Delhi Police arrest 8 in crackdown on Gurjant ‘Janta' Gang

The inter-state cell of Delhi Police's crime branch has busted a major operational wing of the Gurjant Singh alias 'Janta' gang, arresting eight men — including shooters, arms suppliers, and facilitators — across Delhi and Haryana in connection with an extortion and firing case in Anand Vihar in early April. Sanjay Kumar Sain, additional commissioner of police (crime) said the arrests followed a firing on April 8 at a businessman's home in Anand Vihar after he received a ₹5 crore extortion demand via WhatsApp and international calls. The breakthrough came on May 2, when police intercepted a cab in Alipur, north Delhi, and arrested Sumit Ghangas from Panipat with 45 live rounds. He and his brother Rahul Ghangas — out on bail in an attempted murder case — were allegedly coordinating with Gurjant. Subsequent raids led to the arrest of six more men from Panipat, Karnal, and Ambala. The police recovered three semi-automatic pistols, two country-made weapons, 69 live cartridges, and multiple phones used for coordination. The gang comprised mostly semi-urban youth from Haryana, many in their early 20s with prior records or jail time. Rahul Ghangas allegedly orchestrated the April 8 firing. Others, including Saurav, Rahul Kashyap, Ashish Kumar, Rohit Kumar, Preetpal Singh, and Deepak Kumar, were involved in arms transfers, logistics, and motorcycle theft. Deputy commissioner of police Aditya Gautam said the case highlights the growing challenge of jailed or fugitive gangsters orchestrating crime remotely. 'Organised crime today is decentralised and tech-enabled. This operation has crippled a key limb of the Gurjant Singh gang,' he said.

Indo-Pak conflict exposes healthcare gaps in border areas

Jaipur: The Indo-Pak conflict exposed the fragile healthcare facilities in districts close to the international border. However, the conflict was a blessing in disguise for the residents of Jaisalmer, as the health department filled the vacant posts of doctors and paramedical staff in the district within just a week. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Keeping in mind the emergency situation due to the conflict, and considering it was one of the most vulnerable districts, the state govt took immediate measures to ensure proper healthcare facilities. Taking it seriously, the health department filled the vacant posts in Jaisalmer district, which was highly sensitive during the conflict. The state govt made postings of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and community health officers in significant numbers over the past few days amid the Indo-Pak conflict. "Under the emergency plan, the health department appointed 35 doctors for Jaisalmer, including 26 who were awaiting posting orders for some time, while nine doctors are senior resident doctors," said Dr Rajendra Paliwal, chief medical health officer (Jaisalmer). Despite the posting of 35 doctors, the posts of doctors are still vacant in the district, especially specialist doctors in community health centres (CHC). Dr Paliwal expressed hope that Jaisalmer would soon get more specialist doctors for the vacant posts. In the district, 31 posts of pharmacists were vacant, which have now been filled. On Wednesday, the health department gave postings to 31 pharmacists in Jaisalmer. The state govt also filled the vacant posts of community health officers (CHOs). There were 161 CHO posts vacant, and all have been filled in the last week. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The district has 32 primary health centres, 10 community health centres, two district hospitals, and 10 Janta clinics. Dr Paliwal said, "Though the district had a shortage of doctors, there is not a single hospital, CHC, or PHC without the posting of a doctor." He added, "The health minister is focusing on the district, keeping in mind its difficult geographical location." In the last week, Jaisalmer received 27-28 nurses, but still, 20-25 nurse posts remain vacant. Since the district is situated deep within the Thar Desert, with the population residing at long distances, it is one of the most challenging districts for ensuring healthcare facilities. Jaisalmer has never been an attractive place for doctors or other healthcare staff for posting due to its difficult working conditions.

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath launches key welfare projects in Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh) [India], May 12 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched two key public welfare projects for Gorakhpur. He inaugurated the new Urban Facilitation Centre (Nagariya Seva Kendra) and a Senior Citizen Day Care Centre. These initiatives are important steps in making Gorakhpur a smart city. 'I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Nagariya Seva Kendra. The Uttar Pradesh government has also launched the Senior Citizen Day Care Centre, a dedicated space where elderly individuals can spend their day. The centre offers a canteen, morning yoga, newspapers, and spiritual texts from the library, ensuring all-around care and well-being,' stated CM Yogi during his address. He further added that,'Our Gorakhpur is on the path of development. True progress is only meaningful when it directly benefits the people.' Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held a Janta Darshan at the Gorakhnath temple in Gorakhpur on Monday. The Chief Minister heard the grievances and demands of the people who had gathered to meet him. On Sunday, the Chief Minister lauded the establishment of the BrahMos Missile Integration Unit in Lucknow, calling it a landmark step for India's defense capability, adding that weapons made in Lucknow 'will shake the enemy'. The facility, set up under the Defence Industrial Corridor initiative, will manufacture BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, boosting India's defense capabilities and reducing dependence on imports. Addressing a public gathering in Gorakhpur, CM Yogi said,'... The biggest terror state is Pakistan. Brahmos is a missile that targeted a Pakistani aircraft recently and it will now be manufactured in Lucknow... Weapons will be made that will shake the enemy...' Adityanath's comments came amid Operation Sindoor, India's military operation targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The BrahMos facility aligns with the Make-in-India initiative, promoting self-reliance in defense production and positioning Lucknow as a defense manufacturing hub. He also urged citizens to remain alert against 'anti-national' elements and boycott anyone who speaks against India's interests.'We are secure when our country is secure, and that happens when we all keep the nation first... Public should be aware of anyone who makes any statement that is anti-national and boycott them,' he added. Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya echoed the sentiment, emphasising the significance of the BrahMos unit as part of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Corridor. 'Under the defence corridor, the historic unit for integration of the BrahMos missile is an important step towards making India a superpower. This is a huge achievement for PM Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, UP CM Yogi Adityanath and the double-engine Government, and the more it is appreciated, the less it is. I express gratitude to all scientists and engineers of DRDO,' he said, extending his gratitude to the scientists and engineers of DRDO. (ANI)
