Delhi Police arrest 8 in crackdown on Gurjant ‘Janta' Gang
Sanjay Kumar Sain, additional commissioner of police (crime) said the arrests followed a firing on April 8 at a businessman's home in Anand Vihar after he received a ₹5 crore extortion demand via WhatsApp and international calls.
The breakthrough came on May 2, when police intercepted a cab in Alipur, north Delhi, and arrested Sumit Ghangas from Panipat with 45 live rounds. He and his brother Rahul Ghangas — out on bail in an attempted murder case — were allegedly coordinating with Gurjant.
Subsequent raids led to the arrest of six more men from Panipat, Karnal, and Ambala. The police recovered three semi-automatic pistols, two country-made weapons, 69 live cartridges, and multiple phones used for coordination.
The gang comprised mostly semi-urban youth from Haryana, many in their early 20s with prior records or jail time. Rahul Ghangas allegedly orchestrated the April 8 firing. Others, including Saurav, Rahul Kashyap, Ashish Kumar, Rohit Kumar, Preetpal Singh, and Deepak Kumar, were involved in arms transfers, logistics, and motorcycle theft.
Deputy commissioner of police Aditya Gautam said the case highlights the growing challenge of jailed or fugitive gangsters orchestrating crime remotely. 'Organised crime today is decentralised and tech-enabled. This operation has crippled a key limb of the Gurjant Singh gang,' he said.

Delhi Police nab ‘ascetic' who killed his estranged wife after she refused to accompany him to Bihar
The Delhi Police Saturday arrested a man who allegedly hacked his estranged wife to death at their son's house in South Delhi and stayed in hiding in an ashram. The police said the accused, Pramod Jha, 60, told them that he had an argument with his wife Kiran Jha over her 'extra-marital' affairs hours before he killed her in her sleep on August 7. Kiran had left her husband 10 years ago and was staying with their son Durgesh Jha and his family in Delhi's Neb Sarai area, according to the police. Since his wife left him, Pramod had been living as an ascetic in his village of Jamalpur in Bihar, and he sustained through small donations he received, said the police. The police said Pramod told them that he left Bihar 25 years ago and worked as a guard in Delhi. He then got into religious preaching and became a self-styled saint in the capital, said the police. Pramod lived with his family in Neb Sarai but left for Bihar in 2016 after he started suspecting his wife of extra-marital affairs, said the police. He then started living with his ailing mother in Bihar, and she passed away in May this year, they added. 'On June 31, he travelled on the same train from Munger in Bihar to Delhi as his wife, who was there to attend her mother's funeral. He arrived in Delhi on August 1, and his daughter took him to her grandmother's house in the Devli village. A heated argument erupted between the accused and his wife over alleged extra-marital affairs,' said Ankit Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), South. In a fit of rage, Pramod allegedly brutally murdered his wife with a hammer while she was asleep. The police said he had brought the hammer from his village, planning the murder in advance if his wife did not follow him back. According to the police, after the murder, Pramod re-dressed as a saint and fled the scene. The police circulated lookout posters across the capital in a bid to nab the accused. 'From the analysis of CCTV footage, the police found out that the accused fled around midnight on August 6, dressed in the attire of a saint. The team followed his movement via multiple CCTV cameras, tracing his route. He used auto-rickshaws, took lifts on two-wheelers, and travelled some distance on foot across Badarpur, Jaitpur, Moladband, Meethapur, and Harinagar areas,' DCP Chauhan said. The breakthrough came after a five-day search when the head priest at a Pitampura-based ashram saw the poster with Pramod's picture and recognised him. 'The head of an ashram at Pitampura revealed that a man matching the description of Pramod, who was referred by a disciple from Bihar, was staying at their Qutubgarh branch. Immediately, a team led by Inspector Pawan conducted a raid and arrested Pramod Jha,' DCP Chauhan said.

Hyderabad man loses Rs 2.3 crore in investment fraud
HYDERABAD: A Hyderabad-based private employee lost Rs 2.36 crore in an investment fraud perpetrated by a trading platform. In his complaint to Rachakonda cybercrime police in July this year, the victim mentioned that he had been looking for AI-based trading platforms and was duped after being added to a WhatsApp group. The 52-year-old was added to Shoonya group, run by one Sarvjeet Singh Virk and his team member, Swetha. The group reportedly provided stock recommendations, trade ideas, stock tips, and training. Based on the recommendations, the victim downloaded an app and started investing in it. Initially, he invested small amounts, which were reflected on the app. Enticed by the profits, the victim began investing huge sums in IPOs and other stocks. However, when he attempted to withdraw the money, the platform asked him to pay an additional amount, citing various reasons. He later realised that he had been cheated: 'I invested an amount of Rs 2,36,40,000 in transactions and received zero returns. I lost the total amount,' he told the police. Cyber crooks dupe man of Rs 41,000 Jagtial: Cybercriminals duped a resident of Jagtial of Rs 41,000 after luring him with an increased credit limit on his Ratnakar Bank Limited credit card. Posing as bank officials, the crooks shared a link with the victim. Upon clicking the link, the victim lost the amount. Thane man loses ₹41 lakh in online trading fraud; 2 booked
Two persons allegedly cheated a 48-year-old man from Maharashtra's Thane city of ₹40.99 lakh in a fake online trading scheme, police said on Monday. After the victim's efforts to recover the money failed, he approached the police. As per the victim's complaint, he came across a trading advertisement on Facebook and while pursuing it, he was added to a WhatsApp group where he was guided by fraudsters to invest in IPOs. He transferred ₹40,99,814 to some bank accounts in May and June this year. His accounts later reflected his investment had risen to ₹88,39,072, but he was unable to withdraw the amount. When the fraudsters asked him to pay 20 per cent of the amount as tax, the man realised he was cheated, an official from Vartak Nagar police station said. After the victim's efforts to recover the money failed, he approached the police. Based on his complaint, the police on Sunday registered an FIR against two persons, including a woman, under sections 318(4) (cheating) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita as well as provisions of the Information Technology Act, the official said.
