LMC to carry out ‘Tirangayatra' to boost cleanliness

Time of Indiaa day ago
Lucknow: To express gratitude towards the residents and boost awareness about cleanliness, Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) is gearing up to conduct a 'Tiranga yatra' (tricolor parade) in every ward across the city.
The initiative, announced by Mayor Sushma Kharkwal, aims not only to thank the people for their efforts, but also to galvanise the city towards achieving an even higher ranking in next year's Swachh Survekshan cleanliness survey.
The announcement was made on Sunday during a felicitation ceremony held at the LMC headquarters, where corporators were honoured for their collective role in helping Lucknow secure an impressive third place in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 national cleanliness survey.
The upcoming parade will increase community participation and inspire all city wards to keep up their hard work for a cleaner, greener Lucknow.
The event held at Trilok Nath Hall witnessed the mayor presenting ceremonial shawls to all 110 corporators as a token of appreciation for their efforts. The ceremony was attended by several LMC officials, including deputy chairman Girish Gupta, deputy leader of the corporators' group Sushil Tiwari 'Pammi', Samajwadi Party corporators' group leader Kamran Baig, municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar, additional commissioner Namrata Singh, Arvind Kumar Rao, chief engineer (civil) Mahesh Verma, chief engineer (RR) Manoj Prabhat, along with many other staff members.

Addressing the gathering, the mayor thanked both the corporators and city residents, emphasising that the achievement was a result of everyone's collective hard work and involvement. "This result comes from everyone's dedication and active participation. We are third in the country this year, but our target is to be number one. I urge all corporators to keep running strong cleanliness campaigns in their wards," she said.
Kharkwal shared details of the 'Tiranga yatra', explaining that all corporators and municipal employees will be part of the parade in each ward. The goal is to thank the public and again underline the importance of cleanliness for Lucknow's future.
There are also plans to honour the city's sanitation workers at an event, which may be attended by defence minister Rajnath Singh and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, depending on their availability.

Citizens' initiative restores Tollygunge Ghari Ghar heritage gateway

1 2 3 4 Kolkata: Kolkata Restorers, a collective of citizens who love the city and its heritage, have restored the Tollygunge Ghari Ghar, a Grade I heritage structure off Deshpran Sasmal Road near the Tipu Sultan mosque. Constructed around 1877 by Prince Raheemuddin Shah, a great-grandson of Tipu Sultan, the gateway once supported a large clock on top, hence the local name Ghari Ghar. The archway serves as an entrance to the imambara inside the lane. The gateway features Tuscan-style columns and inscriptions in Nastaliq Urdu and Bengali. "This is more than just a gateway; it is a historical marker of Tipu Sultan's lineage, a centre of Shia ritual life, and a testament to colonial-era architecture," said architect Anjan Mitra, who was advised on how the restoration should be done. The marble plaques on the gate were cleaned, and the archway was illuminated. Kolkata-based company Techno Electric funded the entire cost of restoration. The translation of the Nastaliq script carries the following interpretation: "This graceful tower, crowned with a noble arch, has been raised as a place of beauty and reflection — worthy of reverence, like a place of prayer. "The tower is a royal memorial, constructed by a descendant of one of the subcontinent's most revered freedom fighters — Tipu Sultan, the martyr and protector of his people," said Mudar Patherya, who has coordinated the Kolkata Restorers initiative. "Its creator, Sayyid Mohamed Raheemuddin, was the son of Abdul Rahman, grandson of Abdus Salam, and great-grandson of Tipu Sultan. Through this structure, he preserved a legacy of dignity, courage, and devotion to heritage. This tower was erected in 1877. The arch offers a rare glimpse into Kolkata's 19th century Muslim aristocracy and how local landmarks retain lived memory," he added.

Swachh Survekshan 2024-25: Puttur CMC bags eighth rank in Karnataka

The Puttur City Municipal Council (CMC) in Dakshina Kannada has secured eighth rank in Karnataka in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Referring to the Puttur CMC, which has been ranked among the top 10 urban local bodies (ULBs) in the State, its Commissioner, Madhu S. Manohar, told The Hindu: 'The achievement is the outcome of a holistic, innovative, and people-centric approach to solid waste and sanitation management.' He stated that the city achieved 100% door-to-door waste collection and strengthened source segregation at the household level, enabling effective processing and reducing the landfill burden. A key innovation was the successful generation of Bio-CNG from wet waste, converting organic waste into clean energy. Another sustainable initiative was recycling single-use plastics into plastic lumps, which are now being used to manufacture irrigation pipes, promoting the circular economy and resource reuse. In sanitation, Puttur significantly improved the cleanliness and maintenance of public and community toilets, and installed sanitary napkin vending machines and incinerators in women's toilets to enhance menstrual hygiene management, he said. The commissioner stated that the city has also implemented a structured e-waste collection system, encouraging citizens to safely dispose of electronic waste through designated drop-off points, thereby preventing environmental harm. 'These advancements were supported by robust IEC campaigns, school and community engagement, and efficient use of grievance redressal platforms like the Swachhata App, resulting in high levels of positive citizen feedback. The combined efforts of municipal staff, sanitation workers, elected representatives, and committed leadership have transformed Puttur into a model of urban cleanliness and sustainable waste management,' Mr. Manohar said. It is worth mentioning that Puttur CMC has been converting wet waste into Bio-Compressed Natural Gas (BioCNG) through a private partnership for the past year. The BioCNG is being used to operate six municipal vehicles. The BioCNG is produced by Krishna Muliya Green Energy LLP at a plant in Bannur. The plant was established by the LLP under the Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) model on civic land. The plant is financed and operated by the LLP. The firm will have to hand over the plant to the municipality after 40 years. Meanwhile, Mangaluru City Corporation has bagged 25th rank and Udupi City Municipal Council 48th rank in Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 among ULBs in Karnataka. President Droupadi Murmu conferred Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 Awards in Delhi on July 17.
