern parts of the island shut down and hundreds of flights were cancelled. Taiwan is regularly hit by typhoons, generally along its mountainous east coast facing the Pacific.
