Tacloban airport passenger nabbed for violating gun ban
A Manila-bound passenger was arrested in Tacloban City Airport for allegedly carrying a replica of a submachine gun in his luggage amid the ongoing election gun ban.
According to the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP-AVSEG) on Saturday, the passenger was prohibited from boarding his flight and was nabbed after a routine screening at the airport found in his baggage a replica of a Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun, complete with a magazine.
The PNP-AVSEG noted that this was a violation of Republic Act No. 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, in relation to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Resolution No. 11067.
The nationwide gun ban took effect on January 12, coinciding with the start of the election period, and will continue until June 11, 2025.
During this period, the PNP-AVSEG emphasized that the transport of firearms and deadly weapons, including replicas and toy guns, is strictly prohibited.
Toy guns and replicas are included in the list of prohibited items by the Department of Transportation's Office for Transportation Security.
Possession of such items may still also result in being offloaded or arrested even outside the Comelec gun ban period, it added.
'The implementation of these measures is part of our duty to ensure the safety and security of every passenger and flight nationwide. We urge the public to always check their baggage for prohibited items before traveling to avoid inconvenience,' PNP-AVSEG director Police Brigadier General Christopher Abecia said in a statement. —Giselle Ombay/RF, GMA Integrated News

PNP to deploy 37,000 cops for School Year 2025-2026 opening
Some 37,000 police officers will be deployed by the Philippine National Police for the opening of School Year 2025-2026 this month, PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo said Saturday. Duterte Youth nominee's use of different surname for 'name recall' —Cardema
The Duterte Youth party-list on Friday explained that the alleged use of its first nominee of a different surname is for 'name recall." In a statement, Duterte Youth chairperson Ronald Cardema came to the defense of Drixie Mae Cardema amid allegations on social media that she used a different family name on her Certificate of Acceptance of Nomination (CONA) for Eleksyon 2025. Reports on social media alleged that the full name of the Duterte Youth nominee was Drixie Mae Suarez and not Cardema. 'First of all, Duterte Youth Party-List Cong. Drixie Mae Suarez-Cardema is the sister of former Duterte Youth Party-List Cong. Ducielle Marie Suarez-Cardema,' said Ronald, the partylist chairperson and husband of Ducielle. 'In the start of every Congress, congressmen and senators, formally request the House and the Senate for the political names that they prefer to use for the entire Congress because name recall is key to Philippine politics,' he added. On Thursday, Commission on Elections (Comelec) chief George Erwin Garcia said the poll body's Law Department is set to issue a motu prioprio show cause order against the Duterte Youth first nominee for allegedly using a different surname on her CONA. Garcia, however, clarified the case will not affect Drixie's nomination and possible proclamation, saying there were no formal petitions filed for the cancellation of her nomination. 'Para sa amin, yan ay fact-finding muna. Hindi pa naman namin sinasabing may disqualification case o pormal na kaso, election offense, o kung ano pa man,' Garcia told reporters in a virtual interview on Friday. (For us, this is just fact-finding proceedings. We are not saying there is a disqualification or election offense case.) 'Ayaw namin pangunahan muna, ayaw namin ipre-empt ang Law Department. Kung yun ang kanilang depensa, so be it. At least kahit paano meron silang depensa nila sa paggamit ng isang family name na maaaring di yun nag family name ng naturang partylist nominee,' he added. (We don't want to preempt the Law Department. If that is the explanation of the Cardemas, then so be it.) The Comelec will likewise look into the official documents that Drixie submitted when she filed her candidacy for Eleksyon 2025 as well as her previous records, according to Garcia. Abolish SHS? Angara says up to Congress to decide
Education Secretary Sonny Angara acknowledged Friday the lapses in the implementation of the senior high school (SHS) curriculum under the K to 12 program, but said that it is up to Congress to determine whether or not it should continue. This, as Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada filed a measure seeking to rationalize the basic education system in the country by removing the SHS, citing reason that it 'still has not fully achieved its goal' to produce skilled and job-ready graduates 12 years after the enactment of Republic Act No. 10533, also known as the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013. Angara, who served as senator before being appointed as chief of the Department of Education (DepEd), pointed out that the agency is set to implement changes in the SHS this incoming School Year 2025-2026, through the pilot run of the revised SHS curriculum. 'Hindi maganda ang naging implementation nitong nakaraang dekada. Masyadong marami ang subjects at nakahon masyado ang mga bata. Hindi sila nakakapili ng subject/s,' Angara said in a statement. (The SHS' implementation in the last decade has not been good. There were too many subjects and the learners were constrained. They were not able to choose subject/s.) 'Having said that, ang desisyon kung ipagpapatuloy ang SHS o hindi ay Kongreso lamang po ang makakapagsabi at makakapag-pasya,' he added. (Having said that, the decision whether or not to continue SHS is up to the Congress to say and decide on.) The incoming academic year will run from June 16, 2025, and end on March 31, 2026, marking a return to the pre-pandemic school calendar. There are 841 schools set to participate in the pilot run of the revised SHS curriculum, which underwent extensive review and consultation from education stakeholders, in School Year 2025-2026. Based on the initial results of the pilot, the Education Department will announce if all senior high schools will subsequently be required to implement the new curriculum by SY 2026-2027. 'Shorten college education' For Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, chairman of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, the proposal to streamline general education subjects must also fulfill the promise made with the K-12 program—that additional years in high school would shorten college education. 'While policy decisions rest with the DepEd and CHED, college curricula must avoid duplication so students can focus on their specialization and graduate in less than four years,' Gatchalian said. 'They should not bear the burden of extra semesters simply because the original intent of the K-12 reform—made 12 years ago—has yet to be fully realized,' he continued. Under Senate Bill No. 3001, Estrada seeks to retain the fundamental principles of RA 10533, sans the SHS level, in a bid 'to simplify the high school system while still making sure students get quality education that meets global standards.'
