Prayer rooms causing tensions in Quebec colleges, new government report says

CTV News27-06-2025
Quebec Premier Francois Legault said the report of prayer rooms at Dawson College is 'worrying.'
A new report from the Quebec government says prayer rooms are fuelling a climate of radicalization and mistrust in the province's junior colleges.
The report questions the relevance of prayer rooms in public colleges and says they make it harder for students to get along.
The document is the result of an investigation of two English-language junior colleges in Montreal, launched last November following complaints that the conflict in the Middle East had created an unsafe climate on campus.
Higher Education Minister Pascale Déry says the report highlights a series of failings and says the government could take further action.
The report finds that some student groups are causing tensions between students, and that the colleges lack the power to intervene.
It also recommends that the government adopt a new law to regulate academic freedom in the college system.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 27, 2025.

Two candidates vying to be next Tłı̨chǫ grand chief

The Tłı̨chǫ grand chief election on Sept. 29 will see incumbent Jackson Lafferty face off against Clifford Daniels, the former chief of Behchokǫ̀, N.W.T. A statement from the Tłı̨chǫ government issued Friday says this will be the seventh grand chief election. Lafferty, a former MLA, cabinet minister and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, has served as Tłı̨chǫ grand chief since 2021, when he defeated then-incumbent George Mackenzie and challenger Eddie Erasmus. Daniels served as chief in Behchokǫ̀ for 16 years until he lost in June to current Chief Bertha Rabesca Zoe. An advanced poll will be held on Sept. 19. There will be polling stations in Behchokǫ̀, Whatı̀, Wekweètı̀, Gamètı̀, and Yellowknife, the statement said. "The Grand Chief Election is a pivotal event in the governance of the Tłı̨chǫ Nation, marking a renewal of leadership and community direction," it said. "The election process is deeply rooted in the Tłı̨chǫ Constitution and traditions, unfolding through a series of structured events designed to ensure transparency, accessibility and community engagement." The Tłı̨chǫ just celebrated their 20th anniversary of establishing self-government at the annual gathering in Behchokǫ̀ this week. The grand chief is part of the Tłıchǫ chief's executive council, which also consists of a chief from each of the four Tłıchǫ community governments (Behchokǫ̀, Whatì, Gamètì and Wekweètì). There are also Tłıchǫ citizens in Yellowknife. The chief's executive council oversees the implementation of Tłı̨chǫ laws. The Tłı̨chǫ government was created following the 2005 land claim and self-government agreement with the Northwest Territories and Canada. The four communities combined have a population of just over 3,000 people, according to the N.W.T. Bureau of Statistics population estimate for 2024.

Air Canada resuming flights after Ottawa forces binding arbitration with flight attendants

Article content Air Canada says it plans to resume flights today after the federal government stepped in and ordered binding arbitration to end a flight attendants' strike Saturday. Article content The Montreal-based airline says the first flights will resume this evening, but that it will take several days before its operations return to normal. Article content Air Canada says it has been directed by the Canada Industrial Relations Board to resume operations and have flight attendants continue their duties by 2 p.m. ET. Article content Article content Air Canada said on Sunday that the CIRB has ordered the terms of the collective agreement between the union and the airline that expired on March 31 be extended until a new agreement is reached. Article content The Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents the flight attendants, has accused federal Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu of caving to Air Canada's demands. Article content Article content Air Canada had previously asked Hajdu to order the parties to enter a binding arbitration process. But intervention was something she resisted until Saturday, when she said it became clear the two sides were at an impasse. Article content CUPE maintained it opposed arbitration, instead preferring to solve the impasse through bargaining. Article content The union accused Air Canada of refusing to bargain in good faith due to the likelihood of the government stepping in and imposing arbitration. Article content Article content The union has said its main sticking points revolve around wages that have been outpaced by inflation during its previous 10-year contract, along with unpaid labour when planes aren't in the air. Article content Article content CUPE announced it is calling a national day of action and will have demonstrators outside of the Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary airports this morning. Article content The Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents more than 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants, announced its members were heading to the picket lines after being unable to reach an eleventh-hour deal with the airline, while Air Canada locked out its agents about 30 minutes later due to the strike action. Article content More than 700 Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flights were cancelled amid the work stoppage, the airline said. Article content Flights by Air Canada Express, operated by third-party airlines Jazz and PAL, were not affected. Article content
