Game of Thrones legend lands huge role in new period drama about beloved figure
Acclaimed actor Sean Bean, renowned for his performances in Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and This City Is Ours, is poised to headline a brand new period drama.
MGM+ today revealed a first glimpse of the forthcoming series Robin Hood, which will premiere later this year.
The ten-part inaugural season, offering a fresh take on the English folk hero's tale, features Bean as the intimidating Sheriff of Nottingham opposite Gladiator star Connie Nielsen as Eleanor of Aquitaine.
The preview image from the new programme provides "a glimpse at the tense rivalries and high-stakes power struggles at the heart of this reimagined take on the legendary tale".
Robin Hood, helmed by showrunner John Glenn and producer/director Jonathan English, has been characterised by MGM+ as "a smart, sweeping, romantic adventure that brings historical authenticity, psychological depth, and a heightened focus on the relationship between Rob and Marian to the beloved story."
Rising star Jack Patten will take on the titular role, whilst Hollyoaks actress Lauren McQueen will portray Marian, reports the Express.
The cast also includes Lydia Peckham (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), Steven Waddington (The Trap), Marcus Fraser (Foundation), Angus Castle-Doughty (Shadow and Bone) and social media sensation Henry Rowley.
The debut image from Robin Hood shows Nielsen adorned in an exquisite blue gown, a cape and a golden crown.
Bean's appearance, meanwhile, harks back to his stint as Ned Stark in Game of Thrones. The duo are seen hand in hand, navigating through what seems to be a castle room lit by candles, with servants poised attentively behind them.
There have been numerous memorable renditions of the Robin Hood tale over time, including Errol Flynn's iconic portrayal in 1938's The Adventures of Robin Hood.
Cinema enthusiasts will also recall Kevin Costner and Alan Rickman's performances in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
Other unforgettable films featuring the character include 1976's Robin and Marian, starring Hollywood greats Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn, and Disney's animated classic Robin Hood from 1973.
The 2025 series Robin Hood is yet to announce a release date, but it's expected to premiere later this year on MGM+ in the U.K., Italy, Germany, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Game Of Thrones star, former Lioness and TV presenter announced for Strictly
The trio were announced on Friday as the line-up for the upcoming series was completed. Nairn played Hodor in the HBO fantasy series and currently performs as a DJ, while Carney is a sports presenter and co-hosts the Long Story Short podcast with fellow former Lioness Jill Scott. King presents on ITV's Good Morning Britain and Lorraine as a Los Angeles correspondent and has also written three novels. They will join the likes of Geordie Shore star Vicky Pattison and Neighbours actor Stefan Dennis to compete on Strictly, which returns next month. Carney told BBC's Radio 2 that being confirmed for the show was 'nerve-racking' but she is 'so excited' to participate. She said: 'Obviously football, I've retired six years ago, so this is something very new to me, but (I am a) huge fan of the show so I can't wait, and now it's out, which is like a relief to get it out there and say that I'm going to be on the show. Kristian Nairn starred in Game Of Thrones (BBC/PA) 'I'm mega-excited.' The former footballer, who has played for Chelsea, Arsenal, Birmingham City and England and is currently a pundit for men and women's football, said she had kept her participation in Strictly a secret until now, adding even her family did not know. Nairn, who is also known for his role as Wee John Feeney in the HBO comedy Our Flag Means Death, told Radio 2 he is used to keeping secrets as people would question him about Game Of Thrones plotlines. He said: 'I will say, doesn't mean that I'm good at it. 'Anyway, I have kept secrets for years on end about plot points, but yeah, it doesn't mean I'm very good at it.' 'It's such an amazing show (Strictly) and I love that. 'I love dance, I love music, I love movement, and I really saw it as a chance to get back into that, because it's been a long time. It really has been a long time, as you will see. Ross King is Good Morning Britain's LA correspondent (BBC/PA) 'I do have a few moves and I do have rhythm, but it's the DJ shuffle and it's very different to what I'm going to be doing now.' King said it is a 'dream come true to be part of an iconic show'. Other contestants confirmed for the show this year include Gladiator Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, also known as Nitro, and former The Apprentice star Tom Skinner. Skinner was announced as a contestant after the 34-year-old met US Vice-President JD Vance for a barbecue and drinks, with the social media personality – who befriended Donald Trump's number two on social media platform X – describing the event as 'once in a lifetime'. Also in the Strictly line-up this year is podcast host and YouTube star George Clarke, RuPaul's Drag Race UK finalist La Voix, former England rugby player Chris Robshaw, and model and CBBC actress Ellie Goldstein, who is to become the first contestant with Down's syndrome to take part in the full series. Love Island winner Dani Dyer-Bowen, EastEnders actress Balvinder Sopal, Doctor Who star Alex Kingston, and former footballer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink will also take to the dance floor. Strictly, hosted by Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly, will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer in September, with Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke and Shirley Ballas as judges.

Luther Ford: The Crown's breakthrough star on acting opposite James Norton
In King and Conqueror he's acting alongside James Norton, who plays Harold, and former Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays William the Conqueror. The cast spent four months filming in Iceland — which, Ford says, meant he got to know the others quickly. Especially Norton. 'We would go on hikes and have saunas,' he says. 'I think it's nice when you actually get to know someone because then it demystifies everything. And then you're just with someone who's really experienced and good at what they do. He's very open and generous and very enthusiastic.'
