Missed opportunity in major transformation of Nottingham roundabout

Yahoo04-05-2025
A Nottingham bus operator says the city council has missed a key opportunity in its major transformation of Maid Marian Way. Trentbarton says it has seen "significant drops" in customers due to the works on the key Nottingham route and that the council "could have gone further" with some of their upgrades.
Work began in spring 2024 to turn the now-demolished large roundabout on Maid Marian Way, which connected the key city centre routes of Derby Road and Lower Parliament Street in Nottingham city centre, into a T-junction. The work caused chaos at points due to severe delays, with the city council being forced to apologise in October 2024.
The last phase of the work is currently under way, but Trentbarton's managing director says the changes could have been more radical. Tom Morgan said: "We have to accept that in order for things to get better, there has to be disruption at certain times.

"We're really hopeful that when all the works are done, that trunk road into Nottingham does work more efficiently. We'd definitely like to have seen them take the opportunity to improve bus priority measures through those junctions, which I think they could have gone further with.
"We'd have liked to see more priority through the Upper Parliament Street/Maid Marian Way junction going out of the city and down at the bottom of Tollhouse Hill coming into the city. I also accept that green spaces are good and we don't want our cities to be covered in tarmac, so it's just getting the balance right."
Nottingham City Council was approached for comment but did not want to give a statement on whether they could have done more upgrades to prioritise buses. Speaking about the disruption during the work so far, Mr Morgan said: "Whilst the works have been going on, it's been so tough for our customers, our drivers, and our operational teams trying to keep things going and and then also communicating out to customers.
"We've seen quite significant drops in usage during the course of the works on our Nottingham-based services. At times of disruption, inevitably people get back in their car because they have the flexibility to avoid certain pinch points like Maid Marian Way.
"We always try and say to the authorities when there are big highway schemes they should be prioritising public transport through those roadworks to encourage people to move on to what is the most efficient form of transport. That's quite tough because there is a strong car lobby."
All the work to Maid Marian Way so far has been focused on its northern end and funded by £9 million from a government fund. The coming years will then see its southern end transformed thanks to the wider development of the Broad Marsh.
Nottingham City Council recently confirmed it will spend half a million pounds on a study looking into whether Maid Marian Way could be straightened out at the southern end to the junction with Canal Street. The remains of the historic Greyfriar Gate could end up disappearing and the pedestrianised Collin Street could then be extended right up to Maid Marian Way.
The possibilities have been opened up by confirmation that NCP's Maid Marian Way Car Park will be demolished as part of the Broad Marsh development. Maid Marian Way was initially built as a single-carriageway route and efforts to widen it into a dual carriageway began in the 1960s.
The remaining work on the northern end will now see improvements to the public realm, including wide Portuguese-slabbed pavements with benches and dozens of trees and shrubbery. Nottingham City Transport confirmed the latest improvements began on April 22 and that one lane on Upper Parliament Street will be closed for five weeks during the work.

Penske-Fox Deal May Address Succession Issues At Indianapolis 500

Fox Corp. said Thursday it is acquiring one-third of Penske Entertainment, including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the IndyCar series. The announcement deepens the business ties between Roger Penske, 88, and Rupert Murdoch, 94, the overseer of the Fox empire. The transaction may address looming succession issues at one of the most storied racing revenues in the United States. Fox Sports this year began televising Penske's IndyCar series, including the Indianapolis 500. Terms of the new deal were not disclosed. Penske Entertainment said the deal included 'a multiyear extension' of Fox Sports' media rights with IndyCar. 'This partnership is built on long-standing trust and a shared vision for the future,' Roger Penske said in a statement. Fox 'sees the incredible potential across our sport and wants to play an active role in building our growth trajectory,' he said. The deal comes at a critical time for the Indianapolis speedway and the IndyCar series. Roger Penske agreed in 2019 to acquire the speedway and the IndyCar series from the Hulman-George family, which bought the speedway in 1945. That transaction became final in early 2020. IndyCar and Championship Auto Racing Teams battled for supremacy of U.S. open-wheel racing in the 1990s and 2000s. Eventually, the Hulman-George family won the fight. During that era, the European-based Formula One series raced at the Indianapolis speedway, beginning in 2000. After several years, F1 moved on from Indy but later came back to the U.S. in a bigger way. F1 now has three U.S. races. IndyCar, meanwhile, has struggled to demonstrate it's more than the Indianapolis 500, held annually during Memorial Day weekend. In its first year on Fox, the 500 averaged 7.01 million viewers in 2025, its best showing since 2008. That was better than the almost 6.8 million viewers for the Daytona 500 in February, NASCAR's biggest race, also televised by Fox. But things weren't all joy in Penske land. Two cars owned by Penske, were forced to start from the back of this year's Indy 500 because of a cheating scandal. Penske has used racing to promote his transportation businesses. He's won a lot a lot at the Indianapolis 500 races as a team owner (20, actually). He has also been a winner in NASCAR. Still, given Penske's age, there the question of succession at Indy, both the speedway and the race series. The speedway is close to downtown Indianapolis and comprises valuable real estate. The question is whether the new deal with Fox begins to answer those succession questions. 'We're thrilled to join the IndyCar ownership group at such a pivotal time for the sport,' Eric Shanks, CEO and executive producer of Fox Sports, said in the statement. 'IndyCar represents everything we value in live sports — passionate fans, iconic venues, elite competition and year-round storytelling potential.'

More than 56,000 Ford trucks recalled over seatbelt issue

More than 56,000 Ford vehicles are being recalled due to an issue involving seatbelts, federal safety regulators reported this week. In a Wednesday, July 30, letter to the Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the vehicle's audible warning chime may not activate when a driver or passenger's seat belt is unbuckled and the vehicle is started. The vehicle's failure to ping passengers when their seatbelt is not fastened can increase a person's risk of injury or death if a crash takes place, according to the NHTSA. Ford reported it is not aware of any accidents or injuries connected to the faulty seat belt systems. Here's what you need to know about the vehicle recall published by the NHTSA: Is your car on the list? Ford has issued over 30 recalls since late May. Ford is recalling certain 2025 F-150 hybrid vehicles. There are potentially 56,473 vehicles impacted. The affected vehicles are equipped with the 3.5L Hybrid Electric powertrain, according to the report. Drivers can check the NHTSA website to see if their vehicle has been affected by the recall. Ford's number for this recall is 25C31. For more information, contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Dealers will update the audio control module software, free of charge, the NHTSA recall notice reads. Notification letters were expected to be mailed to owners by Aug. 25.
