Citizens' initiative restores Tollygunge Ghari Ghar heritage gateway

Kolkata: Kolkata Restorers, a collective of citizens who love the city and its heritage, have restored the Tollygunge Ghari Ghar, a Grade I heritage structure off Deshpran Sasmal Road near the Tipu Sultan mosque.
Constructed around 1877 by Prince Raheemuddin Shah, a great-grandson of Tipu Sultan, the gateway once supported a large clock on top, hence the local name Ghari Ghar. The archway serves as an entrance to the imambara inside the lane.
The gateway features Tuscan-style columns and inscriptions in Nastaliq Urdu and Bengali. "This is more than just a gateway; it is a historical marker of Tipu Sultan's lineage, a centre of Shia ritual life, and a testament to colonial-era architecture," said architect Anjan Mitra, who was advised on how the restoration should be done.

After taking permission from the Wakf trustees led by Humayun Mirza, a descendant of Tipu Sultan as well as Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the cracks were repaired and the structure was given lime paint. The marble plaques on the gate were cleaned, and the archway was illuminated. Kolkata-based company Techno Electric funded the entire cost of restoration.
The translation of the Nastaliq script carries the following interpretation: "This graceful tower, crowned with a noble arch, has been raised as a place of beauty and reflection — worthy of reverence, like a place of prayer.

Konkani Text Corpus project launched to preserve language online
Mangaluru: In order to treasure the original language and ensure its presence on the digital platform, the World Konkani Centre, Shaktinagar, is undertaking the Konkani Text Corpus Project. The project, which is already underway and is likely to be completed within a few months, aims to add 2,000 small sample write-ups of 100 words each in GSB Konkani, along with equivalent translations in English. It will be available online, accessible from anywhere in the world. B Devadas Pai, coordinator of the project, explained the need to go digital with the Konkani Text Corpus. He said that before Portuguese rule began in Goa, Konkani was the spoken language of those who migrated southwards. Over the past five to six centuries, it has been losing its linguistic documentation. As a result, the GSB Konkani people here have been distancing themselves from the Konkani of Goa. This unique dialect is considered the original form of Konkani, closely related to Prakrit. The World Konkani Centre is now actively working in this direction and has undertaken a project to prepare a large-scale text corpus. "We have selected an age group above 40 to 60 years for the project, who will write and provide the sample text. The exercise will provide us with Konkani sentences as well as a large vocabulary collection and help to preserve the language," he said. To carry out the project, selected individuals from various parts of undivided Dakshina Kannada, including Konkani graduates, postgraduates, and literature enthusiasts, have been trained over several rounds to prepare 100-word articles from various fields. Each article will have a headline with at least four words, ensuring it is easily available while browsing. These writings will be in the Devanagari script registered with the UGC, accompanied by an English translation. Nandagopal Shenoy, the president of the World Konkani Centre, has taken a special interest in this initiative, according to Pai. The corpus will assist in studying which words are most frequently used in the language, collected from various sources. 1,855 trees cut without permission in Mohali: DFO to NGT
Mohali: The district forest officer (DFO) has informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that 1,855 trees were cut in Mohali area without mandatory permission. He informed that this happened outside the jurisdiction of the forest department and the land in question was not classified as forest land. In a written reply submitted to the NGT, DFO Kanwar Deep Singh clarified that the land where the felling occurred falls under a non-forest category, and thus, the forest department had no authority to regulate or prevent cutting of trees on it. "The forest department does not have jurisdiction over the said land since it is not a forest area," stated the DFO. The issue came to light in the wake of a petition filed by the Environment Protection Society, through its president, Harbhajan Singh Minhas and Save My Trees Foundation coordinator, Daljit Singh. The complaint raised serious environmental concerns over large-scale felling of trees in the district. According to the DFO's report, although the department was asked to assess the trees on non-forest land, permission for felling of trees was not granted. "It was clearly mentioned in our correspondence that the assessment does not constitute special permission or a No Objection Certificate (NoC). He proposed that this amount may be imposed as environmental compensation under the Environmental Protection Act, 1986. However, he noted that enforcement of environmental compensation lies within the purview of the Punjab State Pollution Control Board or the department of environment, not the forest department. "As provisions related to environmental compensation fall under the Environment Protection Act, the agency concerned may be directed to take necessary steps," the DFO stated. In a strong recommendation for environmental restoration, the forest department has suggested planting 10 times the number of saplings in place of the cut trees. "To ensure environmental protection and prevent pollution, we advise that 18,550 tree saplings be planted. These can be procured from forest department nurseries," said the DFO. The matter now rests with the NGT and environmental authorities, with further directions awaited on compensatory measures and accountability of agencies involved in the unauthorised tree felling. Integrated BEd-MEd admission forms to be available online from today: Dept
1 2 Bhubaneswar: The higher education department on Sunday announced that application forms for admission into three-year integrated BEd-MEd course in state public universities will be available online from Monday, and classes will commence on Sept 8. There are 200 seats available for the course in four state public universities (50 seats each). While Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanja Deo University, Baripada, runs the course in regular mode, Sambalpur University, Rajendra University, Balangir, and Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, offer the subject in self-financing mode. According to the guidelines, provisional allotment of seats will be prepared through a centralised selection process based on career marks and reservation. An entrance exam will not be held. Applicants who passed their post-graduate exam in science/social science and humanities from a recognised institute shall be eligible for admission into the integrated BEd-MEd course. Applicants can select a minimum of one and a maximum of four options based on their preferences, the guidelines stated. The admission process will consist of three rounds of selection.
