Abdul Karim proposes annual MySED sports carnival to promote unity
KUCHING (June 29): Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MySED) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has proposed that the MySED Sports Carnival be made an annual event, following the success of its inaugural edition.
Speaking during the closing ceremony of the carnival at Sarawak Sports Village today, he said the event has proven its potential and should be expanded to other major cities in Sarawak such as Sibu and Miri in future editions.
'This inaugural MySED Sports Carnival should not remain a one-off event but must be held annually and hosted in various major cities across Sarawak to further promote unity, fitness, and healthy competition among state agencies. It should only be the beginning.
'An event like this should not just be limited to Kuching every year. By rotating the host city, we allow more participation from other regions and foster closer ties between different zones and agencies under MySED,' he added when speaking during the closing ceremony of the carnival at Sarawak Sports Village today.
Abdul Karim said organising the carnival annually would help instill a consistent culture of sports and wellness among civil servants while providing opportunities to engage the public through friendly competition and recreational activities.
He also extended his appreciation to the organising committee led by MySED Permanent Secretary Morshidi Frederick, as well as the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) and the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS), for successfully delivering the event.
'I believe this is something we can consider funding through existing event grants, such as those under the Ministry of Tourism, to help support and sustain it in the coming years.
'This carnival is also not only about winning or losing. It's about togetherness, maintaining good health, and creating positive energy among our agencies,' he said.
He concluded by saying that sports serve as a subtle yet effective means of reminding civil servants of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, especially when they are no longer involved in competitive athletics.
'To those who won, congratulations. But to those who didn't, your presence and participation made this carnival a success,' he said.
The MySED Sports Carnival 2025 took place from June 27 to 29 at the Sarawak Sports Village and featured four zonal teams: Kras Panthers (Southern Zone), KMSS Midforce (Central Zone), Northern Crocs (Northern Zone), and Hornbill X-Troopers (combined SSC and MSNS).
The event was jointly organised by MySED, SSC, and MSNS.

In the Girl's Singles, Lavinia Kho Jia Jie once again proved unstoppable, storming to her seventh consecutive roll-off title this year. Finishing second and third were Adriana Ramiza Ramulo (2,366) and Claudia Kumang Jakson (2,312). The Boy's Singles title was lifted by Abang Aqasha Abang Esmiera who sealed a hat-trick of titles in 2025 with yet another standout display to amass 2,499 pinfalls ahead of Gerald Ethan Tony (2,408) and Neilvis Ferdinand Ngali (2,366). Aqasha's triumph was underlined by a blistering 280-pin high game. Silambam officially back in Selangor Sukma after review
KUALA LUMPUR: Traditional martial art silambam has been included in next year's Selangor Malaysia Games (Sukma), joining petanque and muaythai as optional sports following a review by the supreme committee. The decision came after a special meeting on Thursday attended by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria. The proposal was put forward by Selangor State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship executive councillor Najwan Halimi, who also chairs the organising committee. The Selangor Sukma will now feature 30 compulsory and seven optional sports, with the committee confirming that no further proposals or appeals will be considered. Silambam's initial omission had drawn concern from several quarters of the community before the review led to its inclusion. Hannah said her ministry is also exploring "Non-Sukma Games" for sports not on the programme. "Additionally, a new model for organising Sukma after the 2028 Kelantan edition is being studied to ensure the continuous development of sports and athletes without placing a heavy financial burden on the government," she said. The Selangor Sukma will take place across nine districts from August 15-24, 2026.

Muaythai, petanque and silambam debut in SUKMA 2026
KUALA LUMPUR: Three optional sports—muaythai, petanque, and silambam—will make their debut in the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor. The decision was finalised during a special meeting of the SUKMA Supreme Committee. The National Sports Council (NSC) confirmed the addition in a statement today. The meeting was attended by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and Sarawak's Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. Also present were Olympic Council of Malaysia president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria and state sports officials. Selangor State Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneurship Exco Mohd Najwan Halimi proposed the inclusion of the three sports. The SUKMA Supreme Committee unanimously approved the proposal. With the addition, SUKMA 2026 will feature 30 compulsory and seven optional sports. No further proposals for additional sports will be considered. SUKMA 2026 is scheduled from 15 to 24 August across nine Selangor districts. Hannah Yeoh revealed that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is exploring a 'Non-SUKMA Games' initiative. This event would cater to sports not selected for SUKMA. The new model is expected to launch after SUKMA Kelantan 2028.
