It was heart in mouth viewing, but a lion-hearted Sir Kingsford staved off Victorian raider Basilinna to win Saturday's Port Adelaide Cup at Morphettville.
Piloting the field in his first attempt at 2500m, Sir Kingsford refused to lay down in a toe-to-toe battle with Basilinna, after the mare threw down the gauntlet at the top of the straight.

Emotions spilt over for Gawler handler Nicole Searle, who trains in partnership with husband Gary, and daughter, Brianna Callanan.
'What a great feeling. To our team at home, well done,' Searle said post-race.
'You've all worked hard. Gary and Brianna, and to the owners of this horse, it's been a long journey.
'We trained his mum, we lost her, unfortunately, last year. We were really looking forward to the filly that she was carrying but this is a tough horse.
'He's just a really nice horse and probably has taken over the mantle from Lady Silhouette as the best horse we've had.'
Sir Kingsford won by a length, guided by a brilliant frontrunning ride from Teagan Voorham, it secured a second Port Adelaide Cup win for Voorham, who saluted aboard Hasta La War in 2023.
Voorham admitted that she thought Basilinna, ridden by Lachlan Neindorf, would overhaul them, but Sir Kingsford kept on fighting.
'I personally was worried. I thought when Lachie got to me, he's going to go straight past me,' Voorham said.
'But this horse, he's unreal. He hears another horse and he just digs harder and harder every time.
'Every time I thought Lachie was going past me, Sir Kingsford, 'Billy' as we call him – he just said absolutely not.'

Gun filly On Display, trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr, charged home for an electric win in the Adelaide Guineas (1600m).
Ridden by Ben Melham, the filly peeled to the outside at the 400m, letting go with a blistering turn of foot to defy local hope Stirrup Cup. The result helped connections put a luckless last start run with the filly behind them.
'It's a nice consolation, we've always liked this filly,' Kent Jr said.
'Expensive purchase, gorgeous type, (she's) always had a big sprint on her.'
Felicity Atkinson steered Voltage Point to an impressive first up win for trainer Chris Bieg, the apprentice hoop is riding in career-best form.
The result kicked off an early double for Bieg, who later found success with Annihilate in the Autumn Series Final (1600m).
Trainer Stephen Theodore trusted his horse Fine Future to get the money on Saturday, and that confidence was well founded, the Japanese gelding stormed away to win under Jamie Melham in the David Thomas Memorial Provincial Pathways Final.
It was an emotional victory for Theodore, who spoke of his friendship with the late Thomas, who was a well-respected and loved figure in South Australian racing.

Inside the studio a digital IP-based television facility, full HD LED based news set and large-scale sports control room make it one of the most technologically advanced broadcasting centres in the country. Mr Howard said it represented 'a significant investment in both our people and our technology, ensuring we continue to deliver the very best content to our viewers now and into the future'. Seven Melbourne's managing director and Victorian sales director Peter Charles said the headquarters wasn't just a workplace, it was a 'hub of innovation and collaboration that is already seeing our teams work together in exciting new ways'.

Portsea Polo set to return to Point Nepean in 2026 as part of global

Don't miss out on the headlines from South East . Followed categories will be added to My News. The Portsea Polo is making a comeback with a new format and high end vibe that could see superyachts moored alongside the arena. After a five year hiatus the event is returning to Point Nepean on February 14, 2026 as part of F3Polo which debuts in Sydney's Centennial Park in November. F3Polo is a contemporary twist on the traditional sport made famous by the royals and is designed to make the game faster and bring spectators closer to the action. Each team has three players instead of four, the rules are simplified and the chukkas (or quarters) are shorter. Early bird tickets to the event went on sale on Tuesday much to the surprise of Portsea resident and long time polo fan Rod North. 'It's the best kept secret in Portsea at the moment,' he said. 'No one seems to know it's back on and if they do they are being very hush hush about it. 'In any case it's exciting for Portsea and very good news for local businesses.' Mr North, who has been attending polo matches since the 1980s, said the 2026 event appeared to cater for a 'well-heeled crowd'. 'The organisers are offering moorings for spectators wanting to travel to the event by boat,' he said. 'I wouldn't be surprised if we had some superyachts turn up.' Those without a boat but holding VIP or private marquee tickets could also buy a car park for the day near the event at Jarman Oval for $100. Sorrento Chamber of Commerce president Krysten Le Marshall said the 'game of princes' would put the peninsula 'on the map' globally. 'The F3Polo has a global route including Singapore and New York and for Portsea to be included is such a coup,' Ms Le Marshall said. 'It's an elevated version of the old Portsea Polo and there will be plenty of flow on benefits for Sorrento with spectators coming here for after parties and to overnight.' Mr North said the event had changed a lot since his early days at Portsea Polo when he took the car and had a picnic from the boot. 'Now, unless you want to stand all day or sprint for the first come first served lawn furniture in the VIP area, you'll have buy a table for ten on the VIP Terrace for almost $3500 or pay $730.75 for a solo ticket to a private marquee,' he said.

Signs point to Reid remaining at Eagles in 2026

West Coast's highly sought young star Harley Reid is leaning towards remaining at the Eagles in 2026 rather than seeking a trade back home to Victoria. Reid, who has been subject to constant speculation – and interest from Victorian clubs since his outstanding debut season in 2024 – is said to be more likely to remain in Perth and play for West Coast next year, according to rival clubs and industry sources who spoke to this masthead on Wednesday. Reid is contracted for 2026, under the AFL's three-year mandatory minimum for first round picks, which means West Coast has a hold on him in any case. Of course, the prospect of Reid moving home to Victoria when his contract expires at the end of 2026 remains a live possibility. While he is more inclined to stay than leave, this is not a definitive position and it cannot be completely ruled out that he might seek a trade. The likelihood that Reid, the 2023 No.1 draft pick, will stay in Perth creates a series of dominoes for rival clubs, given that relatively few were well-placed to satisfy West Coast in a trade this year. Richmond and Essendon would arguably be the Victorian clubs with the best draft capital if Reid was willing to play for those clubs, and both are in the throes of rebuilding or replenishing their lists with youth rather than contending for the premiership. Of the Victorian clubs in contention mode, Geelong and Collingwood do not have first round choices this year in the national draft, while Hawthorn have Carlton's first round pick. Melbourne and Carlton, thus, are without first round picks, although the Blues would gain a top-10 choice, based on current ladder position, if they lost free agent Tom de Koning to St Kilda, who have offered the ruckman a staggering deal worth close to $1.7 million a season over a long-term.
